Clutch,

What's the significance of one's IP #?

I see that our IP #s are not displayed on this BBS, but on others they are. I was just wondering, because ej88 was emailing me, and telling me his theory on IP #s, and their link to the government. jk http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/wink.gif

IP addresses are important because they tell someone exactly which physical computer posted the message.

If there was ever a serious problem, the admin could trace the address to see where it came from. Once the ISP was determined, they could, if necessary, find out who sent the message and turn the information over to the proper authorities.

Other boards publish the IP addresses for EVERYONE to see.

i'm not sure of the significance of hiding them from the masses. It would help weed out the imposters, spammers and jerks who come on the board.

I was just wondering, because I don't remember them being on our posts before. But, now they are there, albeit only admins can view them. Just wondering...

Yesterday I put up the announcement (on the top left of every forum) called <a href="http://www.clutchcity.net/ubb-cgi/ubbmisc.cgi?action=getannounce&ForumNumber=5&Start=2451404.99&End=2451407&Session=2451405.1156">"Just a reminder"</a> that explains the "IP Logged" message.
