Astros are at the mercy of Clemens

By RICHARD JUSTICE

Hello, Roger, this is your friend Drayton.

Hey, Drayton, how's it going?

I've been better. Did you hear about Brandon Backe?

Yes, tough break. I liked that kid. He has a chance.

Not this year. We may not see him until spring training next year. We've lost Carlos Hernandez, too. Remember that excess of pitching? It's gone.

Yeah, well, stuff happens.

Roger, have you seen our rotation? We've got three guys with 11 career victories — all by Wandy Rodriguez. Taylor Buchholz and Fernando Nieve have combined for, let's see, none.

Oh, Drayton, you worry too much. Your rotation had the fourth-best ERA in the National League at the start of play Sunday. Your kids have great stuff.

I want to win a World Series. Like Phil Jackson says, "You don't win championships with kids." We need another experienced guy. Do you see where I'm going with this?

I think I do, Drayton.

I need you, Roger Clemens.

Drayton, like I told you last week, I don't know what I'm going to do. I can tell you for sure I'm not coming back any time soon.

Roger, please.

Words of wisdom ignored

Look, Drayton, I don't want to be rude, but it was your decision to let me become a free agent. Why didn't you listen to that Chronicle columnist — Justice? He tried to tell you. I know it's business and all, but I do bring a few things to the table. I've had two pretty good years.

I'd have won the Cy Young Award two straight years if I'd gotten a little offense.

I know, I know.

No, Drayton, I'm not sure you do. I come here and help you sell tickets.

I increase the value of your franchise. I'm part of your two best seasons.

And I'm arguably the best pitcher in baseball for two years. And what did you do? You let me become a free agent.

Don't remind me.

You showed me the door. I have to be honest, Drayton, that hurts. What more did you want me to do? I know I make a lot of money, but was it that bad of an investment for you? Is your franchise worth more than it was the day I arrived?

Please stop. I was afraid you'd murder me in arbitration.

Rekindle the love affair

I would have, Drayton. As my agent, Randy Hendricks, said, "This is a big boys game."

Can I just say one thing, Roger?

Of course, Drayton.

Name your price. Come back. You loved being on our team.

I did, Drayton. I loved it. I loved the guys, the fans. I really loved the buzz we created.

OK, let's do it.

It's not that simple, Drayton. I've had four months to think about things. My agents have created quite a buzz. I'm in demand. Again, I'm only in demand because you let me become a free agent.

This is home, Roger. Minute Maid Park is a 15-minute drive from your driveway. Hey, and that's some driveway you've got. Let me and Tal Smith come over and re-pave. Let us do the shrubs. I'm serious. You name it.

Yes, it's home. It'll always be home. And when I tell you I don't know what I'm going to do, I'm being honest. I may not pitch again.

Plenty of competition

But you've still got it. You're still great. You're one of those guys who makes a difference even when you're not pitching. You care so much that others care, too.

There's a problem, Drayton. The Red Sox, Yankees and Rangers all want me.

The kids wouldn't mind a summer in New England. Let's say I went back to finish where I started. That would be a pretty good story, wouldn't it? The Red Sox like the idea of having me in a rotation with Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling. That would make them the favorites, right?

I guess.

And you know how much I love the Yankees. Joe Torre was more than a manager. He was a friend. Wearing the pinstripes is special. Look, Drayton, I never should have had these choices. If you'd offered me arbitration, I wouldn't have any options.

I know, Roger.

Maybe most insulting is how you opened the door for the Rangers to sign me. The darkest day the Astros have ever had was when Nolan Ryan signed with the Rangers after the 1988 season. You practically invited me to do the same thing. What were you thinking? Don't you realize that you're now bidding against three franchises who'll blow you out of the water in terms of salary?

I didn't think it through, Roger. I should have listened to Justice.

Yes, you should have, Drayton. You should have seen me as an asset. Because that's what I am.

I know.

Now your pitching is short, and your season is in jeopardy. All of a sudden, I'm your best buddy.

Would you consider doing it for your hometown, Roger?

Hush-hush about this talk

I'll consider doing it for you, Drayton, but I want you to understand I don't like the way you handled things. You think you can go out and get anyone to pitch 200 innings with one of the lowest ERAs in the game? You can't. Besides, we're not even supposed to be having this conversation. You can't officially talk to me until May 1. I hope Bud Selig doesn't find out we're having this talk.

OK, Roger, I'm getting off the phone. But you haven't heard the last of me. I'm calling at 12:01 a.m. on May 1.

You do that, Drayton. Don't count on me being home.

1. clemens STILL hasn't signed with anyone else...the astros are the only team that has to wait until may 1. does that say anything?

2. the alternative was arbitration. they'd have gotten hosed there.

3. finally richard justice is back to writing bad articles again. he had a bit of a stretch where he showed a bit of improvement. good to have him back, again.

I guarantee, if the Astros are in 1st place at the All-Star break, Roger will sign up for the rest of the season.

definitely agree that this is justice being stupid again. I like how he referred to himself with the "should have listened to Justice" or whatever it was. ugh.

question though...is Backe really potentially out for the season as he implies here? I guess I must have missed that..

..

yeah..just like he told him that kent should ride pine behind burke. i mean, how he told him that kent should be paid whatever he asks, and shouldn't be let go. yeah. just like that.

it's awesome to take both sides of an issue so you can always be right.

I don't understand why everyone seems to forget this. I really feel that if he wanted to be somewhere else, he'd already be there.

Roger just wanted to take the kids to school. Hang out at the high school ballpark with the kids. Once school is out he can take up his hobby again of pitching for the Astros.

I think mentally it is good for the Astros. They are having to learn to win without Roger. If a young starter doesn't want to lose his spot in the rotation to Roger, then that young pitcher better be winning games.

I don't know about that, he may just hasn't made up his mind yet if he wants to pitch.

Roger's a competitor, no doubt about that. I honestly believe he cares about beefing up his career stats, though I have no proof for it. Since I believe that, it would be odd for him to sit out a month or so unless he was coming back to the Stros.

1) Man we need him on the Astros..

2) Man I could use a few hundred bucks...I have Roger stashed away on my bench in my multi-league FLB. If he comes back, its gonna push my team over the edge

The entire premise of this article is flawed. The Astros didn't "let" Roger Clemens become a free agent. He was a free agent, and he could have declined arbitration and ended up in the same boat. The Astros had no ability to prevent him from looking at other teams.

If he wanted to leave, he would have declined arbitration.

If he wanted to stay, he can still come back May 1st.

The Astros didn't lose any leverage here. The only way they would have lost something is if he intended to pitch in April, and he's shown that wasn't the case.

What an awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful awful article.

On the plus side, he didn't have to do ANY research for it. Just roll out of bed and start writing. Good work if you can get it.

Backe? What?

Backe placed on 15-day disabled list
04/15/2006 2:45 AM ET
By Jason Grey / Special to MLB.com

PHOENIX -- After having to leave Thursday's start after just two innings, Brandon Backe was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He underwent an MRI on Friday afternoon which confirmed a moderate sprain, and he will be out at least six weeks.

To take Backe's place on the roster, the Astros recalled right-hander Ezequiel Astacio from Triple-A Round Rock.

Astacio, 26, pitched six scoreless innings in his only outing of the season for Round Rock, allowing four hits while walking one and striking out four on Sunday at New Orleans. He appeared in 22 games -- 14 starts -- for the Astros in 2005, finishing 3-6 with a 5.67 ERA.

Although Astacio has been groomed as a starter, he'll work in relief for now. Rookie Fernando Nieve will take Backe's place in the rotation.

"[Starting is] what Nieve would prefer to do. It's time to go out there and strut your stuff," said manager Phil Garner. "We've got some guys wanting that opportunity. You've pitched good enough to get here. You got your foot in the door and don't let anyone else in that room with you."

6 weeks is a long time, but hardly anywhere near spring training '07

2. the alternative was arbitration. they'd have gotten hosed there.

No , they would have been forced to pay fair market value for a pitcher that is still at the top of his game and is coming off one of the greatest seasons in recent memory.

Methinks you forgot last October when he had to leave game 2 of the World Series with tears in his back. For someone about to turn 42, that causes concern for most.

Purpura said this injury is very delicate and if rest doesn't help, Backe might very well be lost for the season.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that they are having him rest 6 weeks, and THEN they will start rehabbing him. If his elbow is still bothering him, then they will likely shut him down for the rest of the season. So yeah, a season long injury is very much a possibility. Cross your fingers, I'll cross mine.

Richard Justice is a idiot. Dude knows nothing about sports as writes the same garbage every damn time. He will write the Dom Capers was the problem and the next day on the radio he will say it was CC. He will say one day Drayton is cheap and the next he will say Houston is lucky to have him.

Justice is pulling stuff out of his a$$ here like he always does. However the fact that Backe might be gone for rest of the season is really worrying. With Andy Pettite not doing very well we are essentially left with Oswalt and three rookies in the rotation. Hopefully Andy will be okay. If Roger does not come back then the Astros need to pick up a pitcher before the trade deadline. I am hoping that Wandy/Nieve/Buchholz can get about 25-30 wins between them and Andy and Roy both pitch like they did last year.

It's simple: if Clemens was already intent on playing and felt slighted by the Astros for "letting him go," then he would be on another team already. This article is just plain stupid.

On the plus side, at least the offense is clicking. And Wandy, Nieve and Buchholz have looked good so far (*crosses fingers*).

I read the Chronicle sport page every single day. I wish someone would have stolen my newspaper so I did not have to read Justice's drivel today. I mean I used to enjoy reading his articles, but he has become almost unreadable.

Andy will be ok, Personally I hope Backe is ok this year because if he is not we are in serious trouble.

Off the top of my head I can't think of too many guys we can get at the deadline we will have too see who is out of the race and which guys are gonna be in a contract year on those teams.

I wish we would of gone after Beckett this past off season but we did not and he will end up winning the cy-young in the al.

Yeah Beckett would have been nice but thats water under the bridge right now. If clemens does come back and the young guys pitch like they have so far I think we will be fine. Andy should be fine, from what I have seen so far his velocity is up from last year he is just missing spots. I guess its too early in the year to make blanket statements.
