View Full Version : Where do you find good music?

I used to watch 120 Minutes on MTV in middle school/high school. I used to have a semi Matt Pinfield-like knowledge of music. I used to listen to bands like Sebadoh. I used to major in indie rock and minor in dance music and hip-hop. But now I listen to drum & bass (aka jungle) most of the time. I'd like to listen to other stuff, but I don't know where to go to hear any good indie rock or hip-hop now. Threads here like 'Recommend a band' brought up some good stuff that I would have no idea how to find. I hate the local radio, MTV/BET/VH1 suck. There's no good local college/high school radio stations. I don't have satellite radio.

SO! Can anyone share where they go to find/listen to music online? I personally find the indie-rock w/ a dance groove stuff good (someone's recommendation of Whitest Boy Alive for example, Rapture, etc), but I'm open to anything . And I'm looking for hip-hop stuff along the line of groups like Blackilicious. But maybe others here w/ interests totally opposite from me could also use some recommendations. So hopefully some people here could share the wealth.

I'll get the ball rolling on some drum & bass (aka jungle), for maybe the one person out there who has even heard of the genre:

Hospital Records podcast, which you can search for on iTunes - Hospital Records releases and more melodic drum & bass
Fabio & Grooverider (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/fabioandgrooverider/index.shtml) radio show on BBC Radio 1. You will hear any new song debut here first, long before they even get an official release.
Drum & Bass Arena (http://www.breakbeat.co.uk/) - clips of singles, albums, videos, live shows
Dogs on Acid (http://www.dogsonacid.com/audio/) - clips of singles, albums

If you want to find music similar to what you already listen to you can try http://www.pandora.com/, basically enter a song or artist that you like and it plays similar stuff.

I read probably 75 different music blogs and listen to a lot of music podcasts. Most of what I listen to is different from what you are looking for, but they all service different genres of music and there are TONS for indie, electronica, etc.

Besides that, I use Finetune.com, Pandora.com and I browse iTunes a lot.

NPR Radio on 88.7 during the middle of the day. That is the BEST music. No one talks over the songs, no annoying commercials, no annoying DJs, they tell you who the writer and who the singer is of each song, if any. You will become smarter as you listen.

I've got it too, and I was in the audience for that one. I wish they would have continued doing the Juneteenth Blues Festival. It was awesome back in the day.

If you like indie, check out pitchfork.media.com (the bane of the existence of one DanHiggs' Beard).

I don't buy the CDs like I used to (lifestyle change), but when I do buy something, I usually go by reviews off allmusic or artists that I already like that are "similar" to such and such artist.

If you like indie, check out pitchfork.media.com

I was going to suggest this as well (oh wait I am) -- they have lots of free and legal downloads to sample new bands.

There are a few different ways you can do it. Take one band you like now, and plug it into Myspace music search. Choose those bands their, and see who their influcences and friends are, and check out those sites. It is an ever widening ripple which will end up giving you a lot of bands to explore.

There are a couple of different shows that I listen to in LA on Indy 103.1 FM. Some of their stuff isn't exactly what you are looking for, and some of it is barely Indy. But more than any other non-college station it does a good job. Check out Headtrip, Passport Approved, and occasionally Feel My Heat. You can listen to them online as well as just check out set lists to find bands to investigate.

The most recent show had nothing to do with dnb though, but other shows of theirs have.

Also MTV2's show Subterranean might be a good place to see and sample. They may have one or two songs a show that would be close to what you are looking for.

Also from Myspace you can find a podcast with one band you like on it, subscribe to it, and see what the other bands are like, and then search out those bands, and keep following the links.

There are many ways to go about finding favorite new music. I'm kinda old school, so will still buy on the recomendation of a critic in a music magazine. One of my fondest momentos is of an old post card received from Lester Bangs (I was 14 and had written him for recos based on his Mott the Hoople 'Mott' review in Cream). He suggested VU's White Light White Heat, Stooges 'Raw Power' MC5 'Back in the USA' among others. Lester is long dead as is Cream. Still, there are good mags with some solid writers. 'Mojo' out of England is excellent. The last two issues have included cd's picked to celebharate Brian Wilson and Joy Division. Truly a great source to discover old and new bands that are inspired by artist I already love. 'Under the Radar' and 'Pitchfork, are two other excellent rags for great new music.

I also like Amazon.com's buyers lists. There are always readers favorites lists associated with the CD you are considering. Some of them suck, but many others are solid. Pick one you think you might like and then play the sample. I've discovered some good stuff this way. Gene Clarke's "No Other" and The Del Gados "Hate" come to mind.

Finally, create your own radio station based on your musical preferences at Yahoo.com It's free, all you have to do is register and follow the MY Station instructions. Once you are a member, you can access the positively best source for music at my station (I call it Radio WIN ;) ) http://music.yahoo.com/launchcast/station.asp?u=1812813296 I've been working on it a couple years now and discover more unheard good stuff here than anywhere. I am somewhat biased :)

Amazing, thanks. Is there a way to keep up with all of those? Isnt there like a RSS feeder thing or something, think thats what they're called. Not sure how those work, could someone explain?

EDIT: Found an extension for Firefox, called Sage. On some of those blogs, I cant get the link to add to sage, I click on their RSS Feeder button thing and it either gives me a bunch of coding stuff or just cant add. Anyone know how to get around that. Is there a good RSS Feeder program I can get that will handle all? Like I am fuel, you are friends, cant seem to figure out how to get that in sage...

I go to www.metacritic.com and look at reviews. They compile reviews from a wider range of sources like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Blender, etc. so you can find what source you respect and see what they have to say. They update new albums with reviews pretty fast.

I have reached a point where I'm in my music "comfort zone". I don't find barely any modern music that I like.

And, honestly, I'm quite happy listening to the same music. :)

I find out about a lot of bands on a Radiohead Message Board

Also, go to amazon and type in an album by a band you like and they recommend other bands that sound similar

Are you running Firefox 2?

Sage is good... you might want to try an online reader like Bloglines or Google Reader. The cool thing about both is that they have subscription bookmarklets that you can then use as a mini-search so you'll get exactly the feed needed for your reader.
