View Full Version : Talked to Mike James Today
Dubious
09-12-2007, 09:11 PM
I was hitting balls at a SW driving range. As you guys may know I work part time for Callaway Golf as a tech rep. So as the guy next to me struggled through his bucket, I noticed he had Callaway clubs but not a Callaway driver. I had a couple of the new models with me so I asked him if he would like to try them out. We talked golf for about 10 minutes and I introduced myself at the end and he told me his name. I said oh, you play for the Rockets? He said yeah.
Here are some points we hit on:
1. He thinks The Rockets have the best 2 deep line-up in the NBA...he's pumped.
2. He says Bonzi has lost 35 pounds.
3. He thinks he and Stevie will spend some time on the floor at the same time with T-mac at the 3. He really likes the addition of Scola, seemed like he had watched him play some.
4. He's working out with John Lucas in Bellaire, hasn't really worked out with any of the team yet, starts October 1st.
5. He's just a beginner at golf, I told him all the hoopster golfers are members at Royal Oaks but he thought that was too rich for his blood (forgot to ask about his trade kicker cash) He's been doing his golfin at some pretty low end public courses on the Westside.
6 He is building a house (right over by me actually) that will have an indoor 94' basketball court.
7. He does own a T-shirt that says "I'm Mike James B*tch". Someone gave it to him in NY when he was with Toronto, he scored 30+ on the Knicks that night so, he wore to the next Raptors practice.
8. He did not appreciate Van Gundy's constant ragging, thinks he will flourish with Adelman.
9. I told him all the Rockets fanatics were on Clutchfans and to check us out.
I told him I would post this conversation.
10. I also told him I didn't want to be rude but we do have the rOckHead rule and that it doesn't count without a picture, so I pulled out my phone and he gave me the thumbs up.
So call BS if you want but I have a camera phone photo. I just can't figure out how to get it to e-mail on my Samsung-c417. I selected the photo, selected e-mail, put in my e-maill address, hit send, the bar moved across like it sent, but it never shows up in my e-mail box (I can post it on Flicker from there)
edit: Oh it says service denied, guess I don't pay to send pictures.

Also, about the cell phone thing. I have the same model as you, but you need to be able to send Multimedia Files on your cell phone, and it seems you don't have that with your cell phone package.

Sorry. No Picture, Didn't Happen.
J/K. Thanks for sharing, interesting things he said to you, especially the part about Bonzi losing 35lbs. I sure hope that is true. My biggest concern with the roster is Mike James and Stevie finding their niche and checking their egos at the door come training camp. But if they can pull that off, the Rox may have a major advantage in the backcourt with very little dropoff when rotating guards. Again, thanks for getting the gouge.

Glad that he seems motivated and happy. The Rockets need a big year from him to reach their potential.
It's funny that when MJ returned back via trade, he was big news here. Then AB's performance at Summer League pushed MJ into the background. Then SF's signing pushed MJ further into the background. Then the Scola trade and his performance in Vegas basically eliminated any MJ talk around here.
I repeat: Glad that he seems motivated and happy. We need a big year from him. If both he and SF are productive at PG we will be a major force.

Bonzi looked thinner in the pictures of the T-MAC Softball charity thingy. so i believe what james i saying. even adelman said that bonzi looks in great shape and is raring to go.
If were gonna play tracy at the 3, as i suspected the biggest loser in all this under adelman is gonna be battier. i just see he's minutes going down. i still see him starting, but he's minutes will go down. especially if bonzi comes into training camp inshape. healthy bonzi>Battier

Pretty much agree here. To much offensive fire power on this team now to keep Mr. Glue on the floor for big minutes. I see him starting and playing no more than 26 minutes per game.

Um not really. he turned up to training camp last year at a whopping 250 pounds. he was around 240 during the season. so him being back around 215 ponds sounds about right. he's ideal playing wheight should be around 200 to 210 pounds.

Yeah. i love battier, but with bonzi in shape and francis back and will be playing majority of he's minutes at the 2 guard,it means tracy will play a fair amount of he's minutes at the 3 again.
Last year when tracy was playing the 3, gundy used battier at the 4 . adelman with scola wontbe doing that anymore. 26 minutes sounds about right.

No Bonzi is a power player. He lives on the inside game and his jumper is shaky. 200-210 is too light. He should play around 225 when he has the quickness and power to knock people around.

But if yu look at he's best seasons statisics wise, he was allways around 210 o 215 pounds.
I lso see bonzi playing at the 2 guard and posting the smaller guards like he did in sacramento. thats he's strength. he creates mismatches because of he's unbelivebly good postup game. the bonzi we'll see this year will look light years ahead of the previous bonzi that we saw and cringed lastyear.

Yao, McGrady, Battier are all gonna play less minutes. And Rafer probably isn't going to play any and Head hardly any.
I think Adelman is gonna try to keep everybody at 30 or less per. He's gonna wanna come out against weaker teams and blow them off the court so he can rest everybody in the 4th. I don't think we'll be seeing Yao and McGrady in the 4th if we are up 25 like we saw during the JVG era. They're gonna be getting plenty of rest, rest, rest until playoff time. Then I can see Adelman adjusting them guys minutes up another 5-10 per game in the case of 111 and maybe shortening the rotation slightly. But, even come playoff time, we are gonna have a solid 9 man rotation with
1. Tmac
2. Yao
3. SF
4. Battier
5. Bonzi
6. MJ
7. Scola
8. Hayes
9. Brooks

Thats hat i've been saying and everybody here keeps brushing it off. if you look at Adelmans teams, they were all 10 deep and noone played anymore 32 minutes. that as one of the reasons the kings and the blazers were so good. they just wore teams down with there superior depth and rotation.

Not the least bit dubious, Dubious. As everyone is saying, biggest news is Bonzi losing so much weight. I wonder if it's that much. Perhaps James was using a ballpark estimate. I mean a driving range estimate. Like I'll tell my wife she looks like she's lost 10 pounds, when she's lost 5. ;)

Funny.
I work for a local plublication that features VERY rich homes and the people who own them. It just so happened that either Mike James' publicist or wife (couldn't tell since I wasn't on the phone long before transferring to my editor) called about wanting us to feature his house he is building.
i think you should tell her to do it. how else are you going to prove it ...

Yeah I agree.
He is easily the best three point shooter that we have, and plays well without the ball. I think he was trying too hard to be a third scored last year, but if he concentrates on finding a good spot on the floor, he should get a lot of easy shots.
If our second unit is:
MJ
Head
Bonzi
Hayes
Mutumbo
That's better than some teams in the East. You have Boards, inside game, outside threes, and a great penetrator.
I think one thing that our depth has over a lot of different teams is how young they are. Mutumbo is ancient, but Hayes, Bonzi, Head, and MJ are either entering their soph years (usually when a player breaks out) or in their prime.

Eat less, move more. No special diets or excercise routines necessary.
I started jogging two miles a day, and I had to work up to that. Out of breath after the first mile, I actually had to walk the second mile because I couldn't run anymore. Soon, two miles seemed like nothing.
Changing your eating habits is the harder part. The unneccessary foods I loved, mostly sweets, I either replaced with healthy alternatives or cut out completely. I ate til I was satiated, not to the point where I was full. I didn't cut carbs, I didn't count calories. I just avoided some foods that I knew were really, really bad (burgers, french fries, sodas).
I lost 30lbs in just over three months; I started at 215lbs. Imagine how much weight I could have lost if I started at 250lbs and lifted weights. Kudos to Bonzi for losing the weight, but there's no secret to it.

i aint suprised about the jvg part.
i remember the year he was here, against the lakers, he was all psyched and pumped, screaming after a game winning play, not one he did, but he helped set it up, and the view behind him walking to the bench was of jvg. jvg looked disgusted and could read his lips, like saying calm down, and motioning downward, and mike james was like, WHATEVER! he kinda shook off jvg, and seemed to be like, trying to pump the other guys up as well as the crowd. and jvg face looked pissed off and ignored him. jvg puuled him for the final play i think, and i knew he was a goner...
after the big choke to LA, rafer was here, and mike was gone...
jvg is a funny guy, but not inspiring at all...

JVG did liked Mike James though even if he did acted like a doting father to him.

I had a couple of the new models with me so I asked him if he would like to try them out.
You just happend to have some drivers with a long enough shaft for an NBA player to use...cause ya never know.
7. He does own a T-shirt that says "I'm Mike James B*tch". Someone gave it to him in NY when he was with Toronto, he scored 30+ on the Knicks that night so, he wore to the next Raptors practice.
