While they were professional or before? I played against Tim Young when I went to high school out in California for a semester. I'm not sure if he played in the NBA or not, but he was drafted out of Stanford. I actually scored 18 points and grabbed about 15 boards that game. Of course, we lost by 30 or so.

I have played baseball, basketball and footbal vs guys who are in the MLB, NBA and NFL now but never while they were pros only during junior high and high school years.
I have played basketball with friends of mine who were playing pro ball in europe but that is all

Not exactly their sport. But I went to high school with a guy (John Dopson -- but you probably never heard of him) that bounced around the majors for 10 years (actually won 12 games one year). He was throwing in the 90's in High school.
In gym class we used to play dodge ball with the smaller red rubber balls (the ones you could palm). People would walk out of class with welts on their bodies. The gym teacher was a sadist (and a coach) so he enjoyed it.

I'm guessing that "some rookie" meant professional at the highest level. In college, I played basketball with two guys who ended up playing at low level Euro teams. They're much better than me, but they're no where near NBA level.

I hope you didn't try to intercept his pass. He's been known to split a hand or two.

I played against Ron Baxter a few times. He was UT's power forward on the Abe Lemon's coached UT hoops teams the late 70s. He was drafted by the Lakers, and had a cup of coffee in the NBA.
I played him in backgammon, not one-on-one. He kicked my ass

Well most of you might not consider table tennis/ping-pong a sport, but due to crazy circumstances (small tourneys + large rr format) I've had maybe 2 matches in the past few years against pros. I can loop from 10 feet back w/ no problem, but against a guy who does it for a living, it happens at another gear higher that you can't really imagine until you face it. Kind of like how qb's talk about going from college to the NFL, the defense is at a totally different level of fast that you can't really prepare for. Also, doesn't really count, but when I was a top junior I also played against quite a few kids who are pros right now. They've been on those replays on ESPN they show once in awhile at 3am in the morning.

The closest thing for me was in '89 Doug Drabek came to work out before spring traing at our HS and we would hit batting practice off of him. That was a year before his Cy Young year.

I played basketball with Rashard Lewis when we were both in middle school. Killough represent.
I played one on one vs. Calving Murphy the year the Rox retired his number. He kicked my sorry ass.
I played a round of golf with Fred Funk when I was 11.
I played a casual game of baseball with Mark Portugal when he pitched for the Astros.
I took an AB against Roger Clemens in the mid-'90's. I'm sure he wasn't really trying.

I forgot and b.j. tyler. I was playing ball with tyler on his team, and tremaine wingfield (don't know if you remember him was on the other team) and b.j. would never pass me the ball. so they left me open, and tremaine said something about me not being able to shoot so b.j. passed the ball to me and I nailed a three and another later in the game.
afterwards wingfield tells me nice way to knock down those jumpshots. I was on cloud nine the rest of the day.

Ike Nwanko for a few mins in a pickup game. Dude was scary good.
I kind of bowled with Sam Adams. Except, he was in the lane next to me and didn't know who I was (nor did anyone in his party .....in fact, my party and his were just sharing a lane group).

Back when I was a kid, there was program the Astros had called Astro-Buddies. Kids would sign up and pick a favorite player. Every so often, there'd be a game where you could go down on the field. So, I never competed against, but I did play catch with Metzger and Lee May.

I can't believe I forgot playing one on one against David Wesley when he was at Baylor.
I used to go to Baylor's basketball camp every summer from like 3rd grade until 10th. Mainly because my sisters went to school there and they were good friends with some of the players/coaches. My sister dated NBA record holder Micheal Williams and I got to try on his championship ring from the Pistons.
I digress...one summer, the summer after Baylor upset #3 Arkansas led by David Wesley, I was in the gym shooting around by myself after lunch. In walks David Wesley going to a class. I say hi and he stops to shoot around with me. Finally he asks if I want to play one on one and of course I say yes. He took it really easy on me and ended up beating me 15-13. By the end of that, a couple friends of mine had walked in so Wesley and I played them in two on two. We won. :)
I got my ass kicked by some local boxer when I was a kid. (been 25 years so I don't remember his name. )

no, i don't wanna say that. he was an excellent QB and a really nice guy. it was a flag football game...i was pumped to be playing corner against him...and he didn't care a bit. he threw one out in the flats and i just broke on it right and got lucky.

I played a pick up game one time with Devin Brown at University of Texas San Antonio. Devin played for the Spurs for a little while when he got out of college and I think is playing for the Jazz now. I was going to UTSA when he was there and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, because I do not know how I got picked (i suck). That was the year UTSA made it to the NCAA 64 and got stomped by UCONN in the first round.

Thank you sir. You are most kind to help out a poor rookie.
Here's my post from the other thread that got me thinking about this:
"Since I can't start a new thread yet pardon me for taking this onto this thread unless someone is willing to help a poor rookie out and start a new one.
How many of you have ever competed against elite (Pros, Olympic) athletes?
In Judo I've sparred with people who went on to the Olympics and uniformly gotten my ass handed to me. I've also sparred with someone who fought in the UFC, got ass handed to me also, but I used to train with someone who was on the Ultimate Fighter reality show and was able to beat him in practice. Of course this was when he was just starting out and in his teens. He would hand me my ass rather fast these days."

i've played basketball with some nba'ers who were rookies/college guys over at ucla during the summer they play there all the time. i got picked up once as the 10th man cuz i was the only other guy in the gym that was willing to play.
my reward?
having to guard the shortest guy on their team, Earl Watson.
luckily for me they balance the team out so we had taller players across the board outside of myself, chris wilcox was on our team and i was actually able to throw a lob to him. my only highlight of the night, unless you consider getting burnt left and right off the dribble.

LOL. This is pretty funny...Now that you mention it, one time I eliminated Lee Watkinson (final table of this years' WSOP main event) from a $30 Sit and Go on Full Tilt Poker. I've also eliminated Jesus Ferguson from a $10 7 Card Stud hi/lo tournament on Full Tilt. They even sent me a t-shirt in the mail (it's really ugly) for eliminating Ferguson. I met Scotty Nguyen in person at a casino in Oklahoma one time.

Interesting fact about John Lucas III.
He actually played some tennis for awhile. His dad actually coached at Westside Tennis Club for $100 bucks an hr (which is alot considering he had no background). JLIII was actually decent but not good enough to get ranked in Texas.

so does it count that I played a lot with my coach who was ranked 25th in the US. I think he let up on me, though. That probably doesn't count as "competed" against. He was being paid to let me ace him, i guess.

Cool, I actually played bball with JLIII a few times at Westside. He was still in high school at the time. I used to go to the gym over there.
John Lucas senior is a very good tennis player. He had a scholarship to play tennis at college, but he played both tennis and basketball at Univ. of Maryland.
The real gem at Westside was coach John Wilkerson. He is one of tennis' all time great coaches.

When I was 6, the summer after we won our 1994 championship, I was in a co-ed 3-on-3 basketball league in my neighborhood (New Territory), and I played against Vernon Maxwell's daughter. She tore us up. We got his autograph. He doesn't talk much.
