...is an awful commentator.
This is the first game of the season that I'm watching Clyde commentate because I'm a Red Rowdy (couldn't make the game because of final exams). My gosh how did this man get the job? He said something really stupid like "Kobe Bryant has been a great player the last few years," and "John Farmar has a great career ahead of him". My favorite was when Novak went out and stepped back in, but the refs said that was illegal, so they looked at the replay and it was obvious that he was clearly back within the lines, and Clyde was like "right call by the refs" and Worrell said "HE WAS IN! THAT'S THE WRONG CALL!" so Clyde responded "Well, they don't have the instant replay, so good call."
LOL haha.
Amazing, I was just telling my wife this guy is the worst commentator I've ever heard. He is terrible. He adds absolutely nothing to the broadcast. There is nothing he adds to the show besides stating what a 10 year old could or would say. Get rid of this guy. Awesome player, HORRIBLE commentator.

It's like he wakes up 30 mins before tipoff and takes his time to get to the arena. I won't be surprised if he has no idea who we play until he sees players warming up on the other team. You can tell he doesn't prepare whatsoever. And he doesn't analyze! JVG is by far the best rocket analyst. Jon Barry comes in a close 2nd.

He's somewhat more entertaining than Bull.
But I really want Calvin back. He was the only reason I started watching the Rockets, no joke!

yeah thats always a good one. so is OHhhhhhhhh when somebody dunks. poor clyde. its not in his nature to get "crunk" over a spectacular play so his effort comes off to be rather fake.
i love the "night in and night out"

WTF???

Bullard occasionally says something funny, but usually he comes off as corny.
He is infinitely better with the telestrator.

I will only say that he lied to my fathers face as he shook his hand and then he retracted a gentelmans agreement after my father made his coaching look bad at UH.......great player though......but......enough said.

I never understood Clyde. They talk about a lack of passion and emotion in Yao but Clyde Drexler takes that to another level.
I'm befuddled as to how a guy so mellow could be such a dominating player. And he wasn't just a finesse player like another mellow guy in Tim Duncan. He threw it down with the best of them and in my opinion is one of the most underrated dunkers in NBA history.
But yes, he's a terrible commentator. I just hate how he literally repeats, WORD FOR WORD, what Bill says sometimes. And when he talks you can tell that he's rely trying to add some emotion and passion to the dialogue but he's just so incapable of doing that, that whatever he says comes off as fake and ridiculous sounding.

I like when Bill said Clyde knows the coaching side of the game. He sure was a horrible coach at UH.

i thought clyde would bring more bball intelligence to the commentary but bill worrell seems smarter. matt bullard is decent. his "stop it right there" video hilights are the best.

clyde's problem is he didn't work his way up... its going to take time.
Tired excuse.
At this rate.. It'll take atleast 10 years before he comes atleast halfway decent.
Got 10 years of patience to waste on monotonous Clyde "the deaf/dumb/ and blind" Drexler? I'm sure Clyde doesn't have the 10 year interest in this.
The guy shows no signs that he even bothers to prepare. No analysis. No clue on the telestrater. Provides no Color/humor. Spouting broadcasting cliches (and at completely inappropriate times. such as the "nothing but net" and "Good call" sampled in this thread) that you and I are more than capable of doing and make one wonder if he even is watching the game. Just an emotionless echo, that likes to do a cookie monster impression and laugh like Dr. hibbert. Which, is something that any 10 year old is capable of offering to the same job.
So yes, it's a tired subject.. as your response is a tired excuse.
He just has to go.

Love Clyde as a player!! Annoyed at him as a commentator.
Bullard on the other had I think does a very decent job. Adds some occasional comments that indicate he knows the x's and o's of the game and does very well on the bullastrater.
Barry does great as well. I'm for dropping Clyde next season (assume he has a contract until then) and adding Bull or Barry in his place.

I would love Calvin back as much as anyone. That being said, anything is an improvement from Clyde, so can we at least replace him with Mario Elie? I've really enjoyed his pre-game show, and I think he'd be much more palatable than Clyde. (Although I would miss Clyde's Mutombo voice.)

The Rockets obsession with bringing in franchise 'names' to work the broadcasts, while understandable, has been poorly executed. It's plain that there's no auditions and no qualifications needed.
Cynthia Cooper - disaster
Clyde Drexler - bad at best
Mario Elie (studio) - so-so
Matt Bullard (minor name) was rock solid and so was Jon Barry. Listen learned: go with former Rockets for name recognition, but make them prove they can do the job! To this day, no one's come close to Calvin.
Clyde's been our personal Isiah: he's been awful in every post-retirement move he's gone with: UH Coach, couldn't convince Portland to hire him in any capacity, got a charity job from Kiki in Denver that didn't last, etc.
Sad.
Evan
Bring in Van Chancellor. At least he offered some insight, along with the comedy of his accent. It would've been great listening to him, Yao, and Dikembe in a post-game interview.

I second that.
for me, Van Chancellor is much more entertaining than Murph. CHancellor did great analysis, and like you said, offered a great insight.
that's not mentioning the great accent :D
"traIcE MiGradE is veery aggresseev" I dont quite know how to write it but omg, it sounds hilarious :D

He's actually OK. He gives the Hall of Famer perspective on things. Many of the players he played against are still playing. This isn't radio. You don't need a commentator to paint a picture.
Of course everyone in here didn't like Van Chancellor but if you focused on the content of what he was saying, it was pretty good. Enthusiasm is also attractive to the average viewer and he had that too.
Coming back to Clyde...he has improved and anyone can make a mistake or two, so pointing those out doesn't paint the whole picture.
He's actually OK. He gives the Hall of Famer perspective on things. Many of the players he played against are still playing. This isn't radio. You don't need a commentator to paint a picture.
Which is precisely why you need a commentator that can tell you more than what's already blatantly obvious to the viewer and already pointed out by the game announcer and the play by play guy.
Of course everyone in here didn't like Van Chancellor but if you focused on the content of what he was saying, it was pretty good. Enthusiasm is also attractive to the average viewer and he had that too.
Van Chancellor improved greatly throughout one year. His accent be it annoying to some and funny to others was his only debatable flaw as a commentator. However, the analysis and insight he provided came second to only Calvin. And, had a lot more natural enthusiasm than Clyde makes effort to project.
Coming back to Clyde...he has improved and anyone can make a mistake or two, so pointing those out doesn't paint the whole picture.
It's not mistakes he's making, it's sense and analysis he's NOT making. Hall of Famer perspective? His best attributes as a commentator include : Cookie monster sound effects, Dr. Hibbert giggle and pointing at replays while saying "See, here's this guy, consumate professional and there he goes. Nothing but Net" or, "Good call" and literally echoing Bill Worrell's thoughts though apparently in a dumbed down version for the 'average viewer'.
I won't be surprised if one of these days Worrell turns to Clyde asking for his opinion and thoughts on in game action, and Clyde just cuts out the middle man alltogether, "What you said, Bill! Uh hee hee hee hee."

Clyde may be bad - but he's a Rocket. I mean, who cares. I like Clyde - I might think 85% of the stuff he says is B.S....but whatever, i'm watching the game, not listening to commentary.
