He's a pretty good player in the sense that he understands his role and doesn't go beyond that role. Unlike some others (hmmm.. Derek Anderson) he understands that it is not his job to go out there and score 20 points. He is out there to help out on the boards and play solid defense.

Actually, the part you'd pay for would explain that the projection is not reliable for Chuck Hayes.

It's a computer based projection of PER (which itself is only a measure of per-possession productivity, not necessarily who's the "better player"), and some of the projections are much noisier than others. If you read Hollinger's comments on Hayes (see other thread), he says that Hayes has a very small chance of matching those projections.

I think ESPN could do a better job of explaining what exactly those numbers mean. It's not meant to be a "here's the best to worst players in the league" thing. In fact, Hollinger says Yao is the best center in the league, even though he's "ranked" second on that list.

that list blows. chris paul shouldn't be number 7 and yao is better than ak47.

It's just based on PER, which is a formula made up by John Hollinger. Hayes is very efficient given the minutes he plays, which boosts his PER. However, JVG himself has noted how Hayes' production goes down with more minutes. In no way is Hayes the 33rd best player in the NBA. He is probably one of the best players that averages under 10 minutes a game.

The ranks are pretty bad. Like T-Mac at 12 (ranked to low). Some will say, well he missed most of the year. Well, Amare Stoudemire is ranked 4, and he only played 3 games last season.

Like someone has aleady pointed out, this is not a 'best player' in the league ranking. This is just player efficiency ranking which was based on some weird formula nobody understand. It's nothing.

PER (or Player Efficiency Ranking) is described here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_efficiency_rating)

It isn't strictly an efficiency rating, despite the name. Allen Iverson was in the top 5, but you can't really call him "efficient."

What it does is sum up the measurable contributions (i.e. what you can glean from the boxscore) of a player over the course of the season per minute, adjusted for team pace (the "faster" the team, the more opportunities for collecting "stats"), and relative to the league average. It isn't meant to be a definitive measure of who the best player is. It tells part of the story -- the stuff you can measure -- but other aspects of the game which are more difficult to measure (man defense, for instance) is not taken into account.

While I think it's certainly useful sometimes to focus on per-minute or per-possession stats rather than the common per-game stats, minutes played is obviously an important factor in a player's overall productivity. PER ignores issues of whether a player is capable of playing heavy minutes or if the player can play a full season without missing significant time due to injuries. For devising a comprehensive assessment of how good a player really is, these are just some of the things one would also need to take into account. But that's not what PER is meant for.
