I'm starting this thread so that we can seperate the Astros game talk and the Cardinals game talk. this thread is to be used as we use the Astros game thread. As always:
All Cardinals series talk goes in here. DO NOT GIVE PLAY-BY-PLAY! If you need PBP try Yahoo, ESPN, or Sportsline.

Castor,
With all due respect, I think people enjoy reading about the Cards in the Astros thread....
I know it is a good idea, but I would bet that everyone continues posting in the Astros thread....
And you NEVER screw with a winning streak.....
So, in honor of superstitions, and our team's last gasp at the playoffs....I ask you dear Moderator..........
Please....LOCK this thread !!

Yeah I agree. It is a lot easier and builds more excitement when all talk is in the Astros thread. You don't have to keep going back and forth from thread to thread and end up losing track of the conversation.

It's funny because about a week ago (right as we started winning), I was sitting there thinking about all of the insanity that's been happening the last two seasons with us getting into the playoffs. I ended that thought with a "Nope. We're 6 games out of the wild card(or whatever it was), and 8 and a half out of the division. Not gonna happen this year. Our mojo has run out."
Now, here we are, sitting a game and a half back, possibly looking at the playoffs.
It's awesome to be an Astros fan!
Even if we don't make it in, I appreciate all of the hard work, toughness, and never say die from this team. I'm a very proud fan!

Cards' Lead in NL Central Just 1 1/2 Games (http://my.ev1.net/english/news/newsarticle.asp?articleID=50457118&subject=sports)
Things have gone so sour for the St. Louis Cardinals that even their ace is coming up empty.
Mike Cameron's two-run double capped San Diego's four-run seventh inning against Chris Carpenter, and free-falling St. Louis saw its lead in the NL Central shrink to 1 1/2 games following the Padres' 7-5 victory Tuesday night.
"This is a time when we need to start winning ballgames," Carpenter said. "Unfortunately, I couldn't come up with a big pitch when I had to."
San Diego's magic number to clinch the NL West is down to four after its sixth straight win.
"It's amazing that we were able to come back on him the way we were," Padres starter Woody Williams said. "It doesn't happen very often, but I guess things were on our side tonight."
Ronnie Belliard homered twice and had three RBIs for the Cardinals, who also got a two-run single from Jim Edmonds in his first start in a month after being sidelined with post-concussion syndrome. It didn't prevent them from losing their seventh in a row because Carpenter (15-8) failed to protect a three-run lead.
St. Louis appeared to have all but clinched the division title with a seven-game lead and 13 games to go. But the Cardinals' skid has coincided with a winning streak for the Houston Astros, who beat Pittsburgh 7-4 Tuesday night for their seventh victory in a row.
"We're not OK because we can't make enough happen to win a game," La Russa said. "But we're still alive, so we understand that also."
Williams (11-5) won his fourth straight game with six solid innings for the Padres, who have a two-game lead over the Dodgers with five games remaining. Cameron had two hits and three RBIs and Josh Bard, a late substitution at catcher when Mike Piazza decided he wanted a day off Tuesday instead of Wednesday, was 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the seventh.
Trevor Hoffman got the last three outs for his major league-leading 44th save in 49 chances and the 480th of his career. He got the day off Monday after making six appearances in eight games and breaking Lee Smith's major league career save record on Sunday. Hoffman struck out Belliard with a runner on second for the final out.
"Last year I don't think we were very good, I really don't," Williams said. "They rebuilt this team and we put a pretty good product out there now."
Carpenter, the NL Cy Young winner last year and among the front-runners again this season, struggled in losing his second straight start. He labored through 120 pitches in seven innings, allowing six runs on 12 hits.
He had been 5-0 in a span of eight starts before faltering in the last two in which he's given up 12 earned runs in 15 innings to hike his ERA to 3.09. He had been 8-3 with a major league-leading 1.46 ERA at home before getting smacked around by the Padres, who have won nine of 11 and at 17-7 have the majors' best winning percentage in September.
Carpenter got pinch-hitter Ryan Klesko on a lineout to start the seventh before the next four batters reached safely, with Bard's two-run double cutting the gap to 5-4. Russell Branyan took a called third strike before Cameron sliced a double off a cut fastball down the right-field line for a 6-5 lead.
"It was no surprise, they were throwing that pitch all night," Cameron said. "It turned out that it was a very big hit."
Williams shook off a pregame fall in the clubhouse about an hour before the game when his spikes gave way on a slick surface and allowed five runs, three earned, in six innings. He gave up only two runs in 17 2-3 innings in his three previous appearances.
Belliard, acquired from the Indians on July 30, has four of his 13 homers since joining the Cardinals. He hit the first pitch from Williams in each at-bat, connecting with the bases empty in the second. His two-run shot in the fourth reached the third of four decks in left field and put St. Louis ahead 3-2.
Errors on consecutive plays helped the Cardinals score a pair of unearned runs and take a 5-2 lead in the fifth.
Bard's one-hop throw to second on Juan Encarnacion's tapper in front of the plate handcuffed shortstop Geoff Blum to put runners on first and second with one out in the fifth. Third baseman Russell Branyan couldn't find the handle on Scott Rolen's grounder near the bag in time to load the bases, and Edmonds followed with a two-run single that made it 5-2.
Adrian Gonzalez added an RBI single in the eighth off Adam Wainwright to put the Padres ahead 7-5.
Notes: Belliard is 7-for-15 with three homers and six RBIs against Williams. ... Williams allowed a total of one homer in his three previous starts. ... The Padres are 4-1 against the Cardinals, who are 22-11 overall against the West.

They have the Brewers and the Astros have the Braves. They play at home and the Astros are on the road. Advantage Cards. However, baseball is a game of streaks. The Astros are red hot, the Cards, ice cold. I say we got a chance. If the Cards lose tonight and the Astros win, I like our chances even better. If the Cards do pull this one out, they are going to be a quick exit in the playoffs. The Astros will likely go farther. Momentum, baby!

I agree, tonight is HUGE...if we can get within 1/2 game then the Cards have to go on the road for ONE more game in San Fran....which could be a huge wild card advantage for us.

Felipe Alou is sending mixed signals...saying that Bonds is sitting out the AZ series so he's rested for a final showing in the Dogers series, b/c that series has playoff implications that the AZ one doesn't. He says that "it's time to let the kids play". He *also* says that, in the event of a trip to STL:
"We would make people go to the game as an organization, and the league has to take a stand. It's an important game for the National League and the integrity of the game to play."
So, we really don't know what to expect.

I like this quote. I hope they follow through with it. I've never been an advocate of tanking games even though a well timed loss may have delivered Roy to the Rockets. You play the games not necessarily for yourself, but to make teams earn a pennant.
I can see the integrity of the game being more of a baseball thing because so few teams make the playoffs.

I disagree - lots of veterans shut it down at the end of the season if there's no reason not to. Vlad is done as well. Clemens may have been done if we didn't make this run.
San Fran's obligations are to themselves and their team - not to the Astros or Cards or the NL Central race. The Astros had plenty of opportunities to win the division throughout the season - the fact that we now might need their help is not really their problem. It sucks for us, but I don't think they have any obligations to us. Same with Atlanta and Milwaukee this weekend.

I am convinced that every team in the majors has to go through a Pujols 'shock therapy' session before they learn that. I think a lot of teams don't really believe the guy is as dominant -- or capable of taking over an entire game -- as he looks on TV, at least until they're served a 'Pujols special'.
Very disappointing the Pads couldn't hold on that late in the game, but that's how it works sometimes...

I wish he hadnt hit that homerun, but I gotta admit that his stare was pretty tight. They just lost 7 in a row, he hits a monster home run that ends up being a game winner....so I cant blame him.

You don't admire your work. That's bush league. You never saw Bagwell or Biggio do that. You don't see Jeter doing that. You never saw Ripken doing that or Will Clark. That's bull----. Get your ass out of the box and trot around the bases and go sit down, or I'll dot your ass next AB.
That's the one thing I really admire about Ensberg. He doesn't watch and he sprints around the bases like it's an inside-the-park job.

Yea I was just watching a replay last week a Biggio homerun recently (against Reds or Phils) and noticed he pretty much looks at the ball for a second at most. He just shoots his head down and starts jogging. I knew he did that, but didnt realize how quickly he does it.

I've been watching baseball as long as I can remember. I've seen "bush league". I've seen pitchers throw intentionally at batters' heads, I've seen a player spit on an umpire, I've seen a player chunk his bat at an umpire. A player doing the baseball equivalent of holding his arm up an extra two seconds after making a three pointer doesn't even come close.

it's pujols. sure it really doesn't matter if he puts his head down and runs or stands and stares at his crap, but as an astros fan i'm definitely biased. pujols is enemy number one and this sure doesn't make him more appealing.
i'm spoiled by the astros, call them panzies or whatever, but they play the right way.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Admiring your dinger, striking a cocky-assed pose like Edmunds, or doing that stupid bunny-hop that Sosa does is bush league. Plain and simple. I agree when you're talking about doing it after every HR or in a 9-2 game or something like that. But the two biggies - the one against Lidge and the one yesterday, I can understand. The Lidge one saved their season from elimination (for at least one more day) and the one yesterday may have just saved a season that was going down the tubes very fast. Those kinds of HRs, I have no problem with players enjoying the moment.
Then again, I also subscribe to the Jose Lima philosophy. He always said that he'd continue to do his little celebrations after a strikeout. If you didn't want him to, don't strike out. And if you hit a HR, feel free to dance around the bases. There's nothing wrong with players enjoying the moment, IMO. But that assumes its a big moment - the stupid stares after meaningless homeruns is absurd. It should always be about the team.

You won't ever see Berkman, Biggio, Huff, or any of our guys admiring our home runs, regardless of the magnitude. I mean look at Burke last year vs Atlanta, that was one of the biggest HR's in Astros history, yet even as a young guy who hadn't seen much playing time he didnt really start celebrating until he touched home plate.
It's totally normal to hate Albert Pujols and his antics if you're an Astros fan- we despise Pujols the same way Cardinals fans despise Berkman. Just be happy we have one of the classiest organizations in the league and root for our guys hard.

A loss for the Cards tonight is HUUUUUUGE. It ends the Pujols Homer Momentum and allows us to match whatever they do over the weekend and still have chance with that SF game (although I don't want to depend on that game for a STL loss).
Let's go Brew Crew

If you watch the Cards broadcasts, you can sense the animosity between Hrabosky and Dan Mclaughlin (esp. contrasted to when Hungo does games with Joe Buck).
McLaughlin isn't afraid to call out the orgnaization, or question Tony's moves... but Hungo often looks down at him from his pedastal, and makes some sort of snyde comeback indicating how he never "played the game" or something like that.
Santo is just a big dumb teddy-bear... nobody really takes him seriously, thus his antics are somewhat tolerable because you know he's just a big overgrown fan loving the game.
Hungo, on the other hand, is sarcastic, non-respectful, and he thinks he's smarter then everybody actually expects to be taken seriously (huge diff. b/t santo)... the biggest measure of this is the fact that virtually NONE of the die-hard Cards fans that I know like him at all. He's a laughing stock.
Yeah Davis... just walk Preston freaking Wilson, and threaten to walk So Taguchi.
Its only Pujols next... that's all.

Man, Standing ovation for the Brews! Way to come to play! As for STL, this has got to be the worst case scenario for them. We win, they're losing and using their poo pen by the 3rd. Disaster! :D
Most Cards fans I know (and I live too damn close to them) have LaGenius first by a mile. They blame him for everything in a trickle down manner, from playing Rolen to much (not realizing that he's just a fragile player) to keeping pitchers in too long (not realizing that their pen is poo). I am a big believe that LaGenius does more harm to their team than good but he does get a bit too much blame in my opinion.
LaRussa gets a ton of blame... mainly because he always has good teams that come up short.
But on the flip-side... he always has good teams, thus every single decision he makes is up for scrutiny (since most of them are made in meaningful situations). There's always flavors of the month like Joe Girardi and Ned Yost who look good (but are on mediocre teams), and they rarely get flack.
Its also not just LaRussa... its the Larussa/Dave Duncan duo that has been together since Oakland. Some have questioned how they develop pitchers... turning hard throwers into control artists, and over-working guys with questionable arms/injry histories.
LaRussa also essentially invented the modern-day closer, set-up man, and lefty-specialist... sometimes he's a victim of overuse of his own creation.

Forget Yankee mystique, we have Astro Mystique. Im remember in the 03 ALCS, when Aaron bleepin Boone hit the walkoff, he did the interview right on the field with FOX and he was at a loss for words. He was like, man this....this is stupid, this is ridiculous. What the Astros are on the virge of doing is just unfathomable. The things this team does are unreal.
If the Pooholes' lose this one I think we will do it. Here we go Brewers....here we go.....

Oh, they're booing. Don't buy into their "holier than thou, best fans in america" routine... they're just as whiny/sour when things don't go their way.
Frankly, I prefer the obnoxious NY and Boston fans... they keep it real, even if they're a little too rambunctious/emotional at times.

this is the kind of thing that changes the personality of a franchise...something that fans identify with for a long, long time.
compound that with the fact that this is our 3rd miracle comeback in a row...that starts to become the personality of the franchise...and that has staying power...particularly in baseball where history is sooooo emphasized.

Over the long term I've usually liked the Cards, but not the last few years. LaRussa is one of the main reasons. My gut has been against them for the last 5-6 years. The only time I felt it strong in my heart to support them was against the Sox in the World Series.
I'm probably the only person in the world that is a fan of the Cubs, Cards, Stros and Reds. Don't ask why, but I liked the Stros (and Rockets) when I was a kid growing up in the Midwest.

Plus the guys that are doing it are the future of this franchise...remember the stygma this team had back in the 90's and early 00's...the offense dissapeared in the playoffs....well we overcame that, turned the page, and this new crop of Astros players (with a few veterans to help us along the way) are helping this franchise to evolve.

All of this is a product of Roger Clemens, and has been for 3yrs. There is no way to underestimate what he has done for this organization, and the city. Houston is now a baseball town thru and thru. When he came here with his buddy Andy P, he brought us instant credibilty, instant respect and took the organization to another level.

Wow... this is almost a carbon copy of the game that the Brewers ROUGHED us up in 2003.
They had a 9-1 lead in the second inning before we came up to bat. Their starting pitcher was Wayne Franklin.
Our starting pitcher, Jeriome Robertson, was traded that off-season. We all knew that his win numbers were a joke, but that last game was almost a "lightbulb" going off in everybody's head that this guy was awful.
The guys we got back in that trade: Luke Scott and Willy Taveras.
Crazy how this game works... basically, we can pretty much thank these same Brewers for getting us the wonderkid that has been a huge part of our comeback ans winning streak.

Ironically, in an article previewing the series, several Milwaukee players said they owe it to Houston to play hard, and try to win these games... then you see Davis work on some swings, and its pretty evident that all these teams are going to do whatever they want to do.
But, I like the 4-0 lead!

I think honestly the Mets are the most vulnerable at this point...the Pads and Dodgers seem to be heading into the postseason on a roll... plus it usually comes down to starting pitching and the Mets are seriously suspect in that department.

I'm gonna pretend PocketRockets didnt post that.
I'm glad Milwaukee is trying. There have been many sportswriters (Kruk, Simmons, someone on CNNSI whose name escapes me) who have mentioned that the playoffs would be better with the Astros and their Big Three pitchers. St Louis is Carpenter and then a bunch of junk. Granted they have Pujols, but otherwise they are a guaranteed 1st round exit.
For Americas pasttime, and the joy of Americans everywhere, the Brewers need to kick the Cardinals' asses.

I'd love to face the Mets, our strength is the ability to shut down their lineup, and we can hit their average at best pitching. I wouldn't however want to face Peavy, Chris Young and Woody Williams and that great bullpen. Pads are dangerous. The Mets have a good record by beating up a weak NL this year with their potent lineup. They are not a good team. Trust me. I think if we got in we would do big damage, and belive me, the rest of the Mets are scared right now. Nobody wants anything to do with us.
We have taken 1 step further every year -
2004 - Won 1st div. series and got to NLCS
2005 - Won 1st pennant and got to World Series
2006 - Won 1st World Series......??????
