Remember, no PBP in these threads and keep the chatter on topic (if it is about something other than this series, talk about it in another thread).

4-23 Chris Sampson, RHP (0-2, 8.74) vs. Bronson Arroyo, RHP (0-2, 5.48) 6:10 on FSN

4-24 Jack Cassel, RHP (0-0, -.--) vs. Johnny Cueto, RHP (1-1, 3.42) 11:35 on FSN

Sorry. You missed the ~47 months of Brad Lidge b.s. psychoanalysis around here.

I didn't see what you were describing. Judging from his very, very audible use of the word "****" as he was coming off the mound in the 1st, I'd venture to guess that he was just a little upset with himself for making a bad pitch. That doesn't tell me anything about his confidene level though.

Fair enough. I did have a good read of the most recent psychoanalysis on the Could it get any more depressing thread but thought I'd stay out of that one lol. Was just wondering why Sampson had such poor outings in his last 2 starts. I know he was ill but I was just hoping that hadn't knocked his confidence. I suppose when Griffey Jr. hit that homer I was just fearing the worst and maybe saw something that wasn't there. Good stuff since then though.

Kaz, Tejada & Pence. There are no holes in this lineup. When Wigginton & Bourn get back, the bench looks to be in great shape as well. It's not a bad thing, maybe even a good thing, to get those guys - Loretta, Erstad, Blum - some starts early in the season.

Pence has raised his BA 90+ points in the past 5+ games. He said before the game yesterday that he was struggling early in the season with his footwork, plant foot specifically. Talked about doing a lot of film sessions & extra work in the cage with Sean Berry.

I'm not sure when we last had 3 straight, but the last time we did it on back-to-back nights was in 2004 (back-to-back games in 2006): http://blogs.chron.com/unofficialscorer/2008/04/two_fist_pumps_for_valverde_an.html

No doubt. Biggio took him under his wing last year: show up early, work hard, be a professional, etc.... Wade said one of Erstad's roles this year is as a mentor for Hunter. It's taken hold with Pence. I've read, and JD has noted on the broadcast that nobody works harder than him, especially while he was struggling early this season.

It makes the "Pence parties too much..." crap heard occasionally that much more ridiculous.

Yeah, it's an interesting move. Coop says that Ausmus is his extra utility infielder now, but with Loretta & Blum able to play anywhere on the IF, it's a break glass in case of emergency (or blowout game) situation.

Has to mean that they see Wigginton coming back soon. He can hit, has taken BP, was scheduled to take infield for the first time yesterday or today. That's the holdup - when will his hand hold up to catching the ball (insert joke here). They can drop a pitcher then to even things out.

Unless there's something going injury-wise with another pitcher that hasn't been reported. Wright had a minor finger issue earlier that might have flared up last night, but that's pure speculation.

I don't get at all Coop taking Kaz out of the lineup especially considering how much of a catalyst he's been since joining the team. Jeez, he's played 6 games so it's not like we've been overworking him.

I understand holding back Bourn, since his groin injury is easy to re-injure, but what's up with holding Carlos back too. He's had some good swings lately and seems to be coming around.

Is he not taking enough of a lead? He is 1-for-4 this season. He has tons of speed so he must be doing something wrong. That's pretty much what I've noticed. He still has his speed, but he doesn't seem to be aggressive enough. He needs a larger lead, especially against a better arm.

He's a sinkerballer like Sampson who has to keep the ball down & get a ton of ground ball outs. Both his sinker & change have been up so far today.

Aside from the small lead & good throwing catcher, Pence has also never seen this pitcher & didn't look like he got a good jump, dunno why he chose to go there.

Nice job by Tim Byrdak......we may be keeping 13 pitchers for awhile if he keeps it up. Having 2 lefties in the bullpen would give Coop some more options. Interesting (per the article below) that the Tigers gave up on him so quickly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lefthander Tim Byrdak, who was an All-Southwest Conference selection as a junior at Rice in 1994, joined the Astros on Monday after being called up from Class AAA Round Rock.

"My career has gone full circle now, back to where it all began with me," said Byrdak, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning Monday night.

Byrdak went 3-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 39 games last year with Detroit but was released after a terrible spring in which he struggled with his mechanics. The Astros signed him shortly thereafter.

"It was an embarrassing type of spring," Byrdak said. "I felt there was a mechanical flaw somewhere going on, and we just couldn't find it. It took (pitching coach) Burt Hooton down there in Round Rock to find it, and things have been going pretty well down there so far."

EDIT: He was 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in ST. 10 IP, 21 Hits, 15 Runs, 9 BB, 9 K

Nice "clean" inning for Valverde against the middle of the Reds lineup. Good win all the way around, although the Reds looked out of it there at the end.

Ground balls-fly balls - J Cassel 9-4

Looks like Cassel will do well in MMP.

(Please note this entire post is an exercise in levity.)
As they all should be when talking about kids' games played by grown men.

And did you just call me arrogant? ;) Much like Billy Beane's "sh!t doesn't work in the playoffs", I guess my dry sarcastic streak doesn't come through the tubes & wires too well.

BTW, file this one away for the next "RHP with great stuff who the Stros have never seen before" conversation.

Winning is enjoyable. Especially, winning with a ton of offense (and decent pitching to boot).

I've become a Jack Cassel fan. He seemed a bit nervous at first, but after the second he showed some nice flashes. Everything he throws sinks, slides or drops. And philosophically I like the fact that he doesn't walk people and he gets a ton of balls hit on the ground.

I would really like to see what he could do with a couple more regular starts, and I wouldn't mind seeing him stick around in middle relief once Wandy returns. He's sort of this year's Sampson, IMO.

Also, Lance pulled a Lance & hurt himself celebrating after the game. Very minor, rolled his ankle on the mound. Only Berkman.

Same here. Though the word is that nobody likes him, and more than a few were hoping he'd be gone.

I'm glad Towles is working out. This team doesn't need another asshole catcher after Meluskey.

No, I don't think Towles will be starting any fights anytime soon.
