Probably the only place they could find. I don't think they wanted to bump the "That's a fact jack" mattress guy.

Dude, this is sooooo freaking awesome! I came up with this name for the Texans (36'ers), on their NFL2002 website back in 1999 when they were asking fans for team names. It got a lot of good feedback on this site.

I don't care that I don't get any "true" credit. In my opinion, I came up with the name!

In an interview Oliver Luck said it was one of the more popular choices, but since the public can't see the results that really can't be confirmed.

There was a poll on bigsoccer.com about the options and 1836 was the clear favorite there though.

It's really not unusual when you look at European team names, like Schalke 04 or Bayer 04 Leverkusen, named after the team founding years (1904). At least it's not an EXXXTREME AMERICAN SPORTS name like Earthquakes or something of the sort

I'm a little shocked by the negative reaction here. How could any self-respecting Texan and/or Houstonian NOT know the significance of 1836?

And as someone else pointed out above, with the 49er's in SF and the 76er's in Philly, why is this such an odd and/or horrible name for the team? Its not like we're trying to set some new risky trend here.

At any rate, go 'Sixers! I'm stoked.

Houston 1836 is a fantastic name. 1836 is NOT a "nickname" like Astros or Rockets, as some people seem to think. It's not a WNBA team with a singular nickname or anything like that. So it's not "the Houston 1836," it's just Houston 1836.

Frankly, they couldn't have done better.

Earthquakes was actually the name of San Jose's team back in the 1960's in the old NASL and some other pro leagues through the early 1980's.

Oh that's great. Go ahead and piss off all the Mexicans and remind them of how Texas defeated them in battle. I though the Mexicans were supposed to be the target audience for this team in the first place!

The target audience of the team is THE CITY OF HOUSTON! What kind of marketing genious would center his efforts on one population? Do the Astros, Rockets, and Texans only market to white people? This has got to be the worst argument against the name, period.

Putting an important date in a team name is a tradition for many European teams, especially in Germany. It think it is a great name. I voted for it. I'm tired of the stupid nicknames teams get nowadays. FC _______ is already taken by FC Dallas. They weren't going to have 2 of them in the same state. Who cares what the mascot is? Do you follow a team because of a freaking mascot? I've yet to see the first JJOF (Junction Jack Only Fan) or the TOF (Toro Only Fan).

What's the problem with just being called Houston? You do know that very few soccer teams in the world actually have names like Oilers and Lonestars right? They're sticking with the traditional way to name a soccer team, not trying to bastardize it to appease people who won't come to games or buy merchandise.

I don't think just referring to them as Houston would work too well. You can't really say "Hey, want to go watch the Houston game?" or "I'm going to see Houston play this weekend". In countries where soccer is the biggest sport and most towns don't have other teams it works, but not here. Personally I'll call them Houston 1836, but I don't expect the masses to do the same.

Seriously guys, some of you need to get over it if you don't like it, it's not a big deal, just a name.

Be thankful that we have one of the best soccer teams in the country moving to our town without really having to do much working building or re-building it. That's my approach to this whole thing: one more entertainment venue. I will be happy if we can get an NHL team although I am not by any means a hockey fan, nor am I a WNBA fan but I go watch the team and support them whenever I can.

LOVE the logo, I am glad they went with the "Sam Houston on horseback" theme, I am guessing our mascot will be a Red Raiders-like mascot? (except it would be a macho general on horseback)

as opposed to a flaming homosexual.....

:D

i'm sorry, that was just too easy.

Unfortunately, they haven't quite become a hit in Austin, yet. Of course, they are $20 online. Thanks for the info, though.

In an interview Oliver Luck said that they would be moderatley priced and would probably start at $12. So my guess is they'll be 12-30 dollars.

For comparisons sake tickets for the New York team are 20-38 and I believe they are the most expensive in the league so that's worst case scenerio.

In restaurants it means "out of" or it could mean fired.

I wrote this up, to be sung to "Yellow Rose Of Texas"

There's a brand new team in Texas, that I am gonna see
Houston Eighteen Thirty-Six!, and that's just fine with me

We'll sing our song together, until you know their name
And while we sing our song for all to hear, we'll win the game!

What do you guys think?

No profanity either, which is a prerequisite for any good soccer/rugby song.

Changing the last line to "We'll sing our song, and pound our beer, and win the f***ing game" would be a start.

Wow....I am sooo pleased to see the great responses and possitive feedback so far. Houston is indeed a great city and our sports fans are great regardless of what the outside media think.

Lets go Houston!!!

I really dig the hint of oiler blue on the white uni.. I think melding the orange and blue would be really cool.. kind of vintage astros/oilers combo..

I don't like the white jersey very much. They need to do away with either the light blue or the black. Each one separately looks nice with the orange but together with the orange it looks off.

From what I've read it seems like the players there are very friendly and accesable. They would attend different functions with fans and even hang out in the tailgating area after games with fans.

Do you know which player it is?

Aaron Lanes. Here's a read (http://www.breastcancerfund.org/site/apps/nl/content3.asp?c=kwKXLdPaE&b=85314&ct=857609) about him and his mom. Apparently, they also filmed a PBS special about them and my niece will be in it.
