If you want sport games go with the PS2. EA Sports have put ALOT of time and effort into the PS2. Madden 2001 is by far and away the best NFL game ever and Im sure NBA Live will blow the competition out of the water also. Fifa is terrific (and Im not even a soccer fan) and is SSX.

Looking at the overall package Song has the developers, has the hype (A big factor, its means they sell like hot cakes!) and they have the history.

Trust me you want the best system get a PS2. If you dont you'll regret it.

Get a PS2... more game selection, better graphics, and if you like football games, nothing beats Madden 2001 from what I'm hearing...

eagerly awaiting release of NBA Live 2001...

OK, shell out 500 bucks on a PS2 cuz someone thinks NBA Live and all of EA's games are boring. Whatever.

I've played just about every NBA game out there, and NBA2k1 is the only one that I have wanted to buy in years. Hell, even my wife, someone who has never liked playing sports games, enjoys it.

DVau, yeah, the Dreamcast controllers were weird at first, but after a few days I got used to it.

I probably will end up getting another system too, PS2 most likely, cuz I like RPGs and Square will still be making them by the boatload, but I am going to wait a few years till the price goes down and there is a good selection of games.

Crisco, I didn't mean that I would buy a PS2 only because you don't like NBA Live. What I meant was that since that's always been my second favorite game, and you don't like it anyway, you wouldn't be the best person to advise me on which system has better games.

Just to let you know - all of the reviews of Live 2001 for ps2 have been lukewarm. Summary:

Great graphics
no franchise mose
serious gameplay problems (slow button response, inability to rebound, etc).

Most have said NBA 2K1 was better.

Madden was better looking than NFL 2K1, but is not as good in the gameplay department, either.

The PS2 also plays Playstation One games so yes, they have more than "8".

DoD, see I already have the PS1, so getting a PS2 for 2 good games and 10 garbage ones would make little sense for me. But for someone like you who hasn't had a console since Pong, yeah, I think that would definitely be a good move for you.

BTW, I just got a kick-ass RPG for my PS, and 2 quality games for my DC out of the bargain bin for 50 bucks.

It's been on "my list" for a while now. And I still have to play Legend of Legaia and Grandia. LOL. But I'm almost through Xenogears. Sure am! I'm old school, baby, stemming back from the original Dragon Warrior. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/cool.gif

I wasn't too impressed with Vagrant Story. It was a fairly good romp, but the play mechanics fudged things up too bad. Hitting bosses for only 1-5 points of damage per swing and driving yourself crazy trying to keep those combat chains going got pretty stressful after a while.

Nevertheless, it had a cool ending and Sydney is a kick-ass character, so finish it if you can.

Xenogears, on the other hand, is one of my all-time favorites. The story (all 900000 pages of it :P ) is awesome, and it's just a really fun game. It's long though, approximately 75 hours.

I have a stack of about 15 RPGs, mostly burned copies, that I haven't touched yet (Valkerie Profile, Grandia, Koudelka, etc..). I just finished Final Fantasy 9 and I think Lunar 2 is next on my list.

BTW, Saga Frontier wasn't that bad.. The idea of 7 different quests is sort of neat. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/smile.gif

Hands down NBA 2K1 is simply the best basketball game ever produced on ANY system. Period.

The fact that the PS2 plays PS1 games is not a selling point for me since it was the crappy graphics on the PS1 that motivated me to buy the 'Cast.

After having seen the PS2 and its initial games I am less than blown away, and the price makes it an easy choice. Dreamcast by a long shot, not even close.

how many systems have sega made that have been dead after one year?

Anyway if you want th best system you have to shell out for a PS2. Please dont complain to this Aussie who had to pay $750 for his system. I feel it was worth it though. You can play off of your old game, DVD's and the the bests sports games avalible will be on the PS2. You also know it wont end up being a system that will be dead very soon. I have a feeling the DC is slowly heading that way and I have a gut feeling the new Nintendo system will also find fans less then frenzied as they have been about the PS2.

I think in a years time the debate about which system is better the PS2 or dreamcast wont be an issue. Sony will still have a vfiable system. i dont think you'll be able to say the same about sega. they should stick to developing games and forget about making systems in my opinion.

Dreamcast is the far superior buy at this point.

Even if there are no more games produced for it (and there will be--Phantasy Star Online, Crazy Taxi 2, etc.), there is a library of excellent titles already available in all categories of games. So, that defeats the "Sega deserts their consoles" argument. Not to mention it has a very good internet presence that is expanding daily (literally dozens of games with internet play and a broadband adaptor). And of course, you can get a dreamcast, an extra controller, a memory card (VMU-which is a great invention in itself) and several games before you hit the price for the PS2 alone.

The PS2 is an overpriced scourge at the moment. Eventually, there will be good games for it, but it is not a huge advancement on the Dreamcast. By the time it might be considered one (and there is no guarantee it ever gets there), it will be surpassed by 2 other consoles.

If you want the next big thing, wait for the X-Box or the Gamecube, as they will be a huge advancement. If you want great games now, buy the Dreamcast or go real cheap and get a PSOne.

Sega isn't just thinking about it, they have pretty much guaranteed that the Dreamcast will be their last console system.

Dreamcast owners need not worry. Sega will continue to support it throughout its lifespan (about 2 more years).

After that, Sega will be devoting all their energy towards software.

I like the ability to play DVDs on the PS2. Madden looks GREAT on it, and I am sure NBA LIVE 2001 will too. Games are right around the corner. I think that in another few months there will be more PS2 games that it will surprise people on the amount AND quality of games available.

I have read ONE bad thing about NBA LIVE 2001 for PS2 though, apparently it doesnt have the Franchise Mode. (ability to play multiple seasons, etc..) It should be out this week so I will be getting it for sure!
