View Full Version : [CNNSI] Carr Visiting Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Free agent David Carr traveled to North Carolina on Tuesday to visit with a Panthers team in need of a backup quarterback.

Carr, the No. 1 overall pick by expansion Houston in the 2002 draft, was released by the Texans last month. His agent, Mike Sullivan, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. Carolina general manager Marty Hurney does not comment on free-agent visits.

Carr completed 60 percent of his passes with the Texans, but threw 65 interceptions and was sacked 249 times in five seasons. Some believe Carr could flourish behind a better offensive line. Carr is also expected to visit Seattle this week.

The Panthers are looking for a backup behind Jake Delhomme after releasing Chris Weinke last month. The Panthers have also shown interest in former Miami quarterback Joey Harrington.

The Panthers, who have been quiet during the free agency period, are about $9 million under the salary cap.

Benign is right. I won't go down the VY track, because that's done.

But a year after a huge extension to be searching for a backup job somewhere is crazy. I don't know if it's unprecedented, but it's certainly rare.

Hey DD. Not sure if you've heard the exciting news coming out of Sweden this morning. After decades of research by teams of over a dozen scientists a piece, an amazing discovery has been found. Really mind-blowing, breathtaking stuff. Read about it here:

Last night the NFL network was showing some film of a set of rookies from 2002. Mike Williams (the Bills OL fourth pick, 1st round..."Williams is considered by some to be the biggest bust of GM Tom Donahoe's tenure."), David Carr, Joey Harrington, Jeff Hatch (not in the league anymore, I don't think), Josh Robinson (not in the league) and Jeremy Shockey.

I know right. What new information did they find out about Carr this past season? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! He was the same QB he has been since day 1. Why the extension then? This just goes to show you how dumb the Texans management was; hopefully not anymore.

The Texans essentially gave a gigantic contract extension to a back QB. Dumbest personnel move EVER

In his opinion, too, evidently: I heard a soundbite of his on the radio saying they were poised for a "championship run" and "this is the year". Direct quotes. As much as I want the Texans to succeed, I must admit I laughed out loud. I hope they can finally win 8 or 9--I'd be very pleased with such progress. If they win 10 or 11 or make noise in the playoffs I believe all of Houston will be pleasantly stunned. Heck, even Kubiak and McNair.

In his defense, he could probably get a starting job on a crappy team if he wanted to. But there was an article last week saying he would rather be the backup on a good team, since he's already tried that 'starter on a crappy team' role...and it didn't end well.

Random side info (about another former Texan).

I have heard through the grapevine that Dom Capers is going to be a head coach again, as close to Houston as he could get. At a brand-new college program. My alma mater, Lamar, is (if you believe the rumors) about to announce the return of the football program for the 2009 season. (They've been working toward it for several years.) Apparently, Capers is the coach of choice, because he likes the area and has connections on the Board of Regents.

I feel bad for Carr.

The Texans remind of the Memphis Grizzlies or Atlanta Hawks or Golden State Warriors.

You think the players suck, but its the whole organization/team not the player.

Notice how Jason Terry, Boris Diaw 'suddenly' got drastically better once they were out of Atlanta. Same with Mike Bibby. Same with everybody at golden state, Sprewell, Webber, etc

Maybe Carr is way better outside the Texans.

It gets to me that they simply release him out of goodwill / pity. As if it wasn't enough that they gave him that freakin extension and signing bonus last year. Why couldn't they of held on to him for trade bait . .

because no one wanted him enough to make an attractive offer to the Texans. they wanted to trade him before bringing in Schaub...his name was rumored on the block for weeks. there were no takers.

now he's a backup against a relatively young QB who is just a season removed from being a Pro Bowler. in a place where he's not brought in to compete for a starting job at all.

no way a team takes on the kind of contract he had for that kind of player.

tinman, how about the Los Angeles Clippers? Their lone appearances in the playoffs were the only times they were good. We took them out, just like we'll take out the Panthers. AGAIN.

In five seasons with the Texans, he completed 1,243 of 2,070 passes for 13,391 yards, with 59 touchdown passes and 65 interceptions, and a passer rating of 75.3. But Carr was the most-sacked quarterback in the league during his tenure with the Texans. Playing behind one of the league's most porous offensive lines, he was sacked a remarkable 249 times. Funny. The Texans' management didn't think their offensive line was porous... they decided to get rid of Carr instead...

I really can't give a percentage. There is no way to accuratly do that. Lots of times the line just fell apart, but lots of times he held the ball too long, or failed to simply throw it away.

What does it matter, he is gone, the rest of the NFL had their chance at him and only backup positions were available, that speaks volumes to anything you or I could say.

John McLain reported after the 2005 season that the Texans believed that Carr was responsible for over 1/4 of the sacks.

The real problem to me wasn't that..but that he was making incredibly bad/stupid mistakes even when there wasn't pressure.

No no Swoly, I don't mind the discussion, I just think Carr has been beaten to death in the NFL, partly his fault, partly the lines.

And, I am truly frustrated that the team reached this conclusion one year too late.

But, I am happy that the Texan's finally made the call, released him, and got someone new in here to take the reigns.

Carr was a class act in Houston, but he never felt like a leader or a winner...he was too laid back for my taste.....

No, the Cleveland Browns game in 2004 started it all. That's when the honeymoon was officially over. That' why it was so frustrating for many of us to see them commit to DC for the long term.

Actually that wasn't triple-coverage vs. the Titans...it was quadruple coverage. One of the worst decisions I've ever seen by a QB in my life.

Carr signs two-year deal as backup with Panthers

By JOHN MCCLAIN
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle

After visiting Carolina and Seattle this week, former Texans quarterback David Carr has agreed to a contract with the Panthers to back up Jake Delhomme.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Carr’s deal is for two years.

Carr replaces Chris Weinke, who was released after a season in which he played poorly and was 1-2 as a starter after Delhomme suffered a thumb injury. The Panthers also brought in Joey Harrington for an interview before deciding on Carr.

The Texans play at Carolina this season. Although Carr will go to camp as the backup, because Delhomme was inconsistent last season and often under fire from fans and media, there already is speculation in Charlotte that Carr could push for a starting job.

Once the Texans decided to go in another direction from Carr, the first pick in franchise history and a five-year starter, they traded for Atlanta quarterback Matt Schaub.

Carr became an unrestricted free agent after he asked for and got his release from the Texans.

Carr started 75 games for the Texans and won 23 of them, including one in which he came off the bench to pull out a victory. He was sacked 249 times. Last season, his first and only season under coach Gary Kubiak, Carr completed a career-high 68.3 percent of his passes.

The Panthers believe Carr will play better when he gets an opportunity because they'll provide him with solid pass protection.

The truth is, while McNair was doing his best to be a nice guy, David was being a buttwipe. It would have helped McNair save a little face, to get a second day pick out of the deal.

If David felt half as grateful as he should($35mill is a lot of jack) he should have dealt with the Texans & worked out a trade.

I'm sure teams like the Dolphins, Carolina & Seattle offered a 6th, but they were going to need David to restructure. & David balked.

I'm sure teams like the Dolphins, Carolina & Seattle offered a 6th, but they were going to need David to restructure. & David balked.

That's quite an imagination.

I still think it's funny that #8 replaced #8. There are going to be so many modified Carr jerseys, the NFL will have to show it. :D
