Saints have been up and down this season. They started 0-4 before getting 4 straight wins. Then they get pounded by the previous winless Rams.
Saints going into another swoon. Texans at home. Andre and Schaub are back (right?). We've had 2 weeks to prepare. We had our best rushing game of the season last game.

I'll be at the game and keeping my out for trouble in Reliant. If ever there was a situation ripe for fights to break out, this is it.
You've got the open sore that is Reggie Bush (similar to all the Vince Young jerseys invading Reliant).
You've got the proximity to NO.
You've got all of the former LA residents now in Houston.
You've got underlying tension between Houston and Louisiana from the evacuation.
I don't want to see it, but if the Saints jump on us and their fans start jawing a little too much......
Yikes.
Go Texans.

Bush is questionable at this point due to a possible concussion against the Rams. I don't think it matters because he really has done little this season. When they've won, it's been due to Brees and Colston getting back on track.
With a healthy AJ and Schaub, I believe we'll see the Texans of weeks 1 & 2.

I may have two extra tickets to the game (Lone Star Club, I believe (http://www.houstontexans.com/tv/index.asp?mm_file_id=1454&play_clip=Y)) ... anyone interested?!? I'll be coming in from Dallas Sunday morning so we'd have to arrange something off-line. Hit me up through the board's e-mail feature.
Hoping to see a Texans win on my birthday to get back to .500!

This will be the biggest win in Texans history, they will be 500 after ten games and we can go into the final third of the season with not only hope for a winning season but hope for a playoff birth.
With a little help the Texans can be 1 game out of a playoff spot with game against the team ahead of them (Tenn/Jax/Cleveland)

I'm concerned about the secondary stopping these guys.
Well, their secondary is worse. Here are some of their NFL pass defense rankings.
Yards Per Attempt - 32nd (8.29)
Yards Per Game - 29th (251.2)
Passing TD's Allowed - 29th (17)
Interceptions - T28th (6)
Opponents QB Rating - 32nd (100.4, only team in the league over 100)
With Schaub and AJ back, their D is toast.

WTF are you talking about?!?!?!?
Swoly, Schauby will be back with his big kahuna, AJ. The battle will be whose secondary sucks more? My bet is despite our best efforts this year, it will be the Saints sucking more in pass coverage. So, put simply get in Brees' grill early and often and we should not only beat them but, blow them out. Mario gets some payback for overrated Reggie and yes, Okoye means "fear" in Nigerian (Swahili, I think) which is what the Saints will know early and often.
With AJ back, also our running game is back because they HAVE to double team AJ to keep this game halfway respectable. So, the LBs and the Free Safety will have their work cut out for them to contain our running game and they don't have the horses like NE, GB, etc.
I said 5-4 at the break would've been if either the damn ATL fiasco or the near miraculous comeback over Tenn would've happened. All things considered we aren't in too bad of shape except for losing Dunta. Damn that hurts.

The sad thing is that the Texans do need another defensive lineman. :(
I think Mario would be just as effective (I still think he will be a double digit sack guy in the future) on the strongside and the Texans could get a pure pass rusher for the weakside.

This might be wishful thinking, but I think we could be okay at corner. Hopefully Bennett will continue to improve, and Dunta will be back to what he was before eventually. I really think Von Hutchins will be better at corner than safety, so he could potentially be your 3rd corner next year. Then you've got Fletcher and Petey to battle it out for the 4th spot.
Of course, if that all happens, we might need a safety. We'll have to see how Demps looks the rest of this season.

The Texans have plenty of other needs that should have priority over RB. Offensive Line, Cornerback, etc.

11-17-2007, 03:13 PM
This one won't be close, the Saints are on the rise: the Texans are the Texans, draft kings. They get the drafting position, they just can't make the right picks, ergo, they make no progress. Folks, it is still the offensive line. We have one of the most expensive underperforming defensive lines in the NFL. Admittedly, the Texans have had some horrible luck offensive line wise, but still.

He blew by the RT and knocked the ball out of Brees' hand while he was winding up for a pass. Sack and a forced fumble.

Great win for the Texans...good to see Schaub and AJ pick up where they left off. I wish Mario would play like this every week, he was a beast out there.
As for the Saints, their offense just seems out of sync. Brees threw behind his WR on a bunch of plays, their WR's were tipping well thrown balls, and I think the Payton's play-calling was very suspect.
Back to .500, hopefully this win will give us some momentum for the 2nd half of the season.

Is it me or does Andre make the whole damn team better, special teams, defense, and obviously the offense. Offense was exponentially better, especially Schuab who finally could pass now. There running room for our running backs, other receivers like daniels, walter, and davis were constantly getting open thanks to the coverage rolling on to AJ and doubling him. Defense seemed to be pumped up tahkns to his return and went back to the defense in the first 2 games of the season. Mario transforming into Super Mario getting sacks, turnover, and terrorizing the line of scrimmage, secondary forcing interceptions and turnovers. I wasn't paying much attention to the special teams but apparently jacoby jones is back and kris brown kicked it well, so lets just attribute that to AJ also :D . With AJ we are 3-0 and a legit contender, without him.... well we are like the current t-mac less rockets. IMO he should be getting some attention for MVP considering his impact(im not saying he should win it though).

Yeah but Clark played this week and they still didn't look that great. Clark has only been out 1 full game this year. But the Colts just are a lot different without Harrison. It's that same feeling you get when you watch the Patriots this year, watching the Lakers when Shaq and Kobe where dominanting the NBA winning championships, looking at Michael Jordan when he was in his prime and winning championships with the Bulls. You knew exactly what they were going to do but you just could not stop them, those teams just looked like grown men playing ball with their kids. The teams I just named to me just felt special, kinda the same way the Patriots make me feel this year. I just get this sinking feeling in my heart when I watch them play because I know that I am watching history in the making. And I honestly used to get that same feeling when I watched the Colts play, but I don't feel that way about the Colts this year. Maybe it's the absence of Harrison or maybe it's something completely different. I really don't know.

I think the evidence is mounting that Mario is so much more active when they play him standing up. He doesn't have to get his hands tied up with the OL, and he can hit him with a speed burst. His mechanics just look so much more refined when they have him coming into the play with his hands up. He looks like a player that deserves to be drafted #1.

Agreed! The way he blew up that OL on the screen was a sight to see. I think the coaches have found out the way to use him on passing downs. He is so fast off the ball standing up.

Yeah, it's unbelievable what a different player he is when he's standing up. He was playing like a man on a mission yesterday. Even the Fox pro-Reggie announcers were salivating over him.
Why didn't we think of this earlier? He needs to be standing up on all passing downs. I even saw him bust up a draw play from the standing position.

Yes, especially when he's playing against a guy making his 2nd NFL start. Not to sound too skeptical but I'd like to see what he does next week against a substantially better offensive line. All I saw yesterday was Mario having his occasional big game after which he goes back to his impersonation of the invisible man. He has been a disappointment to me this year because after what happened to him last season, I expected seeing him rise to the challenge and play with that kind of effort every week. The fact that he hasn't speaks volumes to me about his heart and determination and that's something the top pick in the draft should possess at the very least.
HillBoy

Again it's probably his technique - his technique has been horrible which is why he's so often out of position on plays. Maybe by standing up he can actually see what the QB is doing. I dunno, maybe the Texans need to play him in the same way the Cowboys play Greg Ellis. It doesn't explain why he's so up and down in terms of effort however.

I dont know. If I remember correctly I heard on the radio that the Mario and A.O. combination had the 2nd best yards against avg in the NFL on runs to their side. I believe it was 2.3 or .4 per run. I believe Mario has had a better year than people give him credit for.

[QUOTE=HillBoy]Yes, especially when he's playing against a guy making his 2nd NFL start.
Granted he was not the pro bowler J. Brown but the guy cashes a NFL paycheck. I dont see anyone making excuses for Bennett who made his second start and gave up a TD. I really think they may have found the way to play Mario. Down on first and up on passing downs.

I have never witness this from Williams, even last year when he was hurt. Are we watching the same game?
Yes we are. This is simply my way of describing his week-in, week-out effort because you just never know what you're going to get from him. With Mario, the issue isn't physical ability, it's his motivation to play up to that physical ability. Yesterday he was motivated because Reggie Bush was in town and all that entailed. Last week he had 1 tackle. Next week against Cleveland his pattern says that he'll revert to the Mario of a week ago. That's simply not good enough production if you were the top pick in the entire draft.

He played well yesterday but like his performance against Kansas City, it came at the expense of an inferior offensive line. It's when the competition steps up in quality that his performance and impact declines. As for his standing up, once teams see this on film, they'll make adjustments and then it will be up to Mario to continue to impress in spite of those adjustments.
Yesterday he was motivated because Reggie Bush was in town and all that entailed
Assumption duly noted.
Last week he had 1 tackle.

Yes, that *never* happens to guys like Peppers or Freeney.
OK, this type of defense of Mario does no good because it's the old: well other guys at his position sucked so Mario's sucking is acceptable. That's the kind of attitude you have if you want to coast along and collect game checks. That's just not an attitude that will bring a championship here. They have to want to be the best and to show everyone that they are the best. That's what New England, Dallas & Green Bay are doing right now and the results are there for all to see. That's the kind of attitude I want to see from Mario EVERY week and not just occasionally when VY or RB comes into town.

Fact. That wasn't a Pro Bowler he was going against but to his credit, he did what he was supposed to do which was eat his lunch.
Statistic duly noted. Did you watch him play?
Yes I did. Wasn't impressed - was more of the same old Mario.
Which was pretty good, unless you have your nose shoved up a box score.
If you liked his performance then I'm glad for you. He has a ways to go yet before erasing my skepticism. If we are still having this discussion next year at this time then he'll officially be another Travis Johnson in my book (as you can tell, I'm not a "fan").
Take that up with the Texans.
I'm on record here that they made a mistake taking a project player like Mario with the top pick in the entire draft. I'm also on record as not believing that they really believed him to be the best player available but merely the one who agreed to their salary offer when RB balked. That's a major reason why I am still not sold on Kubiak - it's because of that decision and the Carr decision.

a) It's not my "attitude", it's a factual observation. Nobody plays his very best statistical game against the very best observation. Isn't that common sense??
b) It's not my job to "bring a championship here". If you're projecting my comments onto Mario's disposition, that's not logical at all.
They have to want to be the best and to show everyone that they are the best. That's what New England, Dallas & Green Bay are doing right now and the results are there for all to see.
Yeah, that's it. They're superior from a talent standpoint at every freaking position on the field. They just "want it more".
That's the kind of attitude I want to see from Mario EVERY week and not just occasionally when VY or RB comes into town.
You don't know a blessed thing about Mario's attitude. You're making wild-assed, baseless speculation about his motivation and you're supporting those assumptions with numbers from a box score.
Brilliant.

...and that's why, 20 months after the draft, we still have to listen to people bitch about the draft. We have a great nucleus for a defense that can become great for years to come. But, that's OK. Do keep bitching about the 2006 draft well into 2008.

Factual to me MSN. That's what I'm seeing from him and I feel that I should be seeing more given the circumstances of his draft position. And where did you get the impression that I'm projecting your comments onto MW's disposition? Did you misunderstand my response?
Yeah, that's it. They're superior from a talent standpoint at every freaking position on the field. They just "want it more".
Those teams do have talent and a good system of doing things but they also have that burning desire to be the best and that's what separates them from the rest. That's what I want to see coming from MW or is that too much to ask of a number one draft pick?
You don't know a blessed thing about Mario's attitude. You're making wild-assed, baseless speculation about his motivation and you're supporting those assumptions with numbers from a box score.
So I suppose that you have only been listening to Kubiak's appraisals of Mario while blocking out that of others. Questions about his attitude go all the way back to his days at NC State so they should be considered as a legitimate issue for discussion here.
Brilliant.
Why thank you! Actually, I consider you Brilliant as well... ;)
...and that's why, 20 months after the draft, we still have to listen to people bitch about the draft. We have a great nucleus for a defense that can become great for years to come. But, that's OK. Do keep bitching about the 2006 draft well into 2008.
Again, please show where I was "bitching" about that draft. I was merely responding to your responses and restating my position on the decision to pick Mario with the top pick - an opinion I've expressed to you on more than one occasion. Also you failed to note that I'm giving him 3 years before I give up on him.

Holy crap! What kind of bad crack did I have when I proofread that winner? :D
Dunno, there's an awful lot of bad ju-ju going around these days...
And where did you get the impression that I'm projecting your comments onto MW's disposition? Did you misunderstand my response?
I noted that others struggle against good competition, and your response was, "That's the kind of attitude that..." while continuing to to discuss MW. Perhaps I indeed missed your train of thought entirely.
Those teams do have talent and a good system of doing things but they also have that burning desire to be the best and that's what separates them from the rest.
No, their talent and coaching separates them from the rest.
That's what I want to see coming from MW or is that too much to ask of a number one draft pick?
Yes. Asking him to live up to some dreamed-up mythical hyperbole of grit, desire, and fire that lives in your head based upon the performance of the top franchises in the league is too much to ask from your number one draft pick. In the real world, we look at performance, attitude, and work ethic. Unless you are on the inside, you have a clue about *one* of those. Not being on the inside, I have a clue about only *one* of those myself.
So I suppose that you have only been listening to Kubiak's appraisals of Mario while blocking out that of others.
Nope. I've listened to quite a few. In fact, Kubiak has been harder on him than his teammates. A lot of the mediots who decry Williams do it in the same breath as they mention his draft status or the Texans' passing on Reggie Bush while not stating a thing about his actual play of the position. Do I immediately dismiss that mindless drivel? Of course I do. And, so should you.
Questions about his attitude go all the way back to his days at NC State so they should be considered as a legitimate issue for discussion here.
Sure. But I don't see any evidence of a lacsadaisical effort on his part here. I'm sorry. I don't. I see that he's not Freeney in his prime yet, but I don't see laziness or him "taking games off". So sue me.

By having to dredge it up every time someone mentions Williams, that's how. You disagree with their drafting a "project player". Fine. Understood. I get it. We all get it. Now can we move the freak on already??
I missed on the three years thing, btw.

No question Mario was in another gear yesterday. Would definitely like to see that more often.
All yesterday proved is how capable he is. It needs to be a more consistent impact. Even though it was against a backup, I think it was still indicative of what he is capable of....now he just has to keep that intensity up more often.

It's OK. No harm, no foul.

We agree here however I still maintain that having the WILL to conquer and be the best is just as vital. All you need to do is to look at everybody's favorite whipping boy (David Carr) to understand the point I'm making here.

I'm asking nothing of the sort from Mario - I merely want to see him put forth a consistent enough effort for an entire season so that all of these issues can be finally laid to rest. Like I said, if we are still having this discussion next year then something will be very obvious and very wrong. Do I have my doubts about him? Oh yeah. I hate to say this but he reminds me of John Matuzak (without the hell-raiser personality of course) another physically gifted DL drafted by the Oilers who never quite lived up to his promise when he was here. But I feel that I'm being fair when I say that I have found his overall performance thus far to have been disappointing.

Well I have to take anything that Kubiak says with a grain of salt because he has to justify his decision to take Mario no. 1 so of course his official and public position is going to be that he made the right decision. As for all of the others, I realize that they blow hot and cold depending on the public mood so I'm not entirely in agreement with their positions. I also have no position on the MW vs. RB or the MW vs. VY debate because I wasn't in favor of picking either player in 2006. I am focusing entirely on his effectiveness on the football field and to date I have found it to be spotty at best.

Never said it was his lack of effort that bothered me only his attitude and desire to be the best. I also never implied that he takes games off (like Randy Moss used to do) only that he has far too many games where he makes very little impact and looks like just another guy out there.

Well, if you (and others) can come to the realization and would accept the fact that I'm not out to bash Mario because of some personal agenda, then I wouldn't feel the need to keep restating my position. I am merely a dispassionate observer nothing more. I am not emotionally vested in the RB-MW-VY debate (and controversy) and I have no personal axe to grind here. All I'm doing is observing Mario and relating what I'm seeing from him to what I've seen from other players in the past. I know that I may be critical of his play but I also believe that I am being very fair on the subject.
BTW, as I'm writing this, VY aka The Chosen One has just thrown another INT with 1:54 to go in the game against Denver. The Titans are getting spanked 34-20 so I'm getting ready for all of the upcoming PLAYOFF talk concerning the Texans.

You and I place far different significance on this phenomenon. Mostly because I don't believe you can tell someone's "WILL" from what is seen on the field.

I think you are, when you say things about his attitude and his "will to win", which frankly, you can't get from a box score or really even from watching him play. Unless you're in the locker room, I believe you (and I) have no idea whatsoever about these things.
I am focusing entirely on his effectiveness on the football field and to date I have found it to be spotty at best.
We disagree, but I think our standards are different. My standard is a developing DE. Yours is, "he was first pick of the draft dammit!" :D
Never said it was his lack of effort that bothered me only his attitude and desire to be the best.
And you don't know anything about these things. All you see is Mario lined up against (usually) the best offensive tackles in the league and many, many double-teams.
Well, if you (and others) can come to the realization and would accept the fact that I'm not out to bash Mario because of some personal agenda, then I wouldn't feel the need to keep restating my position.... I have no personal axe to grind here.
All the talk does run together. For every time I've mixed you up with a guy who's bitter over the draft, my bad.

Hillboy, I see you repeatedly questioning Mario's desire and motivation. You seem to think he takes plays, or even games off. But the only thing I ever see you give as concrete evidence is statistics from a box score. Can you point any specific plays or games where you saw Mario merely give up, not trail a play, play with little effort? It can't be denied that the guy does have a roller coaster impact on the box scores. That's apparent. But whenever I actually sit down at a game, either live or recorded, and focus on Mario play in and play out, I never see any difference in effort being put forth. I just see games where he makes good moves, sheds blockers well and blows up plays, and games where he gets blocked, locked up and trails plays. But he is ALWAYS hustling, when I watch.
I'm just curious if you can give a game in particular where you felt like he was taking plays off.

in fairness, this has been a knock on Mario for a while. it was what was said of him in college. it was listed as weakness #1 in every draft analysis i read of him.

Interesting but wasn't this one of the main reasons nearly everyone soured on David Carr - because he lacked the desire, leadership and will to win? If that can be true about Carr, then why not Mario as well. Let me put it this way: Ask yourself: Is this even a question mark about Demeco Ryans at all and if not why?
I think you are, when you say things about his attitude and his "will to win", which frankly, you can't get from a box score or really even from watching him play. Unless you're in the locker room, I believe you (and I) have no idea whatsoever about these things.
OK, then if we aren't going to or can't use his numbers or his play on the field to evaluate his performance, then we might as well extend the same courtesy to RB, VY and even the late lamented DC and start using subjective criteria to gauge their performances on the field.
We disagree, but I think our standards are different. My standard is a developing DE. Yours is, "he was first pick of the draft dammit!" :D
Right, I'm mostly sticking with a personal belief in that you don't use the number one pick on a project player in the hope he eventually develops enough to justify taking him so high.
All the talk does run together. For every time I've mixed you up with a guy who's bitter over the draft, my bad.
