Pitching wise, we should absolutely be in each and every game. Well, except for maybe Wandy's. Yet, actually as I type this I'm looking and his ERA is a fairly respectable 4.42 on the road. Not half bad.

With the way we're playing, I and everyone else have a very high/biased tendency to say sweep but I'm going with at least another series win :). Reserving on the possible sweep since it is in Colorado.

The Cat

Hey, Cat, what do you make of the fact that Valverde has a better WHIP than Lidge?

That Valverde has given up a ton of gopher balls, but I think it's more bad luck than an indicator of his future. Valverde's HR pace (10 allowed in 64 innings) is far worse than any other season of his in the majors (except for 2005, when his sample size was 29 innings, too small to judge anything by).

Same happened with Lidge last year, to an extent. Berkman told me that Lidge had some of the worst luck he'd ever seen in a pitcher -- that every pitcher makes a mistake here and there, but when Lidge made them, it seemed like they were all hit out of the park and never went just for singles. Given more time (this season), Berkman was right, and Lidge's numbers went back to normal as his luck became more reasonable. I think that's generally happened since the break for Valverde, and it's a good reason to be optimistic about him heading to 2009...

Alyson Footer with mlb.com has an associate reporter for each season... that was me last year. :) That's why in the Lidge threads I always talked about him hobbling around before games -- because I watched it and knew it was much worse than they were letting on.

By the way, this is so frustrating because Jimenez is so hit or miss. When he's bad, he's awful, but when he's good he has the stuff to just blow people away... and tonight is one of those nights. :(

Runelvys Hernandez suspended 50 games for a doping offense

DENVER -- Runelvys Hernandez, who started four games for the Astros this year, was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball today after testing positive for amphetamines.

Hernandez, who spent most of the season at Class AAA Round Rock, will serve the suspension at the start of next season. Amphetamines are considered a performance-enhancing substance and are in violation of the minor league drug prevention and treatment program.

Hernandez, 30, was 0-3 with an 8.38 ERA in four starts for the Astros this year. He appeared in 24 games at Round Rock, including 23 starts, and was 8-8 with a 4.91 ERA.

He was taken off the 40-man roster Tuesday.

We did win yesterday. I assume you meant Moehler's start which very well could have been a win minus that HBP. Either way, 10 out of 11 is pretty sweet.

Meaningless but interesting stat from today's game:

Rodriguez: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 SO, 0 BB
Valverde: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 SO, 0 BB

Our SP and our closer had identical numbers.

We're no doubt in a tight spot, but we've got some hope with the Brew Crew having to play at Philly for 4 and then at Chicago for 3 amongst the next 10 games. (We'll try to forget about Cin at home for 3 starting tomorrow).

For the Stros, a sweep of the Pirates and 2 out of 3 against the Cubs thereafter and whoooooa it could get REALLY interesting.

Gotta get Wiggy back......is he really out 10 days? Ouch if that is true!!

Should be interesting watching a kid---Alberto Arias---who hasn't pitch for us all year get the start against the Pirates......Big Time Pressure there.
