Yeah he retained the rights to the name but Cleveland demanded they get a new franchise and that they got to keep the name/history. That we didn't is a traveshamockery. I decision of stuplendiferous proportions.

There wasn't as much outcry from the fans in Houston as there was in Cleveland. We hardcore fans, it hurt us just as much, but we didn't start a riot in the Astrodome like the Cleveland fans did.
The NFL had no choice but to leave the Browns name in Cleveland.

Being a native Texan I like the sound of Houston Texans.
I also love the logo and I am found of the uni's. That being said man I miss the name Oilers and as much as I like the bull that Oil Derrick was Houston.
Oh well it's 2006 and I don't want to think back to those days we have the Texans and they are my team!
If only we could get that song back!
Look out Football here we come Houston Texans number 1!

Anyone remember that pathetic "rally" at city hall (that was mysteriously scheduled for 10am on a Tuesday morning...) that no one went to? I still think that was some kind of a ploy to make it look like we didn't care about the Oilers leaving. It was all over ESPN that night.
If they would have scheduled it for a Saturday morning and/or actually publisised it, there would have been a helluva lot more people there.

The Oilers left on such bad terms that I think most fans wanted nothing to do with that team, especially Bud Adams. They wanted a fresh start. I think the crappiness of the Texans is causing some post breakup nostalgia. If you break up with a girl who was a bitch, then start dating a possessive psycho bitch, the original girlfriend doesn't seem that bad in comparison.
I think if you took a poll among Houstonians, I'd bet cash money that the the majority would NOT want the old logo or colors back.

I hated the name "Texans" and I think their entire uniform/color scheme sucks.
I really, really wished they would have came back as the Oilers.
However, since thats not gonna happen, I hope that their NEW uniforms use a lot more RED
Its the color of Houston. period.

"Because she is too ugly to kiss goodbye." -when asked by Bob Costas why he took his wife with on road games.
That's kind of how I feel about the Earlers.
More good one's from Bum:

yeah, sure - i mean, i pay for a chunk of web space to memoralize all of it; i obviously have fond memories. and you'll always have a special place in your heart for your first. but i don't miss 'em. not at all. it was a miserably-run franchise that caused far more heartbreak and disappointment than joy. don't let 12 years and gallons of water under the bridge obscure any of that.

IIRC Bud didn't offer it to Bob and Bob didn't ask for it. It sucks the Oilers didn't catch on in Nashville. Bob probably wanted a fresh start and no one could blame him. The Oilers had a (luvable) loser history and people were angry at Bud. I remember reading a book on Oilers history. We used to be such badasses in the AFL. **** the Broncos, Chargers, Raiders, Jets, etc. WTF happened? OTOH, I believe the Browns were one of the NFL's original franchises and had a history of championships. We lost cause the columbia blue oil derrick is Houston.

IIRC, the Oilers were last champions about 1962-3. They got blown out by the Raiders in 1967 and probably didn't make it back to contender status until the mid-to late-70s (with Pastorini battling those great Steeler teams) and then again with Moon (but never quite attaining the pinnacle).
I went to some Oiler games at Jeppesen Stadium, Rice Stadium and the Astrodome all. Bob Talamini spoke at my pee-wee football banquet in 1965...

you recall incorrectly. the tennessee fans did not want bud to maintain the name; it had no connection to his new home. he steadfastly refused to change; it was his name, his franchise. lines were drawn, sides chosen. the nfl eventually stepped in and leaned on bud to change it. he did, on the condition the nfl would retire the oiler name, which they did.
bud then did what only bud could do - he selected a replacement name that had even less connection to tennessee than the oilers had.

Fan interest is something cultivated as a child, living and dying after school each day with each win and loss of the hometown club. You get attached to the players who were on those clubs, and you idolize those guys in a way that you just don't as an adult.
Like Max, I grew up with the Run-and-Shoot. Both the Oilers (Warren Moon and his crew of smurf receivers) and the Cougars (Klingler, Ware) saw their greatest successes with that system, and it was alot of fun to watch, even if it was fundamentally flawed as an offensive philosophy. My first sports love was the Oilers, and I watched them religiously, even when they broke my heart time and again. As an adult, I just can't build up the same level of passion for the Texans, although I hope they succeed.

That's why it made soooo much sense to honor Warren Moon there on Saturday. Nice going, bud.

I actually thought the Titans were in relation to Nashville being the "athens of the south", with that replica of the parthenon being there.

This is an exercise in historical revisionism: the Luv Ya Blue era was a blip on a radarscreen of decades of football futility. Overall, the Oilers were one of the most awful, heartbreaking teams in the history of the NFL. When you look up the word "jackass" in the dictionary, Bud Adams picture is there. The first years and the Luv Ya Blue era is all that I want to remember. No I don't want to remember the Warren Moon era because images of Buffalo keep coming up. We need to always remember, sports is not about the fans, it is about our money.
mrpaige
10-03-2006, 11:25 AM
The years of heartbreak, though, were part of our history and connection with the team. When we lost the team, we lost all the things that made us a fan for all those years.
Honestly, I do think that most people in the area wanted a fresh start, and if I were Bob McNair, I'm sure I would've wanted a new name/image, too, especially since the Oilers name was so tied to Bud Adams (whereas the Browns name seemed to be easy for Cleveland fans to separate from Modell).
But I do miss the Oilers a good bit, and the new name, etc. has made it that much more difficult for me to connect to the Texans, even though I like the name and love the logo/uniforms of the Texans.
But I think it's great that Houston was able to get a new team as quickly as they did and didn't have to go and poach some other city's team.

If an Astro fan caught a foul ball in a playoff game, I don't think he's have to be escorted out of the stadium and then have his whole life ruined because of it.
We also don't burn our city down when our team wins a championship.

possible. they didn't change their name until 1999. but it was never going to happen. oilers meant more to adams than anyone.
cleveland organized - they threatened lawsuits that would have cost the nfl MILLIONS; all the league had to do was leave the browns name, colors, et al, alone. the nfl caved. houston mounted no such obstacle.

The Oilers will ALWAYS be my favorite football team. They represented our city with class,no matter the score. So active in civic affairs, just a bunch of good ole boys, forever a part of Houston. We lived and died with them..The Oilers brought our city together. And yes a wonderful reminder of childhood.Memories of the games, pep rallies,Earl,Bum,and all those characters throughout the years.
For a long time I hated Bud,but as I've grown older my feelings have softened and I remember the good times and appreciate what he's done for our city and the NFL.

Especially when our GM got hammered and mooned a wedding party. Or our defensive coordinator slugged our offensive coordinator on national TV. Or when our offensive lineman was suspended for being with his wife while she was giving birth. Or Bud being the only owner in the league who didn't allow tailgating. Or Jerry Glanville.
