From what I see, it's a felony to possess more than 20 grams of Marijuana in Florida. The article state that they found 20 grams. Very convenient that he happen to have the max.
My guess is that this will not be an issue as long as it remains 20 grams.

damn! 20 grams is a felony? thats not even an ounce. texas is 4 oz., i believe. and in austin under 2 oz. just gets you a ticket - the officer can arrest, but its at their 'discretion'.
any nba player who gets busted for pot is a dumbass - you are a multi-millionaire who probably lives in a bad-ass house with all kinds of giant tv's with the latest video games and swimming pools and go-karts and indoor bowling alley and a recording studio - if you were going to get high, where else would you want to be?
get one of your friends to buy it for you and bring it to your house - smoke it in your house and not in public - how hard is that?
there is no excuse for smoking pot in your car, especially when you are a "high" profile athlete. keep it in the house and nobody but your friends will know. its possible the cop made up the part about him smelling pot just to have an excuse to search, and if thats the case they should have refused to allow a search.

considering he was suspended a few games for smoking weed I think he is more than just a guy who looks like he does
LAS VEGAS - I just spoke with a candid and remorseful Brad Miller about his recent suspension. After failing a drug test for a third time due to marijuana use, Miller will miss the first five games of this coming season and lose approximately $693,000 of his $11.3 million salary. Miller - who came into town yesterday to see the Kings summer league team in action - confirmed that the failed test took place near the end of the Kings' regular season.

When are we going to just legalize marijauna? People say it makes you lazy, out of it, etc., but Joakim Noah is a certified stoner yet he has arguably the best motor in the game and a great basketball IQ.
Some people, like Beasley, use it to self-medicate. He clearly has problems much deeper than the drug use.

marijuana is actually not a bad drug if people want to use it leisurely. it's better than other harmful drugs out there like heroine or meth.
hell, people use marijuana to treat cancer or prevent nausea/vomiting in the hospital.
and most athletes smoke it and they do just fine.
i'm not gonna judge athletes if they use marijuana. hell, most resident doctors i work with smoked marijuana one or twice or thrice in their lives. it's all good DD.

The guy got caught with something illegal... why are we acting like he did something wrong?
(Whether marijuana should be legalized doesn't help a case when it's currently illegal.)
Among other problems with this, he's got contractual obligations and a team counting on him... aaand I could think of other ways to spend my millions.

(It does however explain your infatuation with Tmac)
You can sugar coat it all you want but it kills brain cells and is basically bad overall.
Just because a lot of people use does not make it "good" or "acceptable"....it just means a lot of people are making poor choices.

nothing wrong with a leisurely smoke, here and there, ofcourse abusing anything is not good, but pot is purty harmless. Sure it can kill brain cells, so can alcohol , we only use a small fraction of our brain cells in life anyway. People can get all pretentious and self riteous and call someone who smokes weed out, with out knowing a thing about it. Stick to the rockets and go on a diet, you harm your body more by over indulging in fatty foods than in pot.
yes, udonis was dumb for getting caught, so many ways to avoid the situation.

there is plenty of successful, young, entreprenuers and businessmen that par take in smoking, no they're not your typical, sit at home and smoke weed all day teenager. Just because you and the people YOU associate with do not ever, will not ever touch pot, does not mean their are not people in other places who are "successful" that enjoy an occasional smoke to unwind after a long week, long day, long month, whatever.
do what makes you happy, if you can be successful while being overweight and living in a square more power to you.

I used to smoke only on the weekends though and will continue doing so after my DT in a few weeks, just have some self-control and you all will be fine(by the way im a college student with straight A's). Good luck to all you fellow pot smokers in here :)

Using Marijuana is stupid.
(It does however explain your infatuation with Tmac)
You can sugar coat it all you want but it kills brain cells and is basically bad overall.
Just because a lot of people use does not make it "good" or "acceptable"....it just means a lot of people are making poor choices.
DD
Saying Marijuana is stupid is opinion. and it doesn't really kill brain cells. That's a fact. and can you please explain how it's "basically bad overall?"
and personal question for you; have you actually tried Marijuana before?

Get your facts straight. I can use Google too...
Fact: None of the medical tests currently used to detect brain damage in humans have found harm from marijuana, even from long term high-dose use. An early study reported brain damage in rhesus monkeys after six months exposure to high concentrations of marijuana smoke. In a recent, more carefully conducted study, researchers found no evidence of brain abnormality in monkeys that were forced to inhale the equivalent of four to five marijuana cigarettes every day for a year. The claim that marijuana kills brain cells is based on a speculative report dating back a quarter of a century that has never been supported by any scientific study.

I don't see why Marijuana is any different than the above mentioned. Just keep it in moderation...

From what I see, it's a felony to possess more than 20 grams of Marijuana in Florida. The article state that they found 20 grams. Very convenient that he happen to have the max.
My guess is that this will not be an issue as long as it remains 20 grams.
Earlier in the night, ESPN's site said that it was under 20g, so it was a 1st degree misdemeanor. After reading your quote, I went back to the story to quote it to let you know, but found that the article's been updated to say that it was in fact OVER 20g which is "a third-degree felony which could bring maximum punishments of a $5,000 fine and a five-year prison sentence."

You sound like the exception, though I don't know your business or exactly how successful you really are.......I guess that is in the eye of the beholder.
i never said i was successful, just that i had no complaints. maybe i could make more in a corporate job (probably not in this economy), but i measure my 'success' by the fact that i have a job which allows me to work out of my house, make my own hours and take vacations when i want. i have deadlines to meet, but i am my own boss - as long as i get what i need to get done on time its all good.
I know a lot of people that never gave up smoking and now are simply the dregs of life.....I am 45 years old, and have seen many friends go down the drug highway all the way to death or ruin....
are you still talking about doobie or hard drugs b/c i dont know anyone who took the marijuana highway to death or ruin. i have friends who took the cocaine highway or the alcohol highway to death or ruin, but the marijuana highway is smooth sailing.

Smoking weed in backyard is fine. And Haslem will never get caught for that. But having 20 gram in possession is illegal in Florida. A law is a law. You don't break it because you don't like it. You can't argue a speeding ticket by claiming you didn't have an accident. That's just the way it is.

Problem is, the system of checks and balances in America lends itself to ridiculous waiting times for reforms of any kind.
Also, direct democracy is astonishingly rare, so I doubt you'd ever have a referendum on the topic-basically, people are never going to vote for decriminalization, at least directly.
If there was a referendum though, I have a sneaky idea that pot would win out-which perhaps is why there never will be one.

If you make the laws about usage or possession so minor it does the same thing as totally legalizing it.

Here is one from a doctor who tries to answer the question of whether smoking pot is bad for you (http://www.dailystrength.org/experts/dr-orrange/article/is-smoking-pot-really-bad-for-you)
Some key points in the article:
Is it true that it makes you infertile? In men, marijuana causes decreased serum testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm motility. This may lead to decreased libido (interest in sex) and impotence. An increased risk of infertility may result from changes in semen characteristics seen with marijuana smoking.
In women, chronic pot use causes shorter menstrual cycles and increased prolactin levels which may impair fertility.
Can you have withdrawal symptoms if you stop smoking pot? Yes, if you are a chronic user you may have withdrawal symptoms after abrupt cessation. Marijuana withdrawal begins within ten hours of the last dose and consists of irritability, agitation, depression, insomnia, nausea, anorexia, and tremor. Most symptoms peak in 48 hours and last for five to seven days. Some symptoms, such as unusual dreams and irritability, can last for weeks.
What about lung problems, will it cause lung disease? The association between tobacco smoking and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) HAS been established. Longterm pot smoking is associated with many symptoms of obstructive pulmonary disease: airflow obstruction, chronic cough, bronchitis, and decreased exercise tolerance. Regular smokers of three to four marijuana cigarettes per day experience cough, wheeze, and sputum production and exhibit abnormalities in the lungs equivalent to those who smoke approximately 20 tobacco cigarettes per day.
BTW - for those thinking pot smoking among adults is widely PREVELANT....
Among adults in the U.S., the prevalence of use has remained 4 percent since the early 1990s.

Obviously, smoking is not healthy. But to say people have not been misinformed is ridiculous. How do you think it became illegal in the first place? It wasn't always illegal. For starters, the cotton industry saw hemp as a threat because they were a major competitor. Enter the anti-marijuana propaganda and here we are now.

Withdrawal - Once again, not seeing any proof behind what she is saying. I have smoked marijuana nearly every day this summer, and now that I am visiting my parents I have not had contact with it in the last 2 weeks. I have felt nothing near what she is describing, and I have taken many breaks before for sports and vacations. Maybe I am not the norm, but I am friends with too many potheads and never once have they related to any of these when withdrawing.
Lungs - Have you heard of a bong? Or a vaporizer? I'm guessing not. Joints are hell on your lungs, and most smokers should know that. Hell I even had a joint phase for most of my senior year, and never had any coughing/wheezing problems. Not all forms of marijuana intake are the same.

It has been proven that weed is the most dangerous drug in the world. Between overdoses, car accidents, and accidents on the job, there are more deaths per year than alcohol. Smoking weed has also been proven to induce schizophrenia and turn people gay. There is no hardcore data that shows there is any medical benefits whatsoever to smoking weed, it is commonly known to be propoganda put forth by hippies, homosexuals, stoners, gangbangers, murderers and terrorists to get the drug legalized. This is a drug that should remain illegal and posession should be punishable to the fullest extent of the law.

Obviously, smoking is not healthy
Smoking out of a vaporizer is a good work around for that :p
And there's always edibles..
Look, if so many folks are using it, so many acheivers...like politicians, than eventually it will be changed right?
Once again, you comment on things that you have no idea about. Watch a documentary called American Drug War: The Last White Hope - War on Drugs and get back to us.

he should go to jail for at least ten years. anyone stupid enough to smoke pot poses a huge threat to society, and needs to be put away.
i agree. i think bosh and lbj should be put away for 7 years as well.
marijuana kills.

While I disagree with DD saying most adults don't smoke weed...
most adults dont smoke weed - the stats ive seen say its around 8-10%.
If a job does random drug testing there is no way I would risk my job in this economy just to smoke weed.
or at the very least you probably wouldnt be dumb enough to be driving around smoking (allegedly).

Look, I don't care if you smoke, doesn't bother me one bit, just realize that you are taking a big risk, as it is against the law.
its really not that risky as long as you dont do stuff like drive around smoking weed. i buy it, take it back to my house and leave it there - not a problem.
I do like all the folks taking my comments about Marijuana as a personal attack
i dont take your comments about marijuana as a personal attack, but you seem overly judgmental wrt to pot smokers themselves - you said marijuana users are stupid, make poor choices and are underachievers - its easy to see how one might construe your comments to be personal attacks.
Look, if you smoke....who ****ing cares?
seems like you care alot.
All I am saying is that as you get older (as a general rule) most people give it up.
then call me rick astley cause im never gonna give it up.
your statement about it being worse than Marijuana is odd....
from a health perspective there is no comparison - alcohol is way worse. as a public safety issue (intoxicated driving/fighting/rape/ect) alcohol is way worse. as far as number of people who die per year its no comparison - thousands and thousands die each year from alcohol vs. none for marijuana.
I would love to see that proof, from an unbiased source, please.
you make this statement and then post a link to that garbage website?
Can you have withdrawal symptoms if you stop smoking pot? Yes, if you are a chronic user you may have withdrawal symptoms after abrupt cessation. Marijuana withdrawal begins within ten hours of the last dose and consists of irritability, agitation, depression, insomnia, nausea, anorexia, and tremor. Most symptoms peak in 48 hours and last for five to seven days. Some symptoms, such as unusual dreams and irritability, can last for weeks.
that is asinine. i smoke everyday and went to guatemala in june - didnt smoke at all for over 2 weeks and i suffered none of these so-called withdrawal symptoms. i slept great, ate tons of good food, was not agitated in the least or irritable and most certainly did not have tremors. what a load of b.s.

i find it "highly" ironic that the guy who averages 16.42 f***ing posts a day accuses others of being lazy and unmotivated and implores them to get off the couch. im going to go out on a short limb and say that ive got a much more active life than you.

amsterdam is really cool, even if you dont smoke. its so pedestrian friendly and scenic - amazing museums, good food, lots of history. i went to europe in 05, flying in and out of amsterdam. i had 2 weeks and this grand idea that i was going to go to amsterdam-berlin-prague-munich-heidelburg-cologne-amsterdam in that time. i ended up staying in amsterdam for like 5 days and went to berlin and loved it there so much that i stayed a week - cologne for a day and back to amsterdam to fly home.
and to keep the tread on topic, haslem is still a dumbass and i cant believe 20 grams is a felony in florida - florida sucks anyway, but its one more reason to not go there.
