Swoopes looking like a dominate player again this season. i could only listen on the radio but, as soon as she entered the game and came in/out good things seemed to happen. i pray injuries don't keep Cooper sidelined this year. she always seems to spring back...but, i just get the old Clyde jitters when she goes down. looks like Tina is back better than ever as well. she had a strong game sunday. Rookies looked like...well, rookies.

I was at the game and watched Coop go down in a flurry. Tausha Mills smacked her real good and it didn't look very pretty. Cynthia was screaming on the floor. She was helped off the court by Washington's trainer and a comet, but was gimpy and wasn't getting much support. On the sideline she got a look from the trainer and then disappeared for the remainder of the game. Hopefully she's ok. No report on that yet.

Tina Thompson: Appeared to be at the same level she was in the playoffs last year. Which to me, wasn't good, but better than most WNBA players. She missed a lot of open looks from behind the arc, but made up for it when she hit a three from about 24 feet. Swoosh. The crowd in Washington "ooed" that one. Nice. Overall, played a good game and had good energy. She also had a sweet back to the basket spin move, faking right and spinning left (a- la Olajuwon)to the baseline for two.

Rizzoti also went down, but her injury didn't look as serious. If I were to guess she caught something in the hip or thigh region. They worked it out and she made a valliant attempt to come back, but on the first play, she took the inbounds pass, tried to move, and then had to call a timeout and left the court. Yikes. On the bright side she hit a wide open jumper from about 15 feet before leaving. Nothing but net. Rizz played a controlled game and didn't mess things up. That's basically the report on her.

Conquese Washington: I have come to the conculsion that Arcain has already won the point guard position. Conquese Washington had trouble with pressure, dribbled the ball of her foot, and just plain couldn't run the offense. Cooper had to handle the ball the whole first half. And when Coop went down, the team scored like 10 points in nearly 15 minutes. It was miserable. The subs couldn't do anything. Only Tiffany Johnson kept them alive in the second half as a twenty three point lead dwindled to 8. That's when Van Chance put the regulars back in. They played poorly too, but finished the game with some hoops by swoop. Swoopes struggled upon re-entry, but then went on a massive run to close it out.

Swoopes: Struggled early with her turn around jumper, but she got to the foul line enough to keep her average up. I don't think she ever really found her long range jumper, but was quick enough to get some easy looks and points. Finished the game strong and looked as dominant as ever to close it out. In the first half the offense was geared toward coop and Sheryl didn't even touch the ball. She was on the weak side offense for a long time. She seemed comfortable with that.

Cooper: Looked like the usual coop, driving
the lane, getting fouled. You know the business.

Monica Lamb: Looked really tired. She was dogging it up and down the court. She missed a couple of free throws and wasn't much of a factor. I don't think she scored. I could be wrong though. She was wearing a face mask and maybe that had something to do with it.

On Washington's side: The crowd was a good one, and even down twenty got energized by the play of #5. I don't know who she was, but I call her "big mama". She was a force at the center position and weighed in at nearly 250 lbs. She couldn't shoot real well, but makes her free throws and can play some physical ball. A real Center. The good news is the comets still dominated when they got in the paint. Big Mama couldn't keep them from scoring inside, Yet, You can easily see, this woman is going to be a lot to deal with. She comes to play. The crowd loved her.

Thanks for the update PhiSlammaJamma (I think I got more out of your update than the one in the Chronicle). ;+)

BTW ... what radio station are you listening to comets979899? I'm not in Houston, so it may be a moot point anyway, but I would LOVE to at least be able to HEAR the Comets' games.

At least pre-season game #1 is out of the way and the team can begin to work on concrete issues (like cutting down the turnovers)!

Let's get it on!

Here's the Chronicle link. You are right, it doesn't give much detail at all.

Swoopes, Comets march on http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/552601

"Rizzotti suffered a hip contusion at 5:39 of the first quarter. Five minutes into the second half, Cooper collided with Mystics rookie center Tausha Mills and bruised her right quadriceps."

Here's what "Big Mama" Tausha Mills looks like if you haven't seen her. She's huge. They call her Baby Shaq. She's 6'3 and 235.
I wish the Comets traded up to get her. She could bang with Natalie Williams and kill Lisa Leslie.

Cometsfan, the games are broadcast on KPRC 950AM here in Houston. You can listen live to their broadcast thru their website at http://kprcradio.com/live.htm

Last year WNBA.com offered a package where you could listen to all the games thru their website. I think it was 8 or 10 dollars for the season. I don't know if they are doing it again this season.

I'm not sure what our final numbers were for Turnovers, but at the half we had 10 and Washington had 20. I imagine we had quite a few by games end. At the Half the Comets were shooting 39% to Washington's 27%. I believe we got as high as 46% with the starters in the game, but then dipped. Score at the half was about 35-17. We were also shooting 95% FT at the half. Something like 15 for 16. That dipped afterward when Lamb went to the line.

Cooper came out of the lockeroom early after the half and was signing autographs. She was joking with the crowd and was asking them where her teammates were by Raising her hands up in the air. Kind of funny. They showed up like 5 minutes later.

Thanks for the radio link Outlaw! Now I won't have to "miss" the games!

Boy! Tausha Mills is one BIG GIRL! I too wish the Comets could have traded up for her (we've got a deep bench of sorts, I think a trade could have been worked out).

Oh well ... I'm hoping that Tzekova will give us some quality under the basket. I know she started the season off slowly last year, but I thought she finished nicely, gaining confidence with each game. Now that she's had a taste of the physical nature of the WNBA play, I think we'll see more and more production out of her - if she ever gets her visa problems worked out. *sigh*

anyway... let's play ball!

glad you got your link from outlaw, cometsfan. jeff hagadorn is hilarious doing play by play on kprc radio. if your intersested in listening the the compotetion you can go to espn.com and they have wnba league pass for i think about 20 bucks and you can listen to every game from every team via the internet or if you want to watch the games, if you have access to direct tv, they offer a league pass too for around 40 bucks.

on the subject of Tausa Mills. she may very well help out the mystics, but i'm not so sure she is worthy of her shaq status just yet. everything that i've read about her via internet, newspaper and a few basketball periodicials that i subscribe to, don't exactly paint that rosey of a picture of her. yea, she's 232lbs and i think 6' 3" but she needs a little work on her shot. at 6' 3" she ain't gonna dunk like shaq for the high percentage shot. which means she gotta earn it from the line which i think she can do. with Tzekova ability to nail the 3 and pull out of the middle occationally that should free up some space low for tina and coop to drive the lane ( although i wouldn't recommend taking a charge against her...YIKES!... http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/smile.gif

Some more notes on Tausha Mills from the game. She went up for a rebound at some point and pulled it down with one hand. Practically palming it and adding some flare by ripping it down. She tumbled to the floor and drew a foul (over the back). And that made the crowd go absolutely nuts. On several other occasions she dove on the floor after loose balls and wrestled with the Comets all night. She had three blocks and sent one of Coopers shots out of bounds. Although I must admit coop was off balance and was shooting the ball from about her shoulder.
