View Full Version : [chron] Morey's pitch

Good blog (as usual) from Jonathan Feigen:
http://blogs.chron.com/nba/2010/06/rockets_plot_longshot_pursuit.html
The pitch (mostly Morey quotes):
"I think (players) that are looking at the Rockets, they want the roster to look as good as possible and obviously Yao Ming is an unbelievable piece to have on a roster, a great center, an All Star and great teammate," Morey said.
"We feel like we're a great destination. We don't really feel like we're the underdog. We think any free agent, when they take the time to look through their options - and they all will - they're going to see us as a very interesting option. Obviously a great roster that's ready to win. We're adding one All-Star in Yao Ming back. We're hoping through free agency we can add another All Star. We have a lot of stability with our owner being one of the top owners in the league and our coach obviously (having) been one of the top coaches in the league. That's something not many of the destinations can offer. Houston is a great city, the best weather during the season as any NBA city. No state income tax.
"If free agents out there want to be a global presence, we have more people tuning in to our regular season games each game than the Super Bowl. We have a lot to offer and we have a roster that's built like a championship roster ready to win. I think the free agents out there focused on winning will see us as a great destination."
He was just warming up. He even seemed to slip in a shot at the Heat, who have reduced their roster to two players to create room to add Bosh and James to Wade, providing a few accept less than the sign-and-trade max they could get elsewhere.
The Heat will have to fill out the rest of the roster with players working on minimum deals. Some might be happy to do that for the chance to play with a Miami version of the Big Three, but it's still a risky way to build a team, riskier if it is two of the three teaming up.
"We feel like we're in a great position," Morey said. "We have a very good team as it is. We're definitely going to be a playoff team and we feel like we'll be fighting for homecourt. The free agency situation, what we're planning to do there is upgrade the team even more. If people analyze our situation, if they look at those teams (with salary cap room) those teams are going to have to operate at the salary cap, which is going to be $15 to $20 million less than teams like ourselves. They're going to have to have six to 10 minimum (salary) players on their team. I haven't seen a championship team with six to 10 minimum players on it.
"The free agents that want to focus on winning and winning a championship, they're going to look at teams like ourselves."
As a sample of the pitch, that sounded pretty good.
Let's see what you can do and whom you can convince.

Bosh to Miami done deal. Bosh thinks the whole process will be done in hours not days. Morey will not even get a chance. This is a charade. Kahn wont trade Jefferson or Rubio and Joe Johnson has a woody for Dantoni. We are standing pat. Morey needs to open a cold one and just enjoy PatPat Hill Martin because they arent going anywhere.

I do wonder if Morey's optimistic tone is that he is truly confident in the Rockets' ability to bring in a quality FA or more of a public relations mentality?

And geez, James isnt going to Miami , Wade is asking Boozer to join as a center to play with Bosh.

I think he is confident but I also think he has expanded his horizons a bit, not just focusing on Bosh.
After listening to a bunch of interviews and articles about Joe Johnson, I believe he is now the target and the Rox will play the southwest region thing along with great team mates and fans to get him to sign. Saying this JJ, Yao, Brooks and maybe Martin will be the bait to get Bosh to sign.

I think he's confident because he has faith that these free agents will see reality. Going to teams that have completely gutted rosters just for cap space will not yield a championship. You need an established team with a bevy of support (e.g., the Rockets). That's the formula access.
A steak on a pile of s$&t is still inedible.
But a lot of time, players (and people) don't really see reality. That's what Morey's pitch is trying to do.

Even if the situation plays out like you stated, and we strike out on the major free agent, seems like so will NY most likely. This may be just as big a key for us building a contender as franchise players can be found via the draft, and to have NY's top picks the next 2 years, hopefuly in the top 10 range, would be excellent!

no charade, but possible.. u mustve not seen the quotes from Bosh and Wade on sportscenter this morning.. Bosh told the Miami Herald, "I dont think we will be on the same team" "its like pie in the sky" (paraphrase) Wade said (paraphrasing) "I dont think Lebron or Wade know wat theyre gona do, I dont know what Im gona do.. Its funny all the reports thats been coming out about us doin all these things when we really dont know"
idk about you but that doesnt sound like Bosh to Miami is a "done deal" as u put it and he said he isnt playing in Clevland so Im not sure if ur up to date on ur info..
Bosh is gona sign with Houston book it..

Seriously, if that's Miami's pitch, I'm 100% sure Bosh will sign with the Rockets.

im sure ur referring to Joe Johnson and not Jared Jeffries but theres no way Kevin Martin is still on the team if we acquire Joe, the Hawks will demand Kevin and it would be be an easy swap of the 2 because of his salary

I was thinking about this. Morey is probably the BIGGEST selling point for the Rockets. Im afraid he won't be able to get that accross due to him trying to not sound arrogant and desperate. I wish a third party could get invovled to really hit that selling point home to whatever FA we are targeting.

Well, main thing is that Rockets are doing their best. They try and they will try hard. If they don't meet with success, and least we know it wasn't from lack of effort and determination.

Yes, since that is the job of the general manager- to give in to media speculation and follow assumptions that lead them to "sit tight" before official negotiations have even taken place.
Stop being ignorant. We have nothing to lose by chasing Bosh or anyone else.

simply making the best pitch possible for his team
he is realistic. notice that he doesn't say Houston is the only place someone should look at but he makes logical points, per the numbers, that Houston has the pieces to win and some of the intangibles such as no income tax and Yao's China connection
no where does he say other cities dont have advantages he's just framing his case in the best possible light

Morey has a job to do, it is his job to sell the team to free agents & the fans.
He can look at it a couple of ways...
1. The glass is half empty - Yao is coming off of surgery, his long term availability is in question and the roster is young.
2. Yao is healthy, he is committed, we have a great young nucleus built to win now and in the future.
Now, which one would you choose?
Of course he is going to pick the sunny side, it is his job to do that, and it is the right way to go about it.
Hooray Morey !
DD
I still think about this every time I think of Morey.
