View Full Version : Another reason for Astros fans to hate the Cubs

Because they are assholes.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080912/ap_on_sp_ba_ne/bbn_cubs_astros_postponements_5

1) Bitching because the Astros wouldn't move it to Milwaukee (an hour drive from Chicago)

2) Bitching because the Astros didn't want to play in St. Louis.

3) Bitching because the Astros actually want to play the games In Houston they were originally scheduled. In front of Houston crowds and taking in the revenue they should receive from the game.

4) Showing no concern for the fact that the players are having to evacuate their families amid trying to figure out what they are going to do about the game.

Totally Classless.

also I will start an "unofficial"thread for these games once it is decided where to pay them

Not at all. And I guarantee you that if the situation was reversed, and the Astros players were calling for games to be played in Dallas or Arizona, the Cubs would be going ape-s*** over the loss of their precious "friendly confines" advantage.

The Cubs are just trying to squeak out any advantage they can get, knowing that they're not playing their best baseball going into the playoffs, and another first round exit looms.

perhaps you mean this guy...........

The Cubs and Astros have Monday off so it's reasonable to expect at least one game to be played that day.

However, if for some reason or another it gets bumped into the "if necessary" category, that could benefit the Astros in at least a couple of ways:

1. Heal the injuries: Wigginton, Matsui, Wandy, Backe, Lee?
2. The Cubs may have clinched by the last week so if we had to make up the games at that point, they may rest their big guns.

Note: I was just watching the ESPNews ticker and it said the teams are exploring all possible solutions, including playing the games in another city.

You guys are babies. How come you wont go to a neutral site?

at least Cubs fans "standed" up.........

Fans? Sure. But actual Astros players and the GM whining to the MEDIA about this? Doubtful.

The fact that the Cubs (and their GM) found it necessary to talk to the media about how they felt dissapointed about the lack of a neutral site was pretty amateurish.

The only thing they should have said was "our thoughts are with the Astros and their families. Whatever decisions are made by MLB should be secondary at this point... we just hope everybody is safe."

We not assholes, we just wanted to play, nothing wrong with that.

There is something wrong with, especially, players and managment (and fans) not recognizing the bigger picture.

Players are excused all the time by all for wanting to be with their families in times of crisis (illness, death) and times of joy (births). Shouldn't players be excused for wanting to be with/help their families in times of natural disaster? Shouldn't other teams/players be tolerant and understanding of that?

How is this any different from a Cubs game getting postponed at Wrigley because of rain? They don't move to a neutral site during inclement weather, they play the game at a later date.

And this situation is much more than just inclement weather....the players should be allowed to focus on their families right now.

Plus, I don't think it's fair for the Astros to give up a couple of home games while they are in a fight for a playoff spot. No reason at all the games can't be played at a later date.

Cool, I wasn't completely sure but that was my guess.

Anyhow, A.J. was the first thing that came to mind after reading the OP. I would have added him as another reason to hate the Cubs if you hadn't already indirectly taken care of it. What pisses me off most about that guy though isn't actually the annoying pro-Cubs crap he spews out but rather the fact that he claims to also be an Astros fan. I am also an Indians but would never go around bragging about them when they are having a good season, especially in an Astros forum, just like I wouldn't go around bragging about the Astros when they're doing well. I fear seeing an Astros-Indians WS one day. It would be a bittersweet result no matter how it played out.

Unfortunately, it's now Progressive Field. I wish it was still Jacobs Field.

My father's side of the family is from the Cleveland area and they are all diehard Indians/Browns fans. I actually lived in Bowling Green for a couple of years when I was a kid. I never went to a game at the Jake but have been to a few Indians games in other cities. The first MLB game I ever went to was in 1986 at Fenway when the Red Sox played the Indians. We stopped in Boston on our way to Maine. It was actually the game where Clemens clinched his first 20-win season:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS198608300.shtml

I've been a Clemens fan ever since that day. There is no good reason for that other than I was kid and I saw him pitch. I was never, and never will be, a Red Sox fan. I was pretty excited though when Clemens became an Astro.

I don't know who I'd root for the next time the Indians play the Astros. I've been an Indians fan for over 20 years and an Astros fan for a little over 5 (started following them after moving to Houston in 2002). Over the past several years, I've gotten more and more into the Astros and follow them much more than the Indians at this point. I still get Extra Innings though solely to watch the Tribe.

I will always remember the awesome run the Indians had in the 90s and the disappointment of coming so close twice. There was a constant influx of talent on those teams for several years, especially offensively. Hitters like Belle, the Alomars, Manny, Lofton, Thome, Baerga, Gonzalez, Murray, Williams and pitchers like Nagy, Colon in his prime, Mesa, Hershiser, Martinez, etc...

It's awesome to see what Cliff Lee is doing this year. He wasn't even supposed to be their third best pitcher coming into the season. Sabathia, Carmona and Westbrook were all ahead of him in the rotation. If he doesn't win the AL Cy Young this season, I will lose all faith in humanity. As good as Halladay has been, Lee has clearly been better in my mind. K-Rod shouldn't get it over him, either, even if he gets 60+ saves.

I lived in Fremont for a few years, about 15-20 miles from Bowling Green, I'm sure you have heard of Sandusky.....(Cedar Point, Tommy Boy) thats where my roots lie.

I haven't been keeping up with the Indians for a few years, after I moved back to Texas in '03, I just kinda quit watching them. I took my daughter to the Jake once when we lived up there, spectacular field. we also went to the old tigers stadium......complete sh!thole.

I never saw that post and as far as I'm concerned, A.J. shouldn't have the right to use the word "we" when referring to Astros fans (he did this in several other posts). Cubs fan or not, if you are truly an Astros fan in any way, you don't come in here and gloat when the Cubs are winning or talk trash about the Astros under any circumstances. The way I see it, since A.J. said he was kidding about being a Cubs fan and talked trash about the Astros, he isn't a real fan of either team.

Obviously, AJ is under the age of 12, so the only thing he is a fan of is playing with himself and cotton candy. Every time that kid posts, I imagine the scene from A League of Their Own, in which the little bratty kid is running up and down the bus aisle with a chocolate bar all over his face.

The quotes from McLane sound more and more like this will actually go to Milwaukee, and that's absolutely a travesty. Take away the biggest series of the Astros season and make them virtual road games -- it's unbelievable.

I'm not insensitive to the needs of greater Houston, but playing the games in Houston this weekend isn't the only alternative. They can play them after the season, if it turns out they're necessary. They can play them this weekend in a city that's not about an hour from Chicago.

But playing these games in Milwaukee is the easiest solution for Bud Selig, and it sounds like McLane is willing to bend over backwards for Selig again. It's the same principle that led to the Astros losing countless draft picks because of a refusal to go over "slot money" and anger Selig, while almost every other team in the league did it.

I'm not a Drayton basher, but it will be an absolute shame if he lets these games be played in Milwaukee, and it sounds like that's exactly what he's going to do. Yet again, pleasing his buddy Bud Selig seems like it'll take priority over what's best for the organization.

I'm not sure it's quite this simple. After the season is the worst-case-scenario. You're talking two or three days there, with the Cubs maybe not even caring. And then you may have another day or two of potential wild-card one-game playoffs. Teams that weren't involved in the mess could be sitting for a week between the regular season and playoffs - that would be a nightmare for baseball.

I do think another location would have been better. But you have to have a team that's away both Sunday and Monday, where there's zero chance of rain, and that can host on a moment's notice - if you're going to have a stadium with fans, you need people to handle security, ticket takers, concessions, etc. Apparently, Milwaukee hosted a Cleveland game last year in a similar situation, so they might just be better prepped for it on short notice - not really sure. It does suck for Houston, but there a lot of other factors MLB has to consider here.

With about 500 doubleheaders going on this weekend, I don't see why, if they were only going to play two games, that they couldn't play them both on Sunday, greatly enlarging the pool of possibilities. They could easily play two in Arlington, for example, and actually have Astros fans in attendance.

If you waited until after the season, would it suck for teams that had to wait? Absolutely, but imo, that should be a secondary priority to having a level playing field in the regular season to set the playoffs -- otherwise, the entire experience is devalued. Even so, the Astros were incredibly generous and willing to play at a neutral site -- but even that wasn't enough for Selig, who put them in the only place in baseball that wouldn't be anything close to neutral.

You're absolutely right that it's no coincidence that Milwaukee has been the host in both of these situations, and it seems likely it's due to Selig's ties with management there. It goes back to what we were talking about -- putting his own personal convenience ahead of fairness and the best interest of the game. I don't deny that it's a complex process, like you said -- but I just don't see how Milwaukee is the only option. Seems incomprehensible, really.

MLB has pretty well-defined lighting requirements at stadiums. As I understand it, the minor league venues do not fit the bill & were not an option.
