The link is for True Hoop, an ESPN column/notes. Kelly Dwyer, avowed hatah of ESPN, appears to have crossed over to ESPN's stable.

Is Kelly on the road to replacing Dan Patrick? ;)
For two years in the early 90s, I actually lived in the same town Dan Patrick did growing up -- Mason, Ohio. Crazier, my friend Jon lived in the house that belonged to Dan's grandparents. Crazy-azier, we were messing around in Jon's attic one day when we found 2nd grade homework from little "Danny Pugh," which is Patrick's real name. Just drawings and handwriting exercises and such. Also, a Dinah Washington 78.
Craziest, and most entertaining to Jon I'd guess, was the late 70s-era Penthouse he found under the grate and off to the side in a heating duct in one of the bedrooms. Now, Patrick never actually lived in that house, but still ...
ESPN has hired me to do some work in Henry's absence. SI.com and I couldn't come up with a financial agreement that would allow me to keep writing without having to be poor, so we amicably parted for now. There's just no precedence on that site for a guy coming in under the dot com tag to move into the big time at SI or SI.com. You have to come in from the magazine side, and be 50. If nothing turns up beyond this TrueHoop run, I might have to call it a day with the whole sportswriting gig -- I'm 27 and can't live like this forever. But, so far, it's been a lot of fun. I hope editors, somewhere, can note that the amount of output I put together in the dregs of the NBA calender (July 13th and 16th) will only get better where there are nine games on the night before, or the trade deadline's coming up, etc.

Good luck. And I'm glad you're out from under SI. You are no longer tagged in my mind with a soccer cover and mountains of Knicks Championship editions already published. I can now enjoy your writing without the baggage.

Your line of work sounds interesting and it would be awesome if you could do it until you retire. Hopefully your window will open up way before you're 50. I enjoy reading your work it would be a shame if you decide to hang it up so soon.
What other stuff are you considering if you do decide to move on from sportswriting? Become a journalist for a big time mag or newspaper?

Krazy Kelly
A good writer today needs...face TVime. Write a book and get on Oprah. In any event, best of luck - and don't give up. Don't ever give up!
Who cares if hes with ESPN or SI. The analysis is still brilliant. Good call on Magloire. I saw him play for a few games with the hornets in New Orleans and if he wasn't getting the ball then he wasn't going to play any defense or rebound. I liked the clip at the end also. I wish you the best Kelly. Hoepfully this wont affect the chats that we all have here on clutchfans during the season.
Who cares if hes with ESPN or SI.
Uh, Kelly perhaps?
BTW - (Mags needs some 'Magic'!)
The Showtime Lakes' success IMHO was de facto promulgated by Magic getting everyone a basket before he'd shoot, and generally no one with two hoops. He ensured that everyone 'got into the game'. It was part of his genius, part of what placed him forever in the pantheon of basketball gods.

Well there goes the only thing SI:NBA had going for it, keep us posted on wherever you go.
It amazes me that there are only a handful of good NBA scribes out there and we are now down one, now we're stuck with Charley Rosen  (He knows his stuff but man he bugs me)
Perhaps now you'll appreciate basketball more without having to consider it 'work' anymore.
Good luck with everything, hope it all works out.
As someone who is dying to get into sports journalism (but only published in Canadian local papers and volunteer online sites)...can I ask you, Kelly, how you ever landed the gig at SI???
You're one of the best basketball writers out there, and it's a shame they can't pay you the money you deserve.

The reason I got out of sportcasting was the lack of pay at the entry and mid levels.
You get tons up top, but at the low end, or just starting out, crap.
Back in 92, I was offered weekend sports anchor at KGNS Pro 8 news in Laredo.....it was a starting gig, and one which I was well ready for....
But, their offer of $12,000 a year was more than $20,000 less per year that I was making as a bartender, I just could not live on it....so, I went into computer games.
No regrets....well, some I think......but man....you think teachers are underpaid.
Heck, I could do Gene Peterson's job today......as I stole most of his sayings....doing college ball..

Seems like you got some regular readers of your work from there. At least a couple. However, I do like that comment about you paying too much attention in details about the Rockets because you're apart of the message board (CF.net).
How do they know this? Actually I just remembered while typing that question that you mentioned this bbs to be one of the best in the country or something :) .
Also it seems like we have lots of lurkers from fans all over the country. That's awesome, kudos to Clutch and crew for making this site what it is today.
I don't know who that is, but u can also take it as a complement that people like ur writing enough to gossip about u :) :) . Are u going to be filling in for henry for a while?

After about 30 minutes of searching I have discovered that Mr. Chad Kettner is in fact, Clutchfans member 3814 (http://bbs.clutchfans.net/member.php?u=6450). He replied to you in this thread (http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=119873) last November where he publically revealed his email address to be ckettner@gmail.com. Incidentally, he also replied FIVE POSTS ABOVE YOU IN THIS VERY THREAD. Also, 3814 has a link to sports-central in his CF sig which Kettner's blog says he contributes articles to. So have fun with all that and make sure not to get me wrapped up in a murder trial.

Well, good that it's someone like 3814 -- I love his posts.
But don't do that, Chad. I didn't talk to you personally, and I don't like the idea of former (potential, current, whatever -- I know specific people that pour over that site) reading that I told one person that.
I shouldn't have posted what I did yesterday, it was a quickie thing done on a borrowed computer (my HD crashed and created this whole mess, this is why I haven't been able to reply quickly to all the posts in this thread), and I assumed it would stay here. The only person I told about the (quite embarrassing) money situation was the NBA ED at ESPN. It was my fault for posting it, and I don't want Chad to change his post at the other site.
As far as being pro-Rocket because of my time spent on this BBS, that's just bunk. I started coming here during the lockout year and started posting two years later just because it was the first BBS of it's kind: intelligent, reasoned discussion that made me feel like I didn't know a damn thing about the NBA. It could have just as well been a Magic or Raptors board. If anything, I think twice before filing something about the Rockets or Bulls because I DON'T want to be viewed as a kiss-ass.
Some of you have said some really sweet things on this thread, and I want to thank you for that. It's been a tough couple of months, hopefully things will turn out solid enough.

Now, which one of you Mavs or Spurs fans is "TX Writer?"
I sent you an email Kelly...
...I never realized it would get this reaction - I just didn't want to say "I heard from Kelly on a Houston Rockets board" - seeing as how that might portray a bias. Nonetheless, I understand your reasons for being upset and I want to let you know that it was simply shortsightedness on my side...didn't think it all the way through. Anyways - I kinda said the same thing in the email.
Again, sorry. Let me know if there's anything I can do...other than not doing that again ;).

Kelly, I hope you land some place where you're making good money and continue to write your articles. I'd certainly miss them if you have to stop. I really enjoyed the GM rankings recently. I didn't agree with them all but it was a really great resource for me because, honestly, it's hard to keep up with who all the GM's are and what moves they are and aren't responsible for.
To be honest though, I'm not all that optimistic about your future in sports writing. It seems like in Sports writing, as in most things these days, if you're not pandering to the lowest common denominator you're not commercially viable. It's sad really. And you're definitely not a lowest common denominator kind of a guy. I sincerely hope you prove that to be wrong though. I really do.
But dear god if I had a nickel for every Peter Vescey....
I DON'T want to be viewed as a kiss-ass.
Some of you ... really sweet ... and I want to thank you for that.
Kiss-Ass kelly? I guess that means you'll be foxsports.com bound (or writing for the Astros). ;)

Kelly, you will never make it big as long as you refuse to be the loud, obnoxious type. Haven't we learned anything in the past few years? He who speaketh loudest geteth his own TV show.
On a serious note, best of luck and don't give up on what you love to do, even if you have to take a day job to make ends meet. The only way to truly stand out from the crowd is to keep doing what you love, what you're really good at. Otherwise, you're a mere pedestrian in life, regardless of how much money you make.

Wait, so according to the other thread, there are actually people out there that think that Kelly is a Rockets stooge? That's pretty laughable, considering he's been pretty critical of the Rockets. Oh, well. I guess people see only what they want to see.
Good luck in the future, Kelly. If I had any sports journalism connections, I'd hook you up, but sadly, I do not. Coming from a sports background myself, I know how hard it is to get your foot in the door (and how low the pay is). Hang in there.
And oh, BTW, I totally agree with tigermission1 about the loud and obnoxious comment. I think from now on, you should write your columns in all caps and large fonts. And do try to work the phrase "Quite frankly..." into your work as much as possible. Example:
I'M KELLY DWYER, AND QUITE FRANKLY, THIS IS THE GREATEST GM RANKING LIST EVER.

I'm replying to my own response simply to make something more clear. I was not suggesting you are a strictly a Rockets fan. We all know you look at all players and teams equally when rendering your views. I mentioned a Rockets blog (what the devil does "blog" stand for anyway) only because I know you could develop a readership base here very quickly -- especially considering the overall quality of sports writers in Houston. Use the Sam Amico model -- he seems to be doing well in a web-only venue.
Trust me, I was in the news business for 20 years before I started my own business. It's great to be in control.
3814, you could at least go back and defend KD in that thread..no need to let them guys run around calling him a Rockets homer when we all know that isnt the case.
I got the impression from Kelly that I should just leave it alone - though if told otherwise, obviously I'd do what I could.
In my opinion, everybody will have their own opinion. ;)
I like Kelly and think he's great - some others in that thread have stated so - others have said otherwise. The thing is - every known person has people that like him and don't like him for reasons that are both true and not true. Kelly's reputation is hardly a bad one, rather quite the opposite - he does great writing and I don't think he's in need of defense.
