Im going to the game so they better freaking win. The 2 games I went to last year (PIT & KC) were totally unwatchable. I just want to see something competitive at this point.

I'm not going to predict a win, but Culpepper has looked plain awful. I think it's an easy prediction to say that Carr will clearly outplay him. Bold prediction: Mario Williams - 1 sack. Who wins is irrelevant, neither team is going anywhere, lets just see some improvement from the Texans.

Culpepper has looked plain awful.
So did Mark Brunell.....before he played the Texans and completed his first 22 passes in a row on route to his team dropping 31 unanswered points on our defense.....

carr will outplay culpepper, and dom is dumb so our defense will appear better than theirs....however, boy if the dolphins win you can bet Dom will be smiling big....mario zero sacks... i dont think he will get one sack ALL year...i wonder whose the rb for texans now gado or dayne?

Ron Dayne rushes for 158 yards. Andre Johnson catches 125 yards, Moulds 88.

timwalters (original nick, btw ;) ), I bet your signature to mine that it doesn't happen that way with Mario Williams.

Ronnie Brown and Culpepper have breakout games.

Capers has batteries and water bottles bouncing of his head. He leaves under a security cloak of HPD's finest. HPD pistol whips him in broom closest near the tunnel.

I kinda wanna score tickets for this one in the hopes of getting a sign on TV.
I'm kinda going with "Adrian Peterson, we need help!!!!" or "Never send an Aggie to do a man's job."

I dont why I'm sticking my nose out again? Maybe I'm stupid, maybe i'm delusional or maybe I just somehow think they're going to get better.

Well, I dont know somehow I say the Texans win because otherwise, it will probably be several weeks before this opportunity comes again.

Final score will not be a defensive game .... Texans 27, Fins 23.

Based on possible incremental improvement offensively. Got to find a running game, thought we had one last week before the defense went "Ole!" and took us out of the possibility of not being one-dimensional.

Again, some offensive rhythm would be nice. Three and outs are death to a teams D unless you're Chicago, Baltimore, San Diego or Seattle.

It has to accidentally be better this week, because right now our defense would probably have a hard time stoping UH (the only team in town actually playing), Texas, etc. Hell, even some high school teams here would give a better challenge to our prior opponents than the Texans. Like I said, this is probably the most winnable game for at least 3 to 4 weeks.

Dont win this one! Forget beating the Pokes, sorry to say. Lose this one and it definitely will be a long season. :(

At least compete, damn! :(

it feels like a must-win. kinda weird to say that...and i don't mean it from a playoff standpoint or anything like that. but in a sense of maintaining some hope. a win before the bye week would be a really, really good thing.

The love of football and houston sports teams brought me to purchase season tickets for the Texans back in 02. I hoped i could bond with them like with the Oilers but it just hasnt taken yet. Their repeated losing and draft pick stupidity and overall boring on field product has prevented any real bonding.

I wish I cared more about the Texans, but the losses just dont hurt like the Oiler losses did. Maybe i could get into the team more if they were good, or at least competitive. We havent had a meaningful game since....ever. Watching the opening for the monday night game in new orleans reminded me of how crazy Houston used to get when the Oilers had a home Monday night game, its going to be a long time until we get one of those.

Ronnie Brown is gonna go off and Culpepper will get well like Brunell did. Lets face it, we have the worst football team in the league. I will be at this one, if only to watch R Brown run it up for my fantasy football team.

Hope Im wrong, but..

Game Keys:
*IF* the Dolphins get a running game going. It will be a long day.
Dante has not been all world. . but he is Average Qb
If the Secondary has to come up to help out the DLine. . .
Texans will start getting burned DEEP . . .. well . . more often

The Portis 70+ yd run was the most embarrassing thing about last week
because. . . once he broke the line. . NO ONE ELSE was in site.

If Dante is Patient. . . run alot of underneath stuff
and pick them apart .. it will definately open up the long ball

on Offense
Is it me . . or is David better in a Rolling Pocket?
He needs to go long more often

I also liked the RedSkin's FULL HOUSE BACKFEILD . .. the Texans should try it
The running game *has* to start working soon.

It's not a smartass comment. If you don't care about the team (your words, not mine), then why are you posting about them? I don't care about the Falcons, hence you don't see me going to a Falcons board and posting about them. So, instead of making a personal insult, why won't you just answer the question?

hmmm, then the kicking team should not try to recover the ball on onside kicks, they should just try to bat the ball out of bounds (like the receiving team occasionally does) as that's a lot easier than coming up with the ball. obviously it might be difficult to get it position to bat it as you still need a good bounce, but that fat guy that tried to recover for miami should've just pushed it out instead of falling on it.

Even the one fumble I caught (in the second half) wasn't Carr's fault. He was stripped from behind while in throwing motion...that was just a great defensive play. Carr impressed again today. That 30 yard completion to Andre while falling back with a pass rusher coming at him was just pretty.

The commentators made a really good point about our defense. They talked about the missed tackles and how the Dolphins were making at least 1 defender miss for extra yardage.

I have complained about the secondary a lot this season, but they really do miss a lot of tackles. RBs and WRs are able to gain 2-3 yards at a minimum after contact, if we want to be a good defense, we have to get better tacklers.

But a win is a win, hopefully this team will continue to improve.

If the Dolphins were the last team to touch the ball, it would be Miami ball. Whenever a live ball goes out of bounds, the last team to touch it gets possession.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I can't recall ever seeing an example of this.

Here is the section from the NFL Rulebook, and it does not explain how the kicking team can get the ball without gaining possession of it within the field of play. It seems that they need to restate Rule #6 from the kicking team's perspective.

Maybe this isn't the official detailed rulebook... Does anyone know?

http://www.nfl.com/fans/rules/kickoff

Digest of Rules

Kickoff
1. The kickoff shall be from the kicking team’s 30-yard line at the start of each half and after a field goal and try. A kickoff is one type of free kick.

2. A one-inch tee may be used (no tee permitted for field goal, safety kick, or try attempt) on a kickoff. The ball is put in play by a placekick.

3. A kickoff may not score a field goal.

4. A kickoff is illegal unless it travels 10 yards OR is touched by the receiving team. Once the ball is touched by the receiving team or has gone 10 yards, it is a free ball. Receivers may recover and advance. Kicking team may recover but NOT advance UNLESS receiver had possession and lost the ball.

5. When a kickoff goes out of bounds between the goal lines without being touched by the receiving team, the ball belongs to the receivers 30 yards from the spot of the kick or at the out-of-bounds spot unless the ball went out-of-bounds the first time an onside kick was attempted. In this case, the kicking team is penalized five yards and the ball must be kicked again.

6. When a kickoff goes out of bounds between the goal lines and is touched last by receiving team, it is receiver’s ball at out-of-bounds spot.

7. If the kicking team either illegally kicks off out of bounds or is guilty of a short free kick on two or more consecutive onside kicks, receivers may take possession of the ball at the dead ball spot, out-of-bounds spot, or spot of illegal touch.

But Ryans was the guy who knocked Culpepper on the ground in the first place, it wouldn't be fair not to credit Ryans.

Just to clarify... I was talking about the second sack (I'm not sure which one you were referring to). I went back and watched it again, and it was Weaver who brought Culpepper down by the ankle/calf, and to be honest, Weaver should have gotten credit for the full sack, seeing as Mario/Ryans didn't touch Culpepper until after he was on the ground.

I'm still glad they gave half to Mario though :)

Hmmm, let's take a look at DD's predictable and oh so thorough "analysis"...

22 completions, 230 yards (over 10 yds per completion).
17 completions to receivers, only 5 completions to RB's.
AJ 9 catches, 11.2 yds per catch
Moulds 4 catches, 19 yds per catch

Yeah, Carr needs to stop settling for the dump off pass...

When I made the comment he had been dumping it short, and you can throw short to your WRs too.

However, I tip my hat to Carr today, I thought he played very well, and the offensive line started to give him some time.

Houston deserved the win today, they outplayed the Dolphins.

have to hand it to you, DaDa. Pretty solid prediction on the stats, Moulds got a few more yards than you predict but we'll give you the mulligan on that one. :D

Most importantly, the stat that really matters changed, we got a W!

Still scratch my head a little about not trying to at least get a FG at the end of the first half. Oh well, the strategy worked this time because this team, Miami is not very good. Another time, another team dont count on it.

You know what's even more amazing? The Texans yet again had more than 70,000 seats sold, even with IC2000 and the haters promising that seats were available and the Texans missed out on their great chance to sell out games!

Wow guys, just imagine how many more seats we could've sold and how electric the atmosphere would've been if we had Reggie and his 11 carries for 22 yards back there today. It would've been incredible.

This just in guys, but Wrong-wich is choking AGAIN! Are the Jags the most overrated team in the NFL or what?

Leftwich cant even lead these guys to the toilet bowl much less the Super Bowl. We talk smack about Carr but Leftwich flat out sucks!

The only reason this team is above .500 is their D it's as advertised but aside from that this team thinks their special but they arent AGAIN! Hopefully in 3 weeks, the Texans can smack em in the mouth. :D

You know, during the end of the 3rd quarter and the beginning of the 4th quarter I had as much fun watching a Texans game as I've had in almost 2 years! The last time I had that much fun was at the J-ville game in 2004 when we won and improved our record to 5-2. That was on Halloween 2004.

THIS is supposed to be what it's like having a real NFL team!

No. 1 pick Williams finally gets first sack in Texans' win

HOUSTON (AP) -- On the brink of his first win as coach of the Houston Texans, Gary Kubiak couldn't bear to look.

Too bad, because if he'd turned around he would have seen No. 1 draft pick Mario Williams make a game-saving play. Williams tipped a two-point conversion that would have tied the game and finally got his first sack as the Texans beat Miami 17-15 on Sunday.

The Dolphins trailed 17-9 when Daunte Culpepper found Chris Chambers for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:39 to go to pull within two. Miami went for the 2-point conversion, but the pass by running back Ronnie Brown was tipped by Williams and sailed over Chambers' head.

"He threw it and I just reached up and tipped it," Williams said. "I was in the right place at the right time."

The Dolphins (1-3) tried an onside kick and almost recovered, but the ball squirted out from underneath Keith Adams and the Texans fell on it and ran out the clock.

"That was pretty cowardly," Kubiak said, referring to his turning away from the play. "I've been that way in football through a lot of things. I'll make a call and just walk away. I heard everybody go crazy, so I knew it was good. That was a great sound."

After Carr's 1-yard score put Houston (1-3) ahead 10-6 early in the fourth, Williams got to Culpepper for a 3-yard loss. The sack was the first of his career and his first tackle of the game.

Williams jumped for joy and hugged a teammate as the crowd responded with a standing ovation.

"Now you can't say I don't have a sack," Williams said. "It was a good thing, but at the same time, playing a game and putting the pressure on him, that was a great ending to get a sack."

On the next play, Williams and fellow rookie DeMeco Ryans combined to take Culpepper down again, this time for a 7-yard loss. The Dolphins were forced to punt and the Texans responded with another touchdown, this one a 3-yard catch by Andre Johnson that lengthened the lead to 17-6.

Johnson finished with nine receptions for 101 yards.

The Texans found a pass rush against the Dolphins, sacking Culpepper on the first play of the game and harassing him all day. Houston had just three sacks entering the game but got to Culpepper five times. The less-mobile Culpepper has been sacked 21 times this season in his return from reconstructive knee surgery.

He was 23-of-39 for 249 yards and a touchdown.

"We know we're a better offense than we played today for the first three quarters," Culpepper said. "We just waited a little too late to put on a surge."

Kubiak's first win came against a defense led by former Houston coach Dom Capers, who was fired by Houston in January after a 2-14 season. It broke a five-game losing streak dating to last season.

The game was an ugly defensive struggle for most of the first three quarters, with neither team managing a touchdown and the Dolphins' field goals coming off Texans turnovers. It was 3-3 at halftime.

"I told our players that when you play teams this time in the season that haven't won a game, they're very dangerous teams," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said. "They're a little bit like where they want to prove something ... and I think their team played awfully well today."

The Dolphins took the lead on a 29-yard field goal by Olindo Mare in the third quarter that was set up by a 19-yard fumble return by Jason Taylor, who sacked Carr and stripped the ball before recovering it.

Houston finally took the lead on a 10-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Carr's run. The defense bit on a fake to Ron Dayne and Carr trotted into the end zone untouched before celebrating by throwing the ball high up into the stands.

Carr completed 22 of 29 passes for 230 yards with an interception and was also sacked five times.

Will Allen grabbed the ball out of Johnson's hands for an interception in the second quarter. But the Dolphins couldn't move the ball and had to settle for a 52-yard field goal by Mare.

Game notes
Mare kicked his 14th field goal of 50 yards or longer, tying the Dolphins record held by Pete Stoyanovich. ... Johnson had the 12th 100-yard receiving game of his career.

Just got home from the game.

The defense took a few naps today but overall they did good.

We need to run the ball more effectively if we're going to ever get anywhere this year.

Mario finally got the monkey off his back, Carr is probably still the #1 rated passer.. so all you haters can suck it.

Frankly, this post is weak. Yes, it wasnt a patented Bruce Smith/ LT/Julius Peppers sack but you'll take them however you can get them. Plus alot of other possibilities could've happened, he could have tripped and allowed Crap-pepper to get a first down. Imagine the reaction and the ripping the media would give him here and nationally this week. He got the sack, dude be happy. Jeez. Think getting sacks is easy in the NFL? He got rewarded for his hard work and assisting from teammates no one gets it done alone. Ryans, Weaver and Williams are starting to play off each other. Bottom line, the Texans needed stops, sacks and ultimately a W. I'll take substance over style any day of the week. :D

I was there... only "empty" seats were those in the club/suite levels (which have to do more with people staying in the concourse, socializing and eating food all day, rather than "unsold" tickets).

This game me some optimism for years to come.
On those back to back plays DeMeco Ryans and Mario Williams basically teamed up to get those sacks on Culpepper. :D
And the thing that makes me hopeful is for years to come watching that duo be the anchors of our defense and hopefully team for a whole lot more sacks for the rest of their careers.

Ok, I'll agree with that but take this into consideration. One thing to note Crap-pepper went self-preservation if he would've kept his head up that would have been a far more devastating tackle. :p

Interesting tid-bit:

The Texans have three leaders at no LOWER than number three of overall statistical performance.

Offensive/Defensive Stats (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/statistics)

Carr, #1 top passer rating.
Johnson, #3 for total receiving yards
Ryans, #3 for total tackles

What to make of this? Early season inflation? I don't know, but certainly the individual numbers haven't translated to wins....YET

Great win, lets stick it to the Cowgirls.

Carr's QB rating today was 95.5. That probably means he retains his top passer rating through week 4 (he had a sizeable 6+ point lead over #2 last week, and there wasn't a whole lot of offense around the NFL today).

If Carr didnt get screwed with that "interception", he would for sure be the #1 guy through 4 weeks.

I'm gonna agree with IC2000 for once. Why did mario get credit for the second sack? He was like the 3rd person to pile on after Culpepper went down?

Thanks for the Replay Slowly. During the broadcast I thought the PBP guy said "that is a guerilla that jumped on his back." The gurilla being Mario. Good thing I was wrong.

PS. I'm very disapointed by IC2000 and Fattybastards lack of smack prior to and post the A&M/Tech game. Especially IC2000, that's very Kubiack of you.

Carr, #1 top passer rating.
Johnson, #3 for total receiving yards
Ryans, #3 for total tackles

The first two are not independent. The fact that Johnson is #3 in receiving yards goes a long way toward making Carr #1 in passer rating. But Carr has been pretty good, any fool can see that. And Ryans has been spectacular. The team has huge holes at running back and secondary. And the DL and OL aren't quite adequate. But Ryans, Carr, and the receivers are doing very well.
