Multiple trade talks

The Astros are still in vigorous pursuit of a top-shelf offensive player, including Baltimore's Miguel Tejada, in advance of Monday's non-waiver trade deadline. General manager Tim Purpura said Thursday his club has several irons in the fire.

"We've tried to talk to any club that has any meaningful players that would help our situation," he said. "Right now I would say our main focus is offense, as everyone knows it should be. We've tried to be in touch and be aggressive with a lot of clubs, and that's what we're doing.

"We have a lot of things going on right now that may or may not bear fruit. We have until Monday afternoon, so hopefully we can get something done to help our ballclub and continue to get on a good track."

Purpura made it clear the Astros aren't interested in a short-term rental.

"It's always important to try to find a match where you retain the player more than just two months," he said. "With that being said, we're talking to clubs about players who would be, quote, rental-type player.

"When you talk about giving up some of your top young players, which is what every club would ask for, you hope to get a return for more than that two months."

One minute we are backpeddling like crazy and are ready to stand pat.

The other minute we are "aggresively" pursuing a high impact player who will help increase our offensive production.

is it legal to negotiate with Soriano as part of the trade? I'd love to have either him or Tejada, but Soriano is younger and has the better bat....but he's a FA so we run the risk of losing him like we did Randy and Beltran.

I would love to get Tejada, but somehow I get the feeling that Baltimore is going to get cold feet and not pull the trigger like they always seem to do when thinking about a Tejada trade. I hope this is the year they decide to make it happen.

i've been saying this all along. i totally agree. i'll be very surprised if tejada gets traded anywhere.

ESPN is reporting Carlos Lee to the Rangers in a 3 team trade. That's pretty interesting.

Management could be leaking this in the hopes it motivates the team to play harder. You don't want to be traded, so hopefully it kicks your determination into gear.

I hope that's the case. I like building from your farm system and living and dying with your draft. It's fun to watch players grow and get better. It's also tough to in times like this, but that's what makes the good times great. :D

I'm just not a fan of the Yankeeism way of trading, trading and more trading to get better.

ESPN is reporting Carlos Lee to the Rangers in a 3 team trade. That's pretty interesting.

You'd figure offense isn't really an issue for Texas. Granted Lee is a significant upgrade over Kevin Mench.

Wow...I think this deal may light a fire under the Purpura to get a deal done sooner rather than later...Lee was a guy they were targeting and I assume there's only 2 guys left (Soriano/Tejada)....I think Abreu is out of the question....I really think Lee was their #1 target.

i never once heard the astros name linked with lee. i doubt seriously the brewers would have traded him within the division.

The article yesterday on Sportsline and Ken Rosenthal's article on Fox both said the Astros were very interested in Lee....that was my only reason for thinking we were pushing for him.....

How painful will it be this weekend if Purpura chooses to hold out until Monday to make a move for a bat and the offense does what it does best and gets shut down by 3 mediocre pitchers from the D-Backs.....I guess by Monday we could be 7 or 8 back...at which time I think it's pointless.
