View Full Version : Finals on ABC vs. NBA on TNT

Now that the finals are over, I was thinking TNT should televise some of the finals games. In 4 games, you don't notice it, but when it's 7 games you notice something is missing from your NBA games. It's not just Kenny, Charles, and Ernie. As much as I don't like Doug Collins' opinions I do enjoy his commentating. Same with the other TNT announcer. I can do without Reggie.
Am I the only one who felt like something was missing throughout the NBA finals? Does anyone else want to see at least 3 games on TNT?

I honestly think Marv Albert or Kevin Harlan with Doug Collins is better than the Mike Breen/Marc/JVG trio.
Mark Jackson keeps saying that stupid "hand down mand down" phrase which is annoying as hell, and JVG tries too hard to be funny.

Maybe they should just alternate broadcasters... Having the trio broadcast for all seven games is what makes their commentating stale.

Mark Jackson is hard to listen to. I hope he takes up coaching soon.

gotta disagree jvg is funny as hell just gotta get rid of mark jackson
Reggie and Mark Jackson suck.
I like having Barkley after the game and at half time. Jeff Van Gundy is solid during the game though

Mark Jackson brings ZERO insight everytime his mic is on. He either really, REALLY agrees with JVG or he's really, REALLY against it. It's like, c'mon Mark, you don't have to ALWAYS take a position on what Breen and JVG says.
I'm not shocked at all that Jackson hasn't landed a coaching job yet and I'm 100% sure it's because he can't even analyze a play or a game as an analyst without help from JVG.
At least he's better than Stuart "I can't go in depth with anything so I'm going to throw out the most obscure stats just to wow you" Scott.

don't like Jackson, but JVG and Mike Breen are definitely fun to listen to. I don't care for Doug Collins but Kevin Harlan isn't bad at all. I was actually glad they had it on ABC this year. JVG made the series so much better.

Dream trio:
Dick "I couldn't tell you who that player was if he came up and slapped me in the face and turned his back to me, showing his name" Stockton
Hubie "I can spit out more statistics in a 20 second span than anyone else in the history of NBA broadcasting even if half of my stats are probably wrong" Brown
Mark "I don't need to say anything intelligent because I popularized the phrase 'I'm. Gonna. Do. ME!'" Jackson

The biggest games for any sports will always be local instead of basic cable, Superbowl, world series, NBA final ect...

No thanks... ABC does a phenomenal job. Plus, TNT lacks the money. They got the Final Four.... they're never going to get the NBA Finals from ESPN/ABC.

Mark Jackson is incredibly irritating, JVG is ok but seems to have an agenda (e.g. bashing ORL players to deflect any responsibility from his brother)

when you listen to him, it's understandable why Jackson can't get a coaching job but I hope he gets one soon so we wont have to listen to him

How about they at least merge Inside the NBA with the NBA Finals on ABC. I think Kenny, and Charles make basketball more interesting than any of the pre/post-game shows on ABC.

Yea I agree with that, the half time show is terrible with Stuart Scott. Kenny Charles Ernie thats just a great cast. doug collins rides kobe a little too much; but I love Kevin Harlan.

I'm not ashamed to say I love Doris Burke, as a sideline reporter and a commentator.
She is a consumate professional, and unlike most female sideline reporters, she knows more about basketball then most of the men she works with.
She should replace Mark Jackson.

the NBA on CBS was by far the best. Dick Stockton calls a great game and the coverage was pure basketball, devoid of all these bs marketing sponsorships and empty player hype (how will kobe's legacy stand in history? ).
the NBA on NBC was definitely a step below, but still better than what we have today. at least they had the best intro promo's for the games. and ahmad rashad basically only had the halftime segments, so you could just take a break during that time to avoid it and then get back for the 3rd quarter.
the NBA on TNT was pretty good 15 years ago.....Dick Versace was comedy!
the NBA on ABC is a square peg in a round hole. it's like a disinterested stepaunt taking out 3 minutes of time between her tanning session & bleach-blonde highlighting to pay the minimum attention to the little bastard orphan she doesn't really give a damn about. their coverage could not be any more disaffected or bland.

My problems with ABC are:
1) The music. If they're not using some lame pop song, it's that little funk tune during cuts to break and highlights. It's not a bad theme at all, it's just not exciting or dramatic.
2) Stuart Scott. He's just annoying. And when he does that little thing where he's like "Oh, some guy by the name of...Michael Jordan. Ever heard of him?" I wanna barf
3) Magic Johnson. I like him, but he is a chemistry killer on any set.
4) They don't do enough to promote it and they certainly don't show enough regular season games.
What I like about ABC
1) Production values. Graphics, pre-game video, sets, feeds, they're all top notch.
2) Commentating crew. I've actually come to like Mark Jackson alright, especially once I stopped getting annoyed at "mama there goes that man" and just started feeling sorry for him instead. Breen, on the other hand, needs to lay off the "BANG!" a little bit. JVG is always good.
3) Wilbon and Jon Barry are good in the halftime show. They'd both be even better if they could loosen things up a bit.
All in all I'm okay with it. TNT will always be better as long as they have the inside the NBA guys.

They just need to get charles, kenny, and ernie for the studio show. Even if the game sucks at least you have them. I never watch the abc/espn halftime, but always catch the tnt one.

I can’t stand Mark Jackson during the game broadcasts. The pregame show for ABC is terrible. Stuart Scott thinks he is “cool”. Mike Wilbon brings little to the table and just rides Magic Johnson. Jon Barry is okay but I like Brent Barry a lot better. He is more natural on TV. Magic can’t speak English. ABC/ESPN has all the resources in the world and I don’t understand why they can’t go after better people. Heck, Turner’s second team is better than the ABC crew IMO. Brent Barry and Kevin McHale are pretty solid. I think guys like Paul Shirley and Scott Pollard could be good analysts if they want. Just because you are good player doesn’t mean you are a good announcer. Just ask Emmitt Smith.

Whenever the game is abc, I use the SAP feature on my remote for spanish commentary. I'd rather understand very little of what the commentators are saying then listen to JVG and Mark Jackson.

Well the ABC studio show is straight teleprompter. Scott is reading from a script the entire time, Obama style, whereas Ernie Johnson is actually having a conversation with Kenny and Charles, like three guys at home talking about the game.
On the other hand, NBATV has tried to copy the TNT format and it's awful, you need people who can carry on an intelligent conversation. Eric Snow has the personality and insight of a potted plant, and Dennis Scott has nothing to offer.

Eric Snow, Dennis Scott, and Steve Smith all suck on TV. They know basketball but just don't know how to present it. They don't have "it". By far the worse analyst I see on TV is Bruce Bowen. Dude makes Emmit Smith look good on TV.

I loved the NBA on NBC, just thought it was a perfect marriage. Marv/Zar did the East and BIG games while Gumbal/Enberg, Walton, Snapper did the West along with the intro were ideal. They had it down but I guess money talks but my biggest issue with ABC is the dam schedule. You knew that Xmas was a GREAT doubleheader and then in Jan every Sunday was a killer matchup but now who the hell knows when ABC will broadcast a game. ESPN is overkill and pretty much a joke with so many dam so-called anaylist. Lets not even mention the joke of a playoff schedule, a 4-5 day layoff between games is just stupid and thats all ESPN. First week of the playoffs was a tripleheader on Sat and doubleheader on Sunday with NBC and TNT/TBS would handle the leftovers, that was GREAT. Games were at most 2 days apart and right back at it, shoot you even had some back to backs...remember the Rox/Sonics in 92/93?
TNT is good basically because Marv/Collins/Zar/Stockton/Harlan but the pairings are way off. Pre/post games are gold so that is great, really not much I can crush them on, just get the broadcast teams right and its my choice.
