I heard on the radio Burke is batting 6th and Morgan is batting 2nd
Its something that Garner utilized throughout the last 2 weeks of spring training... he wants a high OBP guy at the top of the lineup before Berkman/Lee, and this also has the dual effect of getting the streaky Ensberg some decent pitches to hit to start the year.
Ideally, I'd want Burke batting 1st, Ensberg 2nd, and Biggio 6th... but that gives Biggio less AB's, and also creates a black hole of Biggio-Everett-Ausmus-Pitcher.
Burke should be fine wherever he is... he needs to stop pressing, the job is his.

The "black hole" you mention still exists, except it is Everett-Ausmus-Pitcher-Biggio.
Ensberg batting second should eliminate one of my biggest pet peeves (although Garner does it less than Williams). If Biggio leads the game or inning off with a double, please, please, please do not sacrifice (unless it is the 7th inning or later of a tie game).

Well, the only solution to any possible black hole scenario is to not have Biggio playing everyday... but that's not going to happen (since the only places for him in this lineup are 1st or 6th). Also, I prefer Burke over Biggio in that scenario because he can be a table setter and steal bases towards the bottom of the lineup (and then we can sacrafice all we want with our inept hitters).
Also, I didn't mind the sacrafice as much by JW because of the pitching we had in 2004. He only used the tactic in the 1st inning, and you can probably find ample statistics showing the increased winning percentage when teams score first... but I agree that he probably shouldn't have been so stead-fast in that rule (but it did eliminate the black hole, by having Everett bat 2nd).

The solution is for Biggio to hit .280, Everett .260 and Ausmus .250. :)

Yes! Until Ensberg can prove he can hit again, the number 2 spot is a great place for him. I'd prefer Burke at leadoff, but this lineup ain't half bad.
Raven Lunatic

I refuse to think of Biggio as being any sort of contributor to an offensive "black hole" in the lineup.

You ought to play MVP Baseball 2005 with the 2007 Mod. New uniforms, updated rosters, stadiums and schedule. Not to metion all MLB stadiums with real signage (Beer signs, etc...not fake EA crap).

Heard this was the opening lineup tonight ...
Biggio
Everett
Berkman
Lee
Ensberg
Scott
Burke
Ausmus
Oswalt
I actually like putting Everett in the 2 hole as it allows Burke to be in a position to get up to bat with more runners on base. Just have to hope that Bidge or Everett can get something going ahead of Lance. Could be big trouble if Lance is always coming up with no one on. I think it's a risk worth taking however.

I just don't see Everett as a viable option in the 2 hole, and nothing I've heard from Garner suggested he was going to do that; it was either the lineup we had last year or Ensberg in the 2 hole with Burke 6th. It just doesn't make sense to put in one of your weakest hitters right in front of your best hitters. I liked the Ensberg idea though, cause even if he's struggling w/ the bat he'll still take walks, which is of benefit to Berkman; what's not is coming up to the plate with 2 outs and none on.

Yeah I agree Everett is the worst hitter of the bunch, but some of his skills that he does have such as the ability to bunt could at least be utilized in the 2 hole.

That can't be right. I had that problem when I was on business travel in New Mexico last year, and the MLB.TV customer support guy said it messes up sometimes. He gave me some token to put on my computer that corrected the problem. I'd give them a call if I were you.

True. And I think it may have something to do with splitting Everett and Ausmus up so the bottom of the lineup isn't SOOOO weak.

This is what I've been saying all along. He needs to prove that he can pitch reliably for a good month or so before he can be our closer again. Instead we keep throwing to the wolves with no success.

I wouldn't doubt that...Garner can be stubborn to a fault sometimes; but if this teams wants another postseason appearance, they cannot afford a struggling Lidge in the closer's role for a long duration...aside from the risk of blowing games, what kind of impact would that have on the team's morale, especially the starting pitching. Keeping him in that role wouldn't be fair to either parties.

The team is not gonna get anything of value for Lidge; we've already seen that this offseason.
And Garner saying in press conference he believes Lidge will get it done is just to give him a vote of confidence. He's not gonna publicly give Lidge an ultimatum after the first game of the season. But I'm betting and hoping that things are churning in his head and a plan B is in place should LIdge continue to struggle. But he's not gonna come out and bash Lidge; he'll keep praising him until he yanks him.

I can understand Garner not pulling the plug one game into the season, but I do wonder what it's going to take for Lidge to actually lose his job. He sucked for an entire season. A season during which the 'Stros twice said they were going to "closer by commitee". They never really did. Lidge gets lit up all spring and blows the first game of the season. I'd like to believe that if Lidges stays this way they'll remove him from the closers' role, but with Gar and Pup I don't know if that will actually ever happen. :(

I agree with you here. I said before the season that I didn't take Garner serious as a manager because he threw him out there in the closers role when he hasn't done anything in over a year. HOWEVER, I would take Garner even less seriously if he took Lidge out now. He made him the closer and I think he ought to give him a couple weeks and re-evaluate, but I'm guessing he is going to get at least a month or two with how stubborn Garner is.

Say what you want about Lidge, but I think this one falls at the feet of Garner. What kind of lineup has Biggio & Everett batting at the top? Their combined OBP last year was under 0.300. Meanwhile, you have Ensberg, who nearly had a 0.400 OBP in 2006 despite batting in the 0.230s, and Burke (0.350 OPB - good, but not great) batting down in the order.
The icing on the cake was when he decided to let Ausmus bat for himself in the 10th inning, even though he had Lamb still available. You can argue that Tracy would have gone with the lefty, but I still like my chances better with Lamb than Ausmus.
One thing's for sure - it didn't take long for the crowd's pity ovation for Lidge during player introductions to turn into raucous boos.

Or Biggio leading off? Given their respective OBP last seasons, its almost critical to start the game with the 1st 2 hitters getting on base 30% of the time. Not to mention that it wastes Biggio's remaining value at the plate, which is his power. They'll make alot more use of it if they bat him 6th.

Yeah I don't mind him in the 2 hole at all. He even hit a double last night so he definitely was not the reason we lost.
he also saved at least 1 run in the 9th on that catch in shallow left over his shoulder.

Everett didn't hurt the Stros this game batting second, but don't think he's a good fit there. I would prefer he bat 8 so the pitcher could sacrifice him to 2nd. He's more likely to score from 2nd on a single than Ausmus.
