Just checked the weather for Pittsburgh (as it seems there's always a rainout there)...

Today and tommorow should look good, but there's a 70% chance of rain for Thursday's day game. Granted, this will probably change by the time Thursday comes around, but the last thing this team needs is to either have games cancelled, or have games postponed and made-up on the Monday after the season.

Ignore him. It's funny at first, but then you realize he's just a moron...then it gets kind of sad.

Got to sweep...nothing else to do but win out. Keep winning and hope that the Padres stay hot and that the Brewers play for some pride in the last weekend of the season.

didn't want to start a seperate thread for this question, but can somebody answer this:

my buddy made a large preseason wager on our season win total being over 83.5 (which means that he needs us to finish the season on a 13 game win streak to win his bet :D how crazy would that be).

anyway, the question is, if we were to go to a 1-game playoff, does that count in the regular season standings (therefore enabling him to lose 1 of the remaining games)?

I wish the national radio types would lay off the "Don't look now, but the Astros are only 2.5 games out. They're a team nobody wants to face in a short series." Dude, y'all wrote us off and now the team is making their annual Phoenix-like rise from the dead. Stay the F off of the bandwagon. Let us here in this inconsequential, small market enjoy the ride. We'll deal with the rest of y'all in October.

You know,I have a feeling too and the crystal ball shows "Joker, Joker, Joker!" I mean "WWW". LOL.

Man, after reading some of those STL threads, you get the feeling if Crapnturd goes "kick me here and shove this baseball bat up my ass with no vaseline" there just may be a line to jump out of the Gateway Arch later tonite.

We truly could not have had a better opponent for the Cards to face off with to help culminate the colossal chokejob to come. The Pads are hungry. Keep fightin Dodgers, just win we have to keep dangling the carrot. No joy just yet. :D

Wow, we can be negative but, hell some of them were throwing Pujols under the bus. Wow! I mean as bad as things have gotten we never booed Sir Lance and we never ripped on him in here that I see regardless.

But, they're great baseball fans and we're a bunch of redneck hicks who last week couldnt spell baseball now we are one.

I've heard some say we, Astros fans are classless and rude. I think the opposite. I'd say we are very intelligent and we know how to seize the moment. Example, when we played the Braves in 04, their fans gave them no energy to feed off of. While here we generated enough frickin electricity to power Texas for a month.

Remember in the playoffs, all bets are off and as a fan you grab any psychological advantage you can to create fear and doubt in the opposition. That's what being a fan is ALL about! Remember, the "jailbird" chant in game 4 of the NLDS in reference to Furcal, I started that and surprise he did nothing the rest of the game offensively. I rest my case ...

I hope you all realize the territory we are potentially going into ... this comeback will be greater than the 78 yankees, the 69 mets, and the 51 giants. Ironically, all the above won the world series championship. Whoohoo!

Buckle up, this is where it starts getting fun! :D

The original astrosdaily board was great; then they shut it down and sent everyone to the EZboards place--and that place is a ridiculous soap opera. I agree that OWA has the best baseball discussion, but it's more of a niche place than CC.net.

OWA is an absurd board.

JimR routinely spouts complete BS, and if anybody questions him it's like the end of the world. Earlier in the season when Willy was benched for Burke, he posted that he had received insider information stating that the move was made because of defense. The exact quote was that Willy was "killing the team" with his poor defensive play. Never mind that he wasn't, that he's a better defensive CFer than Burke, that he was struggling at the plate, that Burke was raking at the plate in limited appearences, and that the Astros offense was horrific. Even if you didn't watch Willy's play visually (he was doing fine), his range factor and zone rating bear out that he was far from hurting the team with his defense. ZOMG MATEMATICKS R TEH STOOPIAD LOL.

Not to mention there is a board-wide sentiment of technophobia and a fear of mathematics. Arky Vaughn is the only poster with a brain over there. JimR and Noe are probably the worst. Every statistic except for RBIs is evil and computers are equally evil and should not be trusted. Nothing can be trusted except for actually going to every game and watching. Also, nobody in the Astros management has ever done anything wrong.

You've been spoiled by the good pitching you've seen here the last three years... Pettite is still a very good pitcher, he's recovered from the bad first couple of months, and can still give you more quality outings than most NL pitchers.

Of course he was worse this year.... do you know how good he was last year?

Granted, we can't be spending $10 million a year on him, but the club definitely should try to work out a 1 or 2 year deal at $6-7 million per.

You guys are tossing over Roger and Andy, but you don't realize how hard it is to find guys who give you quality starts (let alone Cy Young candidates)... name some potential replacements before you start getting rid of them.

I agree Nick, we definately to work something out with Andy. Granted he's a rookie, I thought Hirsh would be able to step in and contribute right away, instead it looks like he might be at best a 4th starter in the rotation next season. If Andy follows Clemens and retires, or just leave through FA, I'm not sure if we'll be able come anywhere near replacing those two.

Who the hell wouldn't want to ride that gravy train for as long as they give you quality starts is my question? We have enough holes on the team already, they don't need to make it bigger by preemptively saying goodbye to Pettite and Clemens. Also, you have to consider where the Astros play their home games. I know Minute Maid Park has played pretty fair/average the last 2-3 years, but its still a hitters haven... and its just a testament on how good our pitchers have been at making their pitches/hitting their spots when they're at home.

You don't want to sign a guy who's pitched really well in a pitchers park for many years (like any Dodger, Oakland A, Mariner, or Giant)... or any former St. Louis Cardinal for that matter (they're probably all shell-shocked), cause they're going to be mentally intimidated by the short porch.

Does it really bother pitchers that much? If anything I'd say not sign them because their stats might be inflated. I might just be ignorant, but I've never heard an argument for a hitters park having a large impact on a pitcher psychologically.

You must be Jose Lima's agent... belive me, that entire 2000 Astros pitching staff was completely clueless coming from the Astrodome.

There is a learning curve, and good pitching will still always thrive... but guys who have relied on fly ball outs, or pitch towards contact in general, are prone for danger at MMP.

Its all a moot point... there are no "stellar" FA pitchers that the Astros could target/afford (besides Pettite/Clemens)... they'll look to sign a veteran to replace Backe's spot in the rotation, but he won't be expected to put up sub 3 era's.

Pettite's at 75 pitches... but there's a chance that him, Roy, and Roger will be required to come back at short rest before the season's over. He'll probably come out to start the 7th, but look for Garner to pull him if things get hairy.

Nieve's next... he should stay in as long as his stuff looks good. Springer is also available tonight. Lidge/Qualls/Wheeler have all been used extensively, but you have to expect one of them is able to go if needed.

2 strikes... Branyan is K prone... bad combination here I'm afraid.

Pretty unprofessional if he doesn't get this run home... also, I bet the Red Sox wish they had Freddy Sanchez back.

AHA, so they have 5 games left after tonight.......with the last 4 in St. Louis against the Brew crew....I get it now.....

I have MADE it to the party..

Cardinals announcers again talking more about post-season awards, like MVP and Cy Young for Pujols and Carpenter, instead of worrying about what's about to happen to them... damn elitists!

If we miss the playoffs by one game, come back to that strike 3 call. Terrible, terrible umpiring.

DaDakota

WTF was that ??????

Branyan just got called out on a VERY high strike call......

It feels strange rooting for the Padres...it's like rooting for Austin Kearns a few years ago.

RocketManJosh

This umpire is horrible .. can't believe that was called a swinging strike from behind the plate (the first strike not the third one) ... Hope the Padres relievers get those calls

Nick
09-26-2006, 09:09 PM
an 0-2 mistake by Carpenter... but its still because he made the mistake of pitching to Berkman! :D

6 runs allowed in a game your team HAS to have... that's not Cy Young material, cards announcers... you can stop worrying about that.
