Reliant Stadium damaged; Monday's game is off
By JOHN McCLAIN Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle
Sept. 13, 2008, 10:56AM

The Houston Texas will not be playing their home opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night at Reliant Stadium.

The game was supposed to have been played at 7:30 p.m., but Hurricane Ike has caused damage to the stadium that has made it unsuitable for hosting the game.

"The facility will not be usable," said Shey Guinn, president of SMG, the company that manages Reliant Park.

"There's some structural damage to the roof. Part of it is off," Guinn said.

"There's also some other damage on the property caused by wind and water. We're in the process of assessing the damage," he said. "As far as the game being postponed again or played, that will be up to the NFL."

The game had originally been set for 3:15 p.m. Sunday, but because of Ike the NFL moved it to Monday night.

The Texas and Ravens will have no comment until they hear from the league. Conference calls among three are scheduled for later today.

The NFL will determine where and when the Texans play the Ravens. The Texans' bye week (Oct. 26) is a possibility.

The big question is, can Reliant Stadium be repaired in time for the Texans' next home game Oct. 10 against Indianapolis.

The Colts game marks the first of three in a row at home. Miami (Oct. 12) and Detroit (Oct. 19) are scheduled to come to Houston after Indianapolis.

Simple to reschedule this. Houston plays the Bengals on 11/10 during the Ravens bye week. Houston and the Bengals share a bye week. Move the Houston/Bengals game to their bye week and have the Texans and Ravens play during the Ravens bye week.

Hasselback is going against a terrible SF team, but lost his top receiver to season ending injury and they haven't established a run game at all. Delhomme had nice start last week. I think you can really go with either one.

I have Schaub and Johnson.....

I am trying to get some clarification on what to do? I only have one other QB and it is Matt Lienert, I was waiting until later in the year to grab one, as it costs us 20 points to do it.

Now, I am screwed if I can't get one.

What about playing at the Alamo Dome, or at DK Royal stadium here in Austin?

Wow really? No power in Nac? I'm up the road in Carthage and we haven't had anything bad enough to cause power outages.

That sucks, I need some Houston sports to watch... Especially since the power came back on, now we're just sitting here twiddling our thumbs since it's pointless to go anywhere.

This was the right call to make. With Reliant damaged and all of the power outages, there's simply no way this game could have been played. I was amazed to see some people criticizing this decision when there are folks in the Houston area who have lost everything. After all, there are things more important than a football game.

Well,

I did get screwed as our league took a vote about whether to extend the waiver wire period for 3 teams that were effected by Ike.

One low life voted no.....and therefore we got stuck with players starting that were off this week.

Well......I STAMPED all over that lame naysayer....and behind Santana Moss, Brandon Marshall, and McFadden, I am up by 18 points going into tonight with my opponent having a Philly reciever, and me having Westbrook.

Ain't karma a bitch?

Nice! I managed to win this week even with my QB Carson Palmer scoring negative points. His butt is getting benched. Picked up Kurt Warner for next week. Postponing the Texans game was the right decision, unlike what the Astros were forced to go through. Still trying to get over my disdain for Drayton Mclane and Bum Selig  .

Texans considering Rice Stadium for next home game (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080916/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_texans_stadium_mcnair_1)

HOUSTON - Houston Texans owner Bob McNair has discussed the possibility of his team playing at Rice Stadium if repairs to Reliant Stadium from Hurricane Ike can't be made in time for its first home game on Oct. 5.

The stadium's retractable roof lost five pieces in the storm and officials said large pieces of debris had fallen into the stadium.

Though he has discussed playing at Rice, which is four miles from Reliant, McNair is "optimistic" that repairs can be made in time for Houston to play at home against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 5.

Makes sense. I was kind of hoping they'd consider the Alamodome. I'd be there in a heartbeat...

Agreed...Wish MLB would have come to the same conclusion...

I haven't seen too much regarding Reliant Stadium but hopefully it can be repaired soon...
