HOUSTON -- Houston Texans owner Bob McNair has discussed the possibility of his team playing at Rice Stadium if repairs to Reliant Stadium from Hurricane Ike can't be made in time for the Texans' first home game on Oct. 5.

The stadium's retractable roof lost five pieces in the storm, and officials said large pieces of debris had fallen into the stadium.

Though he has discussed playing at Rice, which is four miles from Reliant, McNair is "optimistic" that repairs can be made in time for Houston to play at home against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 5.

"We would have to talk to them at Rice, but certainly it's a large enough stadium that it is a possibility," McNair said Tuesday.

Rice Stadium holds 47,000 in its current configuration, but the tarps could be moved off the end zone seating to expand the capacity to 70,000. It was opened in 1950 and hosted the Super Bowl in 1974.

McNair said engineers are going over Reliant, which seats 69,500, this week to look for possible structural damage, but had not found any by Tuesday.

"I am optimistic that we are not going to find any structural damage, the damage is just going to be to the roof and that's something we're going to be able to deal with," he said.

McNair said there is a possibility the Texans could play their home games without a roof, but that officials are worried about possible drainage issues if there is any significant rainfall while it is uncovered.

"If we had weather like this it could be fine," McNair said on a cool, sunny day. "But if we had a tropical deluge the drainage is something that is a concern."

He's waiting for updates on how long it will take to get the roof panels made and installed at the stadium. He'll wait to make any decisions until he finds out how long that will take.

One thing I say is why can't the Texan home football games just simply get moved to the Astrodome if Reliant Stadium is not ready? I see the only real problem in doing such a thing is that seating capacity in the Astrodome for football isn't as high as what either Reliant or Rice Stadiums hold.

After seeing how poorly Reliant Stadium withstood Hurricane Ike compared to the Astrodome, it might be imperitive to just leave the Astrodome standing for any future major hurricanes that might barrel through the Houston area in the coming years and decades.

the astrodome is rat infested and asbestos infested.

this may sound kind of crazy, but what about playing it in Minute Maid park. I know they can fit a football field in there, because MMP has hosted a soccer match before.

Football game at MMP? No way. They'd be missing out on 25,000 fans who'd be pissed off since they have a ticket to the game.

thats why it's a bit crazy. maybe they can sit in a suite, or on the field. or they probably wouldnt even show up.

i just think it would be cool to tailgate in downtown.

Astrodome is out of the question; it's basically closed to all non-essential personnel as a result building code violations.

But here's a good question...why was Reliant build with a fabric like roof in the first place? Doesn't seem like the best material to use in a city in danger of receiving hurricanes.

I think they might get ready for oct 5 (the next game in Houston) they have three weeks to repair the roof.

It'd be sweet to see them in the dome but thats even less likely than MMP.

Rice sounds right. 70 K plus they can get all/most the season ticket holders in there. It'd be interesting to see how they sort them out though.

Supposedly that roof should have been able to handle hurricane like winds. I'm willing to bet McNair has been on the phone with the manufacturers.

Rice has far better sight-lines than Reliant. All they would need to do is add some additional temporary concession stands and it would work fine.

it can handle winds but along with the winds come sideways rain and hail. since the roof needs to be light and is made out of a cloth/fabric there is nothing that can handle that outside of kevlar which is probably to heavy.

That would only make plenty sense. The more workable option is waiting it out until the last hour with high hopes that the game can be playable in Reliant. Then face the realization that it can't be played there nd then have to move the game to neutral Tennessee.
