August stats for Manny, Pujols and Wigginton:

Manny:
AVG: .415
HR: 9
RBI: 25
Team Record: 13-16

Pujols:
AVG: .398
HR: 8
RBI: 22
Team Record: 13-13

Wigginton:
AVG: .379
HR: 12
RBI: 26
Team Record: 21-9

There are more in-depth statistics to look at but I just pulled some of the basics.

Did Ty get robbed? Did Manny deserve the award? Someone else?

I say Wigginton deserved it because of the team record and the fact that he not only had to play out of position for most of the month but did a good job at it while swinging a hot bat.

thats definitely bs. first they go by numbers then by team accomplishments, including strength of schedule, he should have been a shoe in

I don't think you can argue with the selection of Ramirez (unless you just want to argue). He also had an OBP over .500.

seems like name recognition won here.

The only stat that Wigginton was clearly better in was HR and SLG. The OBP was .508 - .394 as Ramirez walked 18 times and Wigginton 1 over the month. Ty had a great month, but as a fan, I'd sacrifice the 3 HR difference for the .114 OBP difference.

Does anyone seriously, actually believe that the performance of other Astros pitchers or position players had much to do with Wigginton, good or bad? It's silly, imo, to use team record as a metric to measure individuals in any sport, but especially so in baseball where everything is so independent.

I like Ty a lot, but Manny earned it, imo.

I agree with you. Ty's performance had little or nothing to do with all the other guys that stepped up during August, especially the pitchers. Team record should hardly be a factor when evaluating one hitter. If you only consider individual hitting statistics, Ramirez and Pujols were probably better because of how much they got on base. Ty has really been on a tear though recently.

i say you could argue for wiggy or manny. Him playing out of position earns him nothing for this award. Same with team performance.. so I'm fine with either choice.

Being very partial as a fan, I really wanted Wigginton to get it. Manny's been on an equally impressive tear though.

Great trade by the Red Sox.

L.A. since the trade - 16 -16 (they were playing .500 ball before the trade)

Boston since the trade - 21 - 9 (they were playing .560 ball before the trade)

So Manny also wins AL player of the month, just for leaving.
