this forum is coming along a bit slow. i hope it picks up when the season starts.

OK, who should Van start at the 1-spot. Janeth is sorta like Cuttino for the Rockets. Capable of starting but great off the bench too.

I really think she should be the one. I believe you put your best players on the court as much as possible and she only averaged 23 minutes per game last year. She's one of the best players in the world and she deserves more minutes.

I think Van will start one of the true PG's instead though, either Washington or Rizzotti.

Things'll probably pick up once we have some game action to get worked up about. I, for one, haven't kept up with the Comets offseason activities so I haven't had much to contribute so far.

I thought Janeth was coming off the bench b-c she's a 2 and Coop's got that starting job as long as she's around. I've always felt Arcain would be a starter on any other team. I know she can play the 1 (and play it well) but doesn't Van only play her at that spot to take advantage of matchups?

I don't know much about Washington or Rizzotti but, on the right team, even Steve Kerr can be a starting point guard. When you've got Cooper, Swoopes and Thompson starting, it might be better to have a role player at the point and bring Janeth, a serious threat with fresh legs, off the bench to run the second team.

What's more important than starting is finishing. I do think that, with her experience and skills, she should be on the floor at the end of games.

Janeth started the first season while Swoopes was on materity leave.

Personally, I would like to see Janeth take over permanent point guard duty. IF she's worked on her handling skills that is. She's a wonderful player with some SERIOUS SKILLS. She'd be much taller than most PGs and just add another threat that opposing teams would have to honor (cutting down on the double teams, etc. that Swoopes, Coop, and Tina have to deal with).

I'd like to see someone else come off of the bench (Rizotti or Washington) and have Janeth slide down to the 2 when Coop needs a rest - which has to be forced on her anyway.

With all of that said - I think Chancellor will probably stick to his old tactics and will bring her off the bench. Van has a horribly short rotation though & I would love to see Janeth get more playing time. I think she'll emerge as a more than competent PG. I hope Van will play her there from the start.

Just my $0.02 worth.

janeth deserves the starting spot but more than likly will not get it. my humble opinion and observations are as follows: like in the inaurgurial season, she is more comfortable with the three spot that she plays ( i believe from what i've read in the chronicle ) in her native Brazil. where she is a starter as well as former MVP. its these things that make her so valuable and perfect for this team in chemistry. she has no need to feed a ego to have to be in the starting line-up,...that need is met in Brazil. this is to Van's advantage, where the team is in need of no loss of scoring punch coming off the bench ( ala Cuttino ) as well as defensive specialist. Van has groomed her as a back up point the past two years and she has showed promise at least last season ( the year before she struggled with it a little ). mainly she matches up better against some of the taller guards in the league. with the emergance of Valdemoro (whom i think of last season plays against Swoopes in practice ) i believe Arcain is the primary back up for Cooper. but does get time at the one and three spot depending on team to team match-ups. i exspect Van to use Valdemore in much the same way he use Arcain as primary back-up for Swoopes as well as a little time at the four spot occaionally.
i said all that to back up my opinion for the case of point guard. conquese was the back up point for new york, and i exspect that she will be for us as well. too much much was made about the trade to assume that she would be the starting pg. in my opinion, Rizzotti makes the most sense for the starting spot. she already knows the system, a proven scorer and with her coaching experience in the off season, may be exactly what Van needs at this position. my only concern is if he ( Van ) likes her?...( ala...Tiffiny Woosley senerio ) Van waived her three days before training camp before anyone noticed, and she was a fan favorite in the first season. jen sitting at the end of the bench all last season reminded me so much of that that i got the impression that he didn't like her. i believe that Rizzotti deserves the starting nod or trade her for some future draft picks or something.
my picks at starting point guard:
Jennifer Rizzotti
Robinson/Washington
