Foronda yearns for the private life
Anchor resigns to pursue interests outside of television
By MIKE MCDANIEL
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle
Lisa Foronda, a Channel 11 news anchor since 1997, will leave her post on Dec. 22 to pursue other, undeclared activities.
"I'm finished with TV news," she said Monday. "I really want to do something else with my life, something not in the public eye."
She said her decision had nothing to do with her colleagues or superiors, only with the nature of the job itself.
"The rewards I got out of this were really outside of the TV part of it," she said. "I got to meet some wonderful people who cared about animals, running, their kids, literacy, AIDS. I would like to be able to work more closely with people I can see (rather) than working and looking into a camera every day."
The decision also had nothing to do with money or contract issues. She has "several years" remaining on her contract and "you could give me millions, and I wouldn't stay," she said.
Foronda is known to be a runner and an animal enthusiast but said she has "no idea" what she might do next, only that she will remain in Houston, and "I can guarantee 1,000 percent it will never be in television news again."
"I want to be a private person," she said. "I always wanted to be a private person, and this job goes against every fiber of that."
She pursued a career as a broadcast journalist to be a reporter, she said, and when the opportunity arose to become an anchor, "I went ahead and said yes. But I wouldn't do it over again if I had the opportunity."
Foronda, a 1991 graduate of the University of Florida, began her broadcast career at CBS stations in San Angelo and Fort Myers, Fla. She came to KHOU from the CBS affiliate in Tampa, Fla.
She's been contemplating her exit for at least a year and told management about her desires in October.
"When she first told me about it, knowing Lisa, it didn't surprise me that much," said Greg Hurst, Foronda's longtime anchor partner. "The good thing is she's not leaving Houston, so the friendship will continue."
Peter Diaz, president and general manager of KHOU, said Monday that he encouraged her to stay, "but at the end of the day, you have to respect when people want to do something different."
He and news director Keith Connors will search inside and outside the station for a replacement.
In the interim, Hurst will co-anchor the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. news with Len Cannon, who left an anchor post with the Fox station in New York City to join KHOU in April.
The Foronda replacement will not come from Channel 11's morning team, Diaz said.
"Our mornings are just as important as our evenings," he said. "Our plan is to leave that team alone."

She wasn't bad when she started. I saw her in person on the Astrodome field when the Astros clinched the division in 1997. She was very bitchy, but it turned out later that all the drunks behind her on the telecast were grabbing her ass. Wish I would have thought of it at the time. :D

Don't worry guys, Jessica Willy is still at ABC 13!
Go home set your DVR's, turn off the lights and cuddle up with you lotion and tissues and thank your lucky stars that other women are still on local tv.

She probably just wants a normal job with normal 9-5 hours so she can have a real life. TV hours suck for pretty much everybody in Television. It's hard to have a family and actually be around your family much with those hours. If she's a nighttime anchor (I've lived in DFW for the last 8yrs -so I don't know of her) Then she probably goes to work around 2pm and gets off at about 11pm. If she has kids or a husband, then the only time she would see them is in the morning and on weekends. During special events...forget it...she's probably never at home. That being said...Houston is the #11 TV/Radio Market in the country. To get an anchor job at a place this big is quite an achievement. I'm a bit suprised to see anyone give up their career after making it this far.

Move from the spotlight was easy for Lisa Foronda
The former Channel 11 anchor is looking forward to a less-public life
By CLIFFORD PUGH
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle
Though casually dressed in Gap jeans, a University of Florida T-shirt and only a touch of makeup, Lisa Foronda still turns heads when she walks into a restaurant.
"Aren't you a movie star?" one man asks after spotting her at Cafe Express on West Gray. No, she patiently explains. She used to co-anchor the Channel 11 news, but she recently quit to try something new.
In the ego-driven world of TV news, abandoning the spotlight while still in your prime rarely happens. So it was a shock when the 37-year-old newscaster walked away from her high-profile job last month.
She has heard many of the rumors over the abrupt end to her broadcasting career, including a rift with management (false), an affair with a co-worker (false) and a change in sexual orientation (false). "The most outrageous (rumor) is that I'm a kept woman and that my sugar daddy doesn't want me working," she said with a laugh.
She has a boyfriend close to her age, but even if he were richer than Bill Gates, which he isn't, she would never depend on a man for financial survival.
"I've never had a man take care of me and I don't ever want one to take care of me," she said. "Everything I've bought, I've done on my own. My mama taught me to save."
She maintains the real story of her departure is not nearly as sexy: She was simply tired of the spotlight and craved a life out of the public eye.
"It's a career change. People do it all the time," she explained. "I just happen to be doing it in front of a bunch of people."
A 1991 University of Florida graduate with a degree in telecommunication, she worked as a weekend anchor and reporter in San Angelo, Fort Myers and Tampa, before moving to Houston in 1997 as a "secondary anchor" for the KHOU noon and 6 p.m. broadcasts.
She says she had no aspirations for the top job, but after anchor Marlene McClinton unexpectedly quit on the air at the end of a late afternoon newscast in 1999, Foronda received an "instant promotion" when the news director called her in and said, "You're doing the 10 o'clock news."
Foronda admits she was woefully inexperienced and credits co-anchor Greg Hurst, a veteran newscaster, for teaching her the ropes. "The key to doing this job is preparation," Hurst said. "Lisa learned that well."
At first detractors sniffed that the attractive duo resembled Ken and Barbie. But they won over audiences with an easygoing camaraderie and an emphasis on news over happy talk. When their newscasts jumped to the top of the ratings, the Houston Press credited the "Foronda factor."
Although she appeared unruffled on the air, she said she was never comfortable in the job. She describes herself as an introvert in a job that demands attention.
"You get sick of working holidays and being on call, but what really grinded on me was that everybody knows your business," she said. "I just got tired of belonging to everybody."
While the pay is good — a top anchor in the Houston market can make $250,000 or more, according to industry sources — anchors are rarely home on weeknights; weekends are filled with personal appearances. Such hours are tough on relationships. Foronda has been divorced twice, most recently this past February, although she doesn't blame her job for her breakups.
Her advancing age in a medium that craves youth also figured into her deliberations. In the Houston TV market, like many others, female anchors are often pushed out as they get older while male anchors continue until they collect Social Security or die — whichever comes first.
"I figured I had about eight more years, until I turned 45," Foronda said, "But I didn't want to be at the point where I was about to get the boot."
Known as the "news babe" on some Internet chat lines, the constant focus on her appearance grated on her.
"I don't want to be criticized for the fact that my hair is out of place or someone didn't like my hair color or, God forbid, I touched (sports anchor) Giff Nielsen on the arm during a newscast," she said, referring to criticism she has received from viewers.
She realizes that much of the attention is well-intentioned. "I can understand it. People get familiar with you (from watching TV) and they think they know you. I never was quite able to reconcile that. You become a celebrity on such a minor scale. It's so dumb how we idolize people."
About a year ago, she started planning an "exit strategy," with a goal of changing jobs by the beginning of 2007. She consulted with a good friend, Vern Swisher, the CEO of Career and Recovery Resources. They discussed ways she could aim for a job that would make good use of her television skills and her desire to help the community.
She came up with a plan to stash away at least three months of savings to tide her over if her job hunt stalled. Then she compiled a list of her skills, set career goals, updated her résumé and discreetly began networking to see what jobs were out there.
Last week, she began a job as senior community relations program manager at CenterPoint Energy, where she will serve as a liaison between the corporation and the community in a variety of ways.
Her new job requires a public presence in the Houston community, but "it won't be the Lisa Foronda show," she said. "It's the CenterPoint Energy show and I'm helping out."
She figures it could be several years before Houstonians forget her television celebrity status. She will honor a previous commitment to emcee a charity luncheon, but vows to keep a low profile after that.
Instead she's looking forward to volunteering with animal rescue groups (she is an avid pet lover), running marathons and spending nights at home with her boyfriend and her two dogs, whom she refers to as "my kids."
Foronda's decision is unusual in two respects, said Beth Olson, director of the University of Houston School of Journalism.
While national surveys show that a sizable number of women in television leave the profession, often to spend more time with their family, it doesn't happen often in major markets, where the stakes are higher.
And those who do leave usually aren't as up front as Foronda, Olson said.
"What's uncommon is she stated her desire to get out of the public eye. Other people have walked away. They just aren't that honest about it because it's a contradiction to the job. The one thing anchors strive for is that public recognition."
Foronda remains loyal to Channel 11 and can't wait to see "who they replace me with," she said.
"If I ever worked in TV news again, I would go back there. Of course, that's about as likely as an ice cube staying frozen in hell. Once I've made a decision, I don't go back on it."
Hmmm.
She eats at the Cafe Express on West Gray.
Noted.

Jobless or not, she's still hawt...mmmm...I need to go try the Cafe Express next time I'm in town...
I can be her sugar daddy...
I know this has gotten off the top of Lisa Foronda, but one thing I'll say about her is that she is a tireless supporter of animal causes. I've spoken to her via email a number of times about the Animal Attraction blog she started at KHOU and she helped out a lot with publicizing the plight of local animals and shelters.
I also know - from experience with friends in that business - that broadcast media is a TOUGH world. If she is as private as she says, it must've been a nightmare to go to work every day.

Me and her both failed it initially, or a section of it and had to take a review course for it and thats when i got close to her.
Never did get it on an intimate level, thats where lorena sanchez entered my heart( sidenote, i have a thing for hispanic ladies but i can't stomach any latino foods, its such a painful thing).

Though casually dressed in Gap jeans, a University of Florida T-shirt and only a touch of makeup, Lisa Foronda still turns heads when she walks into a restaurant.
A 1991 University of Florida graduate with a degree in telecommunication, she worked as a weekend anchor and reporter in San Angelo, Fort Myers and Tampa, before moving to Houston in 1997 as a "secondary anchor" for the KHOU noon and 6 p.m. broadcasts.
Woot! University of Florida graduate! Further proof there was never a shortness of hot girls on campus. Sometimes I had to use that as my only motivation to get to class.

"I don't want to be criticized for the fact that my hair is out of place or someone didn't like my hair color or, God forbid, I touched (sports anchor) Giff Nielsen on the arm during a newscast," she said, referring to criticism she has received from viewers."
They KNOW their looks is part what gets them in. and they know what the news industry has in store. Why complain about it later? Its like Vince Carter getting bothered being known as a guy with great leaping ability and wanting to focus on other things. Puh-lease.

I never understood the fascination with Lisa Foronda. Jan Jeffcoat is about 30 times hotter.
i'm surprised it took 3 pages for someone to mention Jan Jeffcoat. homegirl is easily the hottest network anchor, and has a great... umm... voice.
i'm not gonna post the picture i found b/c it doesn't do her justice. just watch for her in the early morning.

Having a degree in broadcast journalism, I can definitely understand where she is coming from.
You work odd hours, don't really get holidays, and it's hard to make time for a husband/wife and kids. The marriage/divorce rates for journalists are up there with actors/actresses because it puts a huge strain on things at home. Also, it's a fun profession, but it's also incredibly hard to get to the point she got to.
My senior year of college, my broadcast professor told us how to get a job. Basically you make a resume tape, then drive all over texas or whatever state you wish you work in seeing if stations got/watched your tape, and if not, you drop off an extra copy/get your name out there. All that for a job that pays starting out 15-20,000 dollars a year.
I can easily understand why she walked away.

With so much killing and suffering in the world it is nice to wake up to Tonia's beautiful smile and heavenly brown eyes. Her enthusiam and gentle voice makes even the worst news seem not so bad. Watching Tonia in the morning beats a cup of Java anyday. The deeper I look into your biography and career and more I fascinated I have become with you. Enjoy your new career assignment with WBTV. Who knows maybe our paths may cross again. Till then I will always be your biggest fan.

Channel 11 names Lucy Noland evening co-anchor
By MIKE McDANIEL
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle
Lucy Noland, a Saigon native and single mother of three, will become co-anchor of Channel 11's 5 and 10 p.m. news beginning Monday. She replaces Lisa Foronda, who announced in December that she was leaving the station.
Nolan said the beauty of the city, the warmness of the people and the sizable Vietnamese population figured in her leaving her job as co-anchor of the morning show at the Fox affiliate in New York City,
Going from the No. 1 to the No. 10 market is notan unprecedented move. Channel 11 anchor Greg Hurst came here from New York.
"It's time for me to put down roots, to have a house and home," Noland said. "This nomadic lifestyle has been fun. It's taken me far and wide, and it's provided me the depth of knowledge to know a good thing when I see it. Houston's it."
Before New York, Noland worked at stations in Detroit; Fresno, Calif., and Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska. She is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association.

Jan Jeffcoat leaving Channel 26 anchor post
By MIKE McDANIEL
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle
Channel 26 morning anchor Jan Jeffcoat has taken a job with Fox's Chicago affiliate, WFLD. Her last day at KRIV is June 8.
Jeffcoat came here in November 2004, moving from WBTV in Charlotte, N.C. She will jump from the nation's 10th to the third largest market. She starts as WFLD morning anchor June 25.
Ratings rose during her anchor run here, and Channel 26 vice president and general manager D'Artagnan Bebel assured that an intensive search for her replacement is under way.
Meanwhile, Channel 11 attempted to shoot down rumors that Whitney Casey, anchor of KHOU/CBS' 9 a.m. magazine show, was seeking to get out of her contract.
Station officials said Thursday that Casey is still under a contract that has "considerable time remaining."
Great Day Houston was No. 2 in its time period, according to May ratings.

Lucy Noland pulls up the anchor chair
By ANDREW GUY JR.
Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle
Here's a task: Replace a popular TV news anchor.
And, while you're at it, start a new job in a new city, buy a house, learn every nook of the new metropolis, find a groove with your new co-workers and make sure your three kids are adjusting to it all, because — don't forget — you are a single parent and have to run home and cook dinner for them every night before rushing back to anchor the late news.
"It's been a whirlwind," Lucy Noland says in her tiny office at KHOU Channel 11. "The airline lost my luggage, and I had no clothes the day before I was supposed to start. I've pretty much been thrown into everything."
She arrived in mid-April, the same week as the Virginia Tech massacre and the shooting at Johnson Space Center. This forced her to focus: She had to scurry to buy new clothes, learn as much as she could about Houston and jump on the air.
Noland came from WNYW in New York City, where she co-anchored that station's morning show, Good Day New York Wake Up. In Houston she has the dicey task of replacing the popular Lisa Foronda, who left Channel 11 in December after eight years.
On a recent afternoon, she scrolls through e-mails forwarded to her from KHOU's public relations department. She opens one e-mail with the subject line "Where's Lisa?" and finds a short note inside: "I know she's not Lisa, but she's a great replacement."
Noland smiles and says: "That was sweet."
"I know it's hard to replace another anchor," she says. "But I'm not necessarily trying to step into Lisa's shoes. Lisa was here a long time, and people are surely going to miss her. I understand how a lot of them feel."
She is hoping to win viewers with her personality and command of the news. But she's also crossing her fingers that they connect with her as a divorced mom raising three kids — Gaibel, 15; Christian, 14; and Bay, 6.
Noland won't give her age. But she does share that she was born in Vietnam. Her father was an American who worked for the CIA. He was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Saigon. He met her mother, and the two married. They had three kids, Lucy being the middle child and the only girl. Her dad quit the CIA, and the family moved to Oregon a year after Noland was born.
"We lived in this federal housing project that had a great vibe," Noland recalls. "Everyone was always so cool. Because of my frugal upbringing, I still appreciate the smaller things in life. My parents taught me our culture was important. I was always so proud to be Vietnamese."
Her parents taught her philosophy and religion and stressed the need for an education. They also pushed her to be curious about the world and to ask questions. She watched the news with her parents, developing a crush on late ABC anchor Peter Jennings.
When it came time to think about a career, Noland was hooked on the news business.
After college at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, she worked at stations in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska; Fresno, Calif.; Detroit; and New York.
In New York, she garnered a reputation for being a bright, witty morning co-anchor, said New York Daily News media critic Richard Huff.
And on many blogs and Web sites, she was often referred to as one of the most attractive news personalities in New York City.
Noland laughs about and shrugs off such labels. She said she tries to keep a sense of humor about everything. When two of her colleagues at WNYW asked her to appear briefly on their morning show (which followed hers), she agreed. When she walked onto the set, a female co-anchor said, "You're looking boobylicious."
Noland said she was caught off guard, but laughed, stood up and struck a pose.
It was a brief moment, but in this age of the Internet, it was one that didn't disappear. The video clip made its way around the country and until recently could be seen on YouTube.
"Their show is a little more irreverent," she says. "It's the last thing I want to be known for."
Still, in the TV news business, image is important. She successfully got Wikipedia to delete information in her entry that accused her of uttering an expletive on the air. "The fact of the matter is, they're out there with trivial things like birthdays, but they're also out there with things that could be slanderous and libelous," she says of public message boards and Web sites.
Keith Connors, KHOU's executive news director, said they considered hundreds of candidates to replace Foronda, including some from within the station.
Her audition was impressive, he says. They tossed her some unexpected breaking news, and she flawlessly switched gears from reading the news to ad-libbing an unexpected event.
"It allows us to see how people respond in a nonscripted environment," Connors says. "Anchors are sort of the quarterbacks in a breaking news situation. It was important that she ... had a background as a great reporter."
Noland's co-anchor, Greg Hurst, says Noland brings excitement and energy to the newscasts, as well as a command of news events.
"If you're sitting there and saying 'Oh, look, the building is on fire; look at the flames,' that's not going to help viewers at all," Hurst said. "But she adds depth and insight, and she clicked with everyone right away."
Noland says she liked New York but wanted regular hours and wanted to move to a place where she could afford to buy a house for her family. She hadn't ever thought about Houston before, but when her agent told her about the job, she was interested.
"People here are so friendly," she says. "At first my kids thought it was strange that people could be so friendly. They were used to being in New York and being around New Yorkers."
If you go to the stations website you can see her in action!

Station expects criticism as bikini model becomes 'Anchor Woman'
Comedy/reality hybrid scheduled to debut Aug. 21
By By AARON BEARDEN
Saturday, June 09, 2007
With camera crews scurrying around Friday and directors tying up loose ends, Lauren Jones got another day closer to her CBS 19 anchor debut on Monday.
Don't let the blonde hair and modeling credentials fool you, though, says CBS 19 President and General Manager Phil Hurley. "She can do the job."
In a move Hurley acknowledges will draw criticism, CBS19 has hired Jones in conjunction with the filming of an upcoming Fox reality TV show, "Anchor Woman."
Jones, an actress, bikini model and former WWE wrestler, signed a 30-day contract with CBS 19 earlier this month. She will begin anchoring Monday night's 5 p.m. newscast. She has no journalism training or experience.
Hurley said he hopes people will tune in to CBS 19 to see Jones but continue watching after seeing the quality of the newscast.
"We think this will accelerate our growth and that people will see this as entrepreneurial," he said, waving off questions about credibility and citing ongoing Paris Hilton coverage. "That's not newsworthy," he said.
Fox is paying CBS 19 to film in its studios. Hurley declined to cite numbers. CBS 19 news lags behind regional leader KLTV 56.
"It's not about the money," he said. "We want our newscast to grow."
Josh Bingham, co-executive producer of "Anchor Woman," calls the upcoming program a comedy/reality hybrid. He said the idea came from the show's executive producer, Brian Gadinsky.
"The idea is to take somebody who has never had news experience and thrust her into the news environment," Bingham said.
Jones said the idea is a dream come true.
"Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted to be a news anchor," she said. "We are not here to make a mockery of this station."
Jones said she has found newscasting to be much tougher than she expected.
"It's harder than acting," she said. "There is a lot more pressure."
Jones realizes there may be criticism of the undertaking, but she said she wants her work, not her looks, to do the talking.
"Look is malleable," she said. "I love working with people and I think I can do a good job. That will make me credible."
"Anchor Woman" Director Mark Jacobs thinks Jones has what it takes to make it in the news industry. "She is serious about this," he said. "She wants to be the next Katie Couric."
Bingham agreed.
"She has 100 percent conviction," he said. "Lauren was the biggest unknown about this project, but she has risen to the occasion."
Hurley said CBS 19 employees initially were apprehensive about the reality show coming to town. After seeing all the publicity, "they realized that it could help their own careers," he said.
Fox has scheduled a one-hour episode of "Anchor Woman" for 8 p.m. on Aug. 21.
Hurley hopes East Texans will tune in to CBS 19 to track and support Jones' progress throughout the month, "but more importantly, to get their local news."
