Pop star and 15-year-old Disney sensation MILEY CYRUS tells ET she's "embarrassed" about an upcoming photograph of her appearing semi-topless in the new Vanity Fair issue.

"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," she tells ET. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

The photo, on stands next week, accompanies an interview with Miley and her dad, BILLY RAY, and were shot by famed photographer ANNIE LEIBOVITZ. As seen on our show promo last week, they show Miley sitting in profile with just a blanket wrapped around her chest.

Vanity Fair editors respond: "Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day. Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley. In fact, when BRUCE HANDY interviewed Miley, he asked her about the photo and she was very cheerful about it and thought it was perfectly fine."

However, a Disney Channel spokesperson says: "Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."

Bad lighting/makeup aside, they've got pretty messed-up definitions of what "art" has to be these days. There are overtones in those photos that should NEVER exist for: 1) any photos of anyone under 18, and 2) any photos of two family members together.

None of this bothers me. I think she's a great kid and has a terrific father. They were lucky enough to have photos taken by a highly regarded artist with a camera. Kudos to them!

Actually, Disney has found a way to prolong the 15 minutes thing:

Disney's formula for creating a female "star" :

1) as a young child, have her act in parts on Disney show(s)
2) a little older, give her her own show
3) at the same time, Disney builds her singing career
4) soon after, girl makes movies for Disney
5) a little older, girl gets bad press for something, such as eating or drinking disorder, lip sync'ing, etc.
6) shortly thereafter, girl seeks help for her problem.
7) shortly thereafter, girl releases comeback music and movies.
8) as girl's time as a star dwindles, find another girl and repeat process.

Though the girls start this process at a very young age, Disney gradually builds up images of sexuality throughout the above process. Eventually you'll see them gyrating their butts to music, wearing revealing clothing, and prancing around in high heels. Your first reaction may be to say "hey! that sounds hot!"... but remember - we're talking about girls who are 13 - 15 years old.

Um not really. I'm no professional photog. but I think these days one can view the pictures once they've been taken. Miley or her "manager" HAD to have seen the pics before they left the set that day. Am I to believe it was just Miley alone on the set and she had no "handlers" or anyone in her business circle on the set? Bullsh&t.
Her dad is riding on her coattails and rolling with Disney in the way they "whore"out their young female stars. From TV show to music album and concerts to a line of just about every product. They're all disingenuous because I don't doubt that they were fine with the pictures until they heard the public outcry from the parents of miley fans.
