Might as well be optimistic about this.

Astros magic number vs. Cardinals = 10 - any combination of Astros wins plus Cardinal losses totaling 10 gives the division title to Houston as long as...

Astros magic number vs. Reds = 6 - any combination of Astros wins plus Reds losses totaling 6 ensures the Astros finish higher than the Reds

If the Astros finish 6-0 there will be a tie if the Cards finish 4-3, so it's 9 for the tie (6 Astros wins + 3 Cardinal losses) and 10 for the outright title.

What's our magic number now?

7. Since the Astros won, it is one less than the night before.

Our magic # is 6

Cards magic # is 4

We have 3 games remaining. Cards have 5. We still need the Cards to lose 2 outta 5

Thursday-Sunday against the Brewers + a possibly makeup game Monday (if necessary) against the Giants I think.

Oh right, forgot about the giants.

Exactly. If the Cards sweep the Brewers, it won't matter what the Astros do with the Braves.

Good to know that the season series record is only 7-5 Cards, and that was before their recent woes.

For me, the most meaningful win so far is today's--today guarantees the Astros will not have a losing season.

Tomorrow's win will be even better -- clinching a winning season and opening the possibility of overtaking the Cards in the Central (should they lose again).

I think the magic number is 4 now. 3 wins and 1 cardinal loss puts us at a tie.

wait. so we have to sweep and the cards have to lose another one.....just for us to tie??

nevermind, i'm an idiot. damn insomnia.

That is correct, but the magic number to win the division is 5. All 4 guarantees is a playoff to see who wins the division.

i like 5 then. :)

however, i feel pretty confident about oswalt taking the mound vs the birds. i'd just hate to have to use him before the playoffs start.

Max,

Not me, think about it....that means we would CONTROL our own destiny.

And, I LOVE that.

I would guess that Brad Lidge would be banned from Minute Maid Park
for that game

So Cards play the Giants only if it is necessary?? They should make these decisions beforehand...

They did make the decision beforehand. The decision is that if the game is NOT needed to determine a playoff position, then it won't be played.

Which is looking that way right now, unfortunatly.
