View Full Version : Washington's Basketball Team: What is the better name?

In this day of extreme political correctness, the owner of the Washington NBA Team changed its name to the Wizards because Bullets were politically incorrect and a friend of his died because of a bullet.
My argument is that people kill people. Wizards are known to kill people too with their spells. So what was the better name/logo etc?

people drown in lakes every year, you never see the Lakers change their name.

Not to mention that the name has nothing to do whatsoever with Los Angeles.

People die of heat stroke, but Miami won't cave in to pressure. :)
I still don't know why the Bullets were worried about political correctness when that NFL in their city had a much more offensive name.

But clearly the Washington Wizards are good wizards and members of the Order of the Phoenix! Not bad wizards doing the bidding of Lord Voldemort!
Rockets are much more destructive than Bullets.

Instead of totally going away from objects that can kill, they could have went with the Washington Tazers

How many years late is this thread?
But yeah, The Bullets was a much better nickname than the Wizards. I don't like nicknames that seem like they came out of a focus group like Wizards or Titans.

what is the story behind "wizards" at the time it seemed random, and maybe it still is
also, jazz? they should have changed that name a long time ago

In 1995, owner Abe Pollin announced that the franchise was to be renamed because Washington Bullets carried violent overtones. A contest was held to choose a new name and the choices were narrowed to the Dragons, Express, Stallions, Sea Dogs, or Wizards.[1] On May 15, 1997, the Bullets officially became the Washington Wizards. The change generated some controversy because Wizard is a rank in the Ku Klux Klan.[1] A new logo was unveiled and the team colors were changed from the traditional red, white and blue to blue, black and bronze, the same colors as the Washington Capitals, a hockey team also owned by Pollin. That same year the Wizards moved to the then MCI Center, now called Verizon Center. The Verizon Center is also home to the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League, the Washington Mystics of the WNBA and Georgetown Hoyas men's college basketball team.
In 1998, they became the brother team to the Women's National Basketball Association's Washington Mystics.

which makes about as much sense as the utah jazz...
they should be the utah mountaineers or mormons, and let nola become the jazz again... whenever they move back.

The real poll should be whether or not Detroit Gems or Minneapolis Lakers was a better name for the franchise.
I say those Nancies deserved to still be called the Gems.

They should have gone for a more representative name:
Washington Pork Barrels
Washington Earmarks
Washington Vetoes
Washington Gridlock
Washington Lobbyists
They could have even changed the name of their "home"
DC Neocons
