Coogs are 16.5 point dogs. We need a good showing here and in our next game to prove we can compete at this level. I think our offense will hold its own but our defense will be badly tested by these guys.

Cowboys 45- Cougars 35 (but it's not inconceivable that score could be reversed).

TheBigAristotle

Yeah that's going to be a lot of firepower for UH to contend with. We shall see. A good showing is definitely going to help our cause though.

Coogs should give them a fight for maybe 3 qtrs but OKA St just looked to dam good on defense last week vs Georgia to see them losing. Turnovers as usual should be the key, if the Coogs get some it could be interesting but if they put the ball on the ground this could get ugly.

OKA St 49 Coogs 34

U of H has gotten a bit too predictable on offense. and Keenum does not seem to be seeing the entire field.

On defense, they just need to start tackling and getting off blocks again.

I feel asleep and forgot to watch the game...UH actually won! This is incredible considering how good OKA ST looked vs Georgia. Now you start to wonder how bad Georgia is but I haven't checked there game vs South Carolina but thats niether here or there. Congrats COOGS HUGE win...this is the type of win that puts programs back on the map! Texas Tech didn't look to impressive vs there usual crap opponent last week so If the Coogs win next week vs another ranked team would mean a BCS bowl is possible but both Boise and BYU would have to lose.

College Football Overdrive just gave UH some love for those of you complaining about that (rightfully so).

This is the sucky part about conference USA...I believe that the best the Coogs can do if there not invited to a BCS bowl is the liberty bowl as CONF USA champs. I have always said that UH needs to get out of CUSA even if they get slaughtered for a few years until they adjust but with low attendance and a crappy stadium it will be difficult so wins like this is huge to boost support.

MWC wouldn't be that much of a step up from CUSA. If anything, it would just be UH doing worse in a different non-BCS conference.

Slightly more coverage, but I think it would be a negligible amount.

Maybe if the MWC did a major realignment and attempted to collect the 12 best non-BCS teams to create a super-conference (which actually would be kinda cool) that could consistently rival virtually any conference in the BCS, UH would see a greater benefit from leaving CUSA. But that's not a very likely scenario.

I just think that UH needs to dominate CUSA year in and year out before they think about jumping ship (or before any BCS concference would think about adding them)

I would love to see this be a new potential BCS conference...

UH - Probably ranked next week
BYU - Ranked
UTAH - Ranked
Boise - Ranked
TCU - Ranked
Fresno St - Nearly beat Wisconsin today
Southern Miss
East Carolina
Colorado St - beat Colorado last week
Nevada
Tulsa
Air Force

Basically take the best from each the MWC, WAC and CUSA which would create a number of ranked teams coming togathar that would match almost any conference in the nation. This would elevate UH as they would get a number of high profile matchups that would easily sellout Robertson or even semi fill Reliant along with giving the WAC and MWC more legs to stand on when they fight to be included in the BCS.

Nah that wont work.

UH needs to focus on:
1. Dominating Con-USA comp every year.
2. Improving attendance.
3. Improving stadium.

After all are complete. UH pulls out all the stops to get into the BIG 12.

You are going to form a conference that spans from Fresno, CA (Fresno State) to Greenville, NC (East Carolina).

There is no way that a conference that spans the entire continent will work. Conferences are spread out enough as is.

Before anything, UH will have to try and lock up Sumlin. If they beat Tech, Sumlin will probably be the most sought after coach in college football. The good thing is, that Sumlin seems like a loyal guy. He probably wouldn't mind being the guy that brings UH out of the shadows and back into the nation spot light. He's a class act, UH has to throw everything at him.

I'm not a Cougar, but any team from Houston is a team of mine.

I don't think any coach is safe at UH. If big schools come knocking, Sumlin will be outta here. Briles looked pretty loyal to us back in the day as well. All coaches look really loyal when you give them their big break until they get a big chance. You really think that Sumlin would stay at UH if he was offered the job at a big time school like ND?

Was with a bunch a fellow coogs to watch this game, it was quite the experience. Its one of the few times I've had the chance to watch them on TV. They did practically everything that was needed to win- they played a pretty clean game, got a few breaks, and took advantage where they could. There were a few questionable calls, but the coogs used the lucky bounces when they got them- tip touchdown, int-td, fumble in the 1st led to a TD. Most impressive was the resolve to fight back after the expected OSU rally in the 3rd. Overall, great 'program building' win, but now we gotta beat Tech if we want any lasting respect. anyone can beat anyone else on a given day, but consistency is what sets you apart. Coog fans, please stop using the U-word when it comes to discussing the record, you're asking us to get jinxed.

Aside from all that, if Im OSU, I would be irate about the clock debacle at the end of the game. Dude gets out of bounds with 2:07 remaining, meaning there should be 1 or maybe even 2 plays before the warning. Instead, the clock keeps going until the 1:30 mark, largely because the players were yelling about the clock situation. While they still had a lot of work to do (they didn't even score once in the end), that was a big deal.

Great win Coogs. Didnt shock me one bit that they won the game. More ass kicking on the 26th vs Tech. Hope im wrong but I dont think the AP will give us the props to put us in the top 25. Keep this in mind, IF UH can get to a BCS game, that will be a $17M payday. They can certainly use some of that money to lock up Sumlin.

Also, going to a big name school is not the professional nirvana it seems to be. I wonder whether Billy Gillespie would go to Kentucky if he had it to do all over again.

the cynical side of my says it wont. I've been pretty hardcore about UH athletics for a few years now, and the campus has always dissapointed me in its response to our teams. I hope I'm wrong. the main reasons pep rallies have good attendance is because they do them in the UC at a busy time.

People don't make time for athletics, they'll just 'support' if its convenient- especially most alumni. Can you imagine how strong our school would be if even like 30% of its alums gave a damn? We have a ton of grads in the houston area and should be one of the most popular teams. Instead, Roberston remains empty and the program loses money. Undoubtedly, more wins like this are exactly what we need, but it shouldn't be so hard for people to at least support us. People always say that "offense sells tickets." Well since the Briles era (including last year) we've fielded many entertaining football teams and yet people still don't come out. Cougars want to complain about how Ann screwed us over, but look in the freaking mirror. Sure we got a bad break, but what happened since then? We didn't exactly go out and prove em all wrong, did we?

This a pretty emotional one for me, just like it know it is for you Mal. What do you think? Now that you've gotten that big brain around this bad boy and all that it implies I'd wager you're at a different place than when we talked last night.

Mal,myself, and many others have waited almost 3 decades for UH to announce their return to the glory days when we ruled the SWC. Some of the best memories in my life are going to those Cotton Bowls as a kiddo.

We've endured the breakup of the SWC and the ensuing shaft that happened. Cougar fans have also had to deal with a disconnect between the athletic office and the presidents ear. And I have to admit every time I heard Cougar High,I bristled.

But.....it was a matter of time, not only because of the cyclical nature of life, but because Houston is a seat of power, with a rich football tradition at UH.

We have started keeping some of the local talent at home and recruiting well in the lines. The Houston area is arguably where the greatest concentration of high school football talentin the lan resides. Keep SOME of that talent and we're off.

I'd expect UH to lock up Sumlin to a big deal. Some might say that we can't afford him. I'd say that we can't afford not to get a signature on the dotted line.

We filled up the Astrodome on a regular basis and I assure folks we will fill up a new stadium down the road with a jump to the SEC in the next few years not being farfetched.

Lastly, hats off as usual to Maggard. He came in and did the job just like he did in Miami. Dave's a true pro who cares.

It could be because they didn't play on campus for many years, choosing instead to play in the Dome in front of often small crowds (watching usually bad teams). Although the move to Robertson was supposed to lead to better turnout from current students. More than that, it could be that UH was/is a commuter school, with little emphasis on athletics or school spirit, at least when I went there. I lived on campus for 2 years, but how many people go there without ever having that college experience? It's a recipe for school pride that's closer to HCC than A&M.

Hopefully, a successful football team and the biggest win in 25 years will bring the folks back. Like you said, there are lots of alums who have been waiting for a reason to get excited.

This.
Unfortunately for UH, to get into the Big XII would require realignment withIN that conference. Jettison Iowa State and move a team from the South to the North. OU can't go because they wouldn't break up the TX-OU annual game. OSU can't go because they wouldn't break up the annual OU-OSU game. Conference expansion? Unlikely.
As a Texas alum, I'd love to see UH in the mix. I just don't see it happening. I think TCU has a much better shot of getting in, ultimately.

I'm thrilled, I watched us on all the Eastern Sports and Propaganda Network news shows. Even one win against a top tier team is a big one, however we have to win at home against Tech or all this victory means (in the short term anyway) is we have to win C-USA and we can go into the Liberty Bowl as the #17 team instead of #25 or unranked.

Beat the Cowboys AND the Red Raiders AND the Mississippi State Bulldogs AND all comers in C-USA, and we are a big time team and will play in a big time game. But either way its a great win and a sign of progress.

BTW friend of mine went to the game with his teenage son and said the Cowboys fans were very civil and even congratulated us on the win.

Great win, Coogs! I was rooting for you all the way (despite the fact that the OSU loss utterly obliterates Texas' SOS).
Cheers!

As long as UT and A&M are in the Big 12, UH will never be allowed in. Ever.

Thats one thing that I won't complain about. I lived on campus for a few years and I've been to practically every home game over the past 3 and counting seasons. The athletic department has done a good job of advertising the dorms and getting all types of students involved, including commuters. Student turnout at games is great. Anyone (read:Rich Lord types) who says that students don't show up to games clearly doesn't know what they're talking about. The student sections were overflowing for the NW St. game, a meager opponent. They've also stopped selling away sideline tickets because of the expected student turnout for the Tech game. That said- it doesn't translate into campus-wide 'excitement'

UH now ranked #21 in the AP (http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings)! Some nice recognition, well deserved.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so worried about the snobs leaving Notre Dame in the top 25 after their lost. About time we get some respect. Keep it going. We beat Tech in a couple of wks maybe we can get in the top 18.

Maybe if Tech beats UT then College Game Day can broadcast from the UH campus on the 26th. Nothing wrong with wishful thinking

If they win vs Tech, they should move up further a couple spots perhaps to #15 but I have no idea how the system and the polls are going to work out if UH runs the table considering no more high profile teams are left on UH's schedule following next week.

It will be very interesting if UH and Boise both run the table.

Once we beat Tech there are 2 games that worry me. @ Miss State and @ Tulsa. I dont think anybody else on our schedule has a chance to beat us at home. We get pass those 2 teams its a 80% chance we run the table IMO.
