Perhaps, having sent Bay, Marte, and one other away, these Pirates will no longer the '27 Yankees to our Astros?
2-7 versus the Pirates? Are they playing Stargell and Tekulve in disguise?

The Pirates scoring one run is pretty much considered a moral victory at this point.

Had they thrown him out there for the 6th, then he would have still probably been in a 0-0 game since the HR was while he was being pinch hit for.
In addition, he was clearly tired.

He was mostly a reliever this year and only recently started a couple of games at Round Rock. Apparently his max was 5 innings in the minors. He looked great the first 3 innings and barely survived the next 2. All in all a quality start.

I'm very glad it's still baseball season. There's little better than meaningful September baseball.
That couldn't be a sweeter game. After getting bashed about the state of the minor leagues for the past couple of years (and rightly so), 2 youngsters provide the win. Arias looked great. Saccomano gets a homer on the first pitch of his career? Are you freaking kidding me?
GO ASTROS!

Great nite for the Astros. nice contributions from Arias and Saccammano. I just have a gut feeling the Brewers are going to spit this one up. I just hope it is the Astros who catch them and not the Phillies.
Last Friday really hurt with our loss and the Brewer win. What sucks the most is that the freakin Padres had numerous chances to win that game!
RocketManJosh

Can't believe the Astros are playing meaningful games in September. I've counted them dead, then alive, then dead, then alive again this season. I'm not usually one to do that, but man did they prove me wrong to even make it this close. That said, they've got a long way to go, but I won't put anything past this team. The Brew Crew has a tough upcoming stretch of games. It could get REAL interesting.

First 3 innings he looked great. 4th and 5th he noticeably tired, more with location than anything else. they never really hit him hard, but he was starting to lose command. He relieved most of the year and only recently started a game or two at Round Rock. I do not believe he went more than 5 innings in any start.

Is he projected as a guy that could be a starter with some more work? Or was he drafted with the idea of keeping him in the bullpen?

He was actually claimed on waivers from the Rockies earlier this year. I assume since they eventually started him in Round Rock, they probably want to see him compete as a starter. Based on last night, he definitely needs to be "stretched out", but I can't comment as to how he looked in RR when he started.
EDIT: What I liked was that almost all of his pitches had movement. Rarely did he throw anything straight.

Saccomano's problem is that they have Wigginton, Blum and Berkman next year to man the corner spots. It can be argued that someone deserves a chance over Blum, but he can also play SS, 2B and is the "absolute emergency" catcher. With Tejada and Matsui penciled in at SS and 2B, that only leaves 1 or 2 other infielders and they have to be able to step in and start regularly at 2B or SS.

The problem is that if they do re-sign Loretta, he can play 2B for an extended period, unlike Saccomanno. In addition, Loretta can play all the IF positions. Let's not get too excited over 1 at bat and a solid minor league campaign.

What's the point of having two jack-of-all trade infielders, if you need that many it means your players are seriously injury prone. :(

What's the point of having two jack-of-all trade infielders, if you need that many it means your players are seriously injury prone. :(
Barring any trades and jail time, the following will be the infield situation for next season:
Blum is already signed for next year so he is on the team. He will be the backup at 3rd and also has the ability to play other positions.
Wigginton will be the starter at 3rd.
Berkman will start at 1st.
Tejada will start at SS.
Matsui will start at 2nd.
They need at least one competent middle infield backup and Saccamonno is not that guy.
Keep in mind that this season, they started with the 4 starters, Loretta and Blum. With that same alignment, there is no room for a 1st/3rd baseman.

Given Sheets shaky injury history over the past couple of years, I'd be very weary of giving him the "going" 5+ year contract.
Teams should shy away, and I'd take him in a second for a 2-3 year deal, but low and behold... somebody will give him a 5 year deal and live to regret it within year 2.

I'm watching Baseball Tonight and Karl Ravech is trying to insert the Astros into the wildcard discussion but they all seem pretty engaged with the Cardinals right now.
What they don't get is that the Cards have played just as bad as the Brewers lately and that the cards are getting wins against the Cubs who have struggled more than them.
The Astros and the Phils are the only guys in the NL WC hunt playing winning ball right now.

I wouldnt count on the Reds beating Sabathia tomorrow, but if the Astros keep beating the teams they're supposed to beat in September (14 of last 17 vs PIT,CIN,ATL,FLA) then this thing could really get interesting. We can just watch STL, PHI and MIL beat up on each other. Boy, who thought a month ago a Sept 12-14 series vs the Cubs would mean something? Lets just keep winning, baby.

True But that was early on in the season, and as far as I remember they had the WC lead a little bit after the All Star break and held on. 04 was the year when everyone had written them off and they went 36-10 to clinch the WC. Although both years were remarkable this year is more reminiscent of 04 than 05. If they actually pull it off(Knock on Wood) it will be more of a feat than either of those 2 years because this years starting pitching sucks compared to what we had both of those years.

Zachary Levine does a great job in breaking it all down here (http://blogs.chron.com/unofficialscorer/2008/09/chasing_the_wild_card_1.html)
Essentially, if the Brewers go 10-7 the rest of the way, an approximation of what they've done to this point, the Astros would have to go 14-3 for a tie, but the Phillies could ruin it by going 14-3, while the Cardinals could by going 15-3.
With the season coming down to 17 games for the Brewers, Phillies and Astros and 18 for the Cardinals, here's a look at their remaining schedules.
Milwaukee Philadelphia St. Louis Houston
vs. CIN (1) vs. FLA (1) vs. CHC (2) vs. PIT (2)
at PHL (4) vs. MIL (4) at PIT (3) vs. CHC (3)
at CHC (3) at ATL (3) at CIN (3) at FLA (3)
at CIN (3) at FLA (3) at CHC (3) at PIT (3)
vs. PIT (3) vs. ATL (3) vs. ARZ (4) vs. CIN (3)
vs. CHC (3) vs. WAS (3) vs. CIN (3) vs. ATL (3)
To summarize the schedules, here are the number of games each contender plays against teams with winning records (WR), losing records (LR) and .500 records.
Team WR LR .500
Milwaukee 10 7 0
Philadelphia 8 9 0
St. Louis 5 13 0
Houston 6 11 0
It's not only whom you're playing, but where you're playing. Here are the home and road games on the four contending teams' remaining schedules.
Team Home Road
Milwaukee 7 10
Philadelphia 11 6
St. Louis 9 9
Houston 11 6
Check back for updates daily, and let us know whether you think the Astros can make it.

Mike Cameron should never be walked.
Bad bottom of the 7th so far for the Reds. They walk the leadoff hitter, Cameron. Then with 1 out and Cameron on 2nd, Keppinger makes a bad throw to first and Cameron scores on an error.
2 outs now with a man on 2nd and Durham at the plate. Durham has 2 walks and a single on the day.
Durham hits a sharp grounder but the play is made and the Reds are out of the inning.

When did I say anything about the game result? I thought I made it clear that I was referring to him striking out the side. Torres is a decent reliever, but historically, he throws to contact and isn't at all an overpowering guy. His K/9 for both this season as well as his career is 5.7. I'd say that makes it fairly rare for three consecutive batters to be unable to make contact against him.

Sorry - you said the Brewers were the luckiest team ever. Unless you expected Torres to blow the save, what does it matter if he struck out the side or just got three flyball outs? Would they be less lucky in that scenario? Pitchers strike out the side here and there. Torres has done it before and he'll do it again. I don't see how it makes them lucky that he did that today?

I was just going off what Zach Levine of the Chron wrote. Maybe, he meant before games? Not sure.

Because when you put the ball in play, you have a chance for the other team (Rickie Weeks, in particular) to make a mistake and help you. :) Small chance, but given Weeks' performance of late, it's one I would've liked to have seen.
In the meantime, man it would be great to have the Tejada of April come back.

Odd stat line for Moehler, no walks yet no strikeouts either, lol. Can't argue with the fact that he was effective yet again though :)

None really. I don't know if they gave a time table with the injury but he's pretty much done since he had surgery about a month ago.

You sure he was talking about Lee and not Wigginton? From what I've read, including an update this week, Lee has zero chance before the playoffs.

Wigginton's timetable to begin pinch hitting is this weekend to early next week, that's why I'm guessing it's him. It's his injury that has me worried the most too... Ty had really carried this team for several weeks. :(

Awesome. What's funny is on PTI today, they had a segment about the odds of the Astros making the playoffs. Wilbon gave 0, which I could respect, if it were a good reason -- such as the talent disparity between the teams. But it wasn't that... it's that there were too many teams between Houston and Milwaukee (Philly, STL). I sat there and shook my head at the TV, because they were all of freakin' one game apart... and now, less than five hours after making that statement, the only team in front of the Astros is the Brewers.
Never ceases to amaze me how little research or knowledge ESPN folks have on a national basis. They could care less, really.

And yeah, it's Wigginton who can pinch hit next week... he had a setback. :(
HOUSTON -- Ty Wigginton had plans to test his strained groin with running drills and batting practice on Wednesday, but he stopped the running part early when he felt discomfort in the injured area.
"I think if I would have cranked it up at all, it would have grabbed," Wigginton said. "I didn't want it to grab and set it back again, so I had to shut it down. So it wasn't as good as I hoped for."
Wigginton, who strained his groin running out a ground ball on Saturday in Colorado, hit off a tee and took batting practice and is hoping to be available to pinch-hit during the Astros' road trip next week.

I just listened and it sounded like extreme speculation. He said something along of the lines of "maybe with 3 days left in the season, if the doctors say he can do it, he may pinch hit, maybe".
It sounded like blind optimism and prayer more than what Cooper actually thinks will happen.

Yeah, I did too. In any event, they were talking the last week of the season and more specifically the final series, and going against the word of Wade and the doctors -- definitely not "in a week or so."
On the other hand, Wigginton's absence might not mean that much -- it's starting to look like we won't be playing this weekend regardless.

Yep. That's how I heard it as well. IF there is a pinch hitting situation (Cooper specifically said in the last 3 games of the season), and IF Lee can swing a bat, Cooper may use him. Pallilo tried to pin him down on the last week of the season and Cooper did not sound optimistic.

Right, and after Palillo anxiously tried to pin him down on the last week thing, Cooper didn't really answer and instead said something like "I think we will be playing in October and Carlos will be able to join us".

The Astros and Marlins are the only 2 teams above .500 (15 teams total) who have a negative run differential. The Indians and Diamondbacks are below .500 but have positive run differentials. Cleveland is +44.
