Good for her. The ridiculous standards that hollywood, madison ave, and these antiquated beauty pagents make women feel they have to live up to are the cause of so of alot of depression issues for young women. An issue that probably isn't addressed enough in our society.

I don't know much, but I know the surgeon general knows more than you.

PREMATURE DEATH

An estimated 300,000 deaths per year may be attributable to obesity.
The risk of death rises with increasing weight.
Even moderate weight excess (10 to 20 pounds for a person of average height) increases the risk of death, particularly among adults aged 30 to 64 years.
Individuals who are obese (BMI > 30)* have a 50 to 100% increased risk of premature death from all causes, compared to individuals with a healthy weight.
HEART DISEASE

The incidence of heart disease (heart attack, congestive heart failure, sudden cardiac death, angina or chest pain, and abnormal heart rhythm) is increased in persons who are overweight or obese (BMI > 25).*
High blood pressure is twice as common in adults who are obese than in those who are at a healthy weight.
Obesity is associated with elevated triglycerides (blood fat) and decreased HDL cholesterol ("good cholesterol").
DIABETES

A weight gain of 11 to 18 pounds increases a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes to twice that of individuals who have not gained weight.
Over 80% of people with diabetes are overweight or obese.
CANCER

Overweight and obesity are associated with an increased risk for some types of cancer including endometrial (cancer of the lining of the uterus), colon, gall bladder, prostate, kidney, and postmenopausal breast cancer.
Women gaining more than 20 pounds from age 18 to midlife double their risk of postmenopausal breast cancer, compared to women whose weight remains stable.
BREATHING PROBLEMS

Sleep apnea (interrupted breathing while sleeping) is more common in obese persons.
Obesity is associated with a higher prevalence of asthma.
ARTHRITIS

For every 2-pound increase in weight, the risk of developing arthritis is increased by 9 to 13%.
Symptoms of arthritis can improve with weight loss.
REPRODUCTIVE COMPLICATIONS

Complications of pregnancy
Obesity during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of death in both the baby and the mother and increases the risk of maternal high blood pressure by 10 times.
In addition to many other complications, women who are obese during pregnancy are more likely to have gestational diabetes and problems with labor and delivery.
Infants born to women who are obese during pregnancy are more likely to be high birthweight and, therefore, may face a higher rate of Cesarean section delivery and low blood sugar (which can be associated with brain damage and seizures).
Obesity during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of birth defects, particularly neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.
Obesity in premenopausal women is associated with irregular menstrual cycles and infertility.
ADDITIONAL HEALTH CONSEQUENCES

Overweight and obesity are associated with increased risks of gall bladder disease, incontinence, increased surgical risk, and depression.
Obesity can affect the quality of life through limited mobility and decreased physical endurance as well as through social, academic, and job discrimination.
BENEFITS OF WEIGHT LOSS

Weight loss, as modest as 5 to 15% of total body weight in a person who is overweight or obese, reduces the risk factors for some diseases, particularly heart disease.
Weight loss can result in lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar, and improved cholesterol levels.
A person with a Body Mass Index (BMI) above the healthy weight range* may benefit from weight loss, especially if he or she has other health risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle, and a personal and/or family history of heart disease.

not by looking at a freakin picture. do you know what she eats, do you know if she excersices, do you know anything about her other than this picture. I think it would help to know at least some of those things before you declare her unhealthy.

if you think you can judge a person by their picture as far as their overall health is concerned, there's no point of arguing this. seriously, i used to be a good fifty pounds overweight, I am average height, and I weighed 240 pounds. I gained that weight pretty fast but kept it for a good two years. I never had a problem at the time and I got a check up from the doctor including blood work.

now could I have kept that weight, probably not. and you know what the true irony is, after bringing my weight down to about 185 I found out later in life I found out I had diabetes. but it had nothing to do with me being overweight. it did however probably have to do with the way I ate. but you can't tell from a picture, that's the point.

OK so you were overweight and then you got Diabetes?

but yet you do not blame it on the weight you gained?

DIABETES

A weight gain of 11 to 18 pounds increases a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes to twice that of individuals who have not gained weight.

Do you not think the way you ate contributed to the weight gain?

Casey, y'know the funny thing about your whole diatribe? The fact that if you take her height and weight, her BMI *barely* eeks into the overweight category. As in, if she weighed 3 pounds less, she'd be in the "normal weight" category for her height. Don't act like she's some huge pig that is the epitome of unhealthy habits. She's nowhere near being obese.

For all of you guys bagging on how fat she is I'm curious how big are you guys?

Whether she is your cup of tea or not this is ridiculous trying to portray as someone who is being sick. While yes obesity isn't good for you as others have pointed out she is barely obese and as for the BMI that is a often a poor indicator for good health. Under the BMI you could have someone like Michael Pittman is obese even though he is an NFL running back.

Also as pgabriel mentioned we have no idea how healthy she is. While carrying a few extra pounds isn't good its not always a sign of poor health.
Y'all probably think the woman below is very unhealthy.

Did she look like that when she broke them? Just curious.

I know a few pounds on the side is still considered healthy, but where do we draw the line?

I for one, think it's a cultural standpoint. 2/3s of the people in this nation are technically overweight. If you went to a european country and asked people what they thought of her, opinions would not be so diverse.

As for the 17 year old girl, I agree that her metabolism will slow down after time, and that if she doesn't begin to exercise and diet, her weight will continue to increase.

Let's see.....the extra fat makes her more buoyant, protects her from the icy waters she likes to swim in, and provides her with additional caloric fuel. I see she is already 61 years old though, so she's outlived the average lifespan of a sumo wrestler. I guess she really is healthy.

As explained, it's about risk factors. While you can't know if she has any particular disease by looking at that picture, she DOES have a higher probability of getting diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer etc- just by being overweight.

But let's say it was a picture of someone smoking a cigarette. Now not even the most ill-informed would disagree that she could be HEALTHIER by NOT smoking, right? But wait- since you can't KNOW she will get cancer or emphysema just by looking at a picture, why would you think that? In fact, she might be healthier than alot of you nonsmokers! :D

I guess every NFL football team needs to reconsider their offensive/defensive lines, as alllllllll are over weight.

Linemen at biggest risk
It found the game’s biggest players — linemen — are most at risk, with more than a third having enlarged hearts, as many as 75 percent suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and more than half with metabolic syndrome, which puts them at greater risk for heart disease. Those rates are far greater than the general population.

“There’s no question that the large body size of retired NFL players is the most significant single health problem that many of them face,” said Dr. Arthur Roberts, a former NFL quarterback who founded and heads the Living Heart Foundation. “If they’re former lineman and they’re weighing 300 pounds or more, from the doctor’s perspective I would say you’re clearly at the increased risk for a bad outcome.”

The trouble is, while weight-loss might alleviate current or future problems, players’ size is often key to their on-field success.

“In my career, losing weight is not really an option,” said New York Giants center Shaun O’Hara, who carries 300 pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame and has sleep apnea.

Some people are offended by the idea that fat people can't be healthy.

In my opinion, it all depends on your definition of healthiness.

However, this really wasn't the point of this topic.

The point of the topic was whether an 180 pound beauty queen was attractive or not.

The consensus was... mixed. However, the majority found her unattractive.

This girl is to titanic, as thegary's picture is to iceberg. The combination of both is a sunken ship.
