Willie Wonka, get ready!!

Is Ray Nagin the black version of David Duke? The guy has lost his mind. If this comment is made by a white mayor, the NAACP would be tripping over themselves to protest. In the midst of a fund raising campaign to help rebuild New Orleans, Mayor Nagin's divisive commentary isn't going to help.

New Orleans Mayor Says God Mad at U.S.

Associated Press Writer

NEW ORLEANS

Mayor Ray Nagin suggested Monday that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other storms were a sign that "God is mad at America" and at black communities, too, for tearing themselves apart with violence and political infighting.

"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin, who is black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day.

"Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves."

Nagin also promised that New Orleans will be a "chocolate" city again. Many of the city's black neighborhoods were heavily damaged by Katrina.

"It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New Orleans _ the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," the mayor said. "This city will be a majority African American city. It's the way God wants it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans."

Nagin described an imaginary conversation with King, the late civil rights leader.

"I said, `What is it going to take for us to move on and live your dream and make it a reality?' He said, `I don't think that we need to pay attention any more as much about other folks and racists on the other side.' He said, `The thing we need to focus on as a community _ black folks I'm talking about _ is ourselves.'"

Nagin said he also asked: "Why is black-on-black crime such an issue? Why do our young men hate each other so much that they look their brother in the face and they will take a gun and kill him in cold blood?"

The reply, Nagin said, was: "We as a people need to fix ourselves first."

Nagin also said King would have been dismayed with black leaders who are "most of the time tearing each other down publicly for the delight of many."

A day earlier, gunfire erupted at a parade to commemorate King's birthday. Three people were wounded in the daylight shooting amid a throng of mostly black spectators, but police said there were no immediate suspects or witnesses.

Man, I never EVER start (maybe once) any thread at all in the D&D, and never come here to pee or poop on anyone, whether yellow, purple, brown, black or white, but I thought that when I saw the article above my wife pointed out in Click2Houston, all heck was going to break loose.

This further points out this mayor's incompetence. I read an article in the December/January issue of Hispanic Magazine, a magazine which honors outstanding all sorts of "Latino" or "Hispanic" people in the U.S., which spoke of "In Katrina's Wake" what Mayor Nagin had said:
... one of the worst Katrina moments came when New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, who was hardly a model of competence in the aftermath of the disaster, told reporters that he was worried that his city might be "overrun by Mexican workers."

It seems a hurricane can wope out just about everything--except ignorance. This was after pointing out that it was mostly Hispanics (mainly Mexican immigrant workers) who took the challenge of going to New Orleans to rebuild the city all the way from as far as California and Arizona. You KNEW that it was mostly Mexicans, not African Americans, taking up the manual labor jobs regardless of place and pay.

Sad things this mayor does, indeed. , then :(

I want what New Orleans once was. We can never have her back again, in quite the same way, but we can work to make her the best she can be, considering all that has happened. Nagin will meet his justice at the ballot box. It is up to the nation to help give New Orleans her justice, which is to live again. In my opinion.

Little Palaces :Elvis Costello

Little Palaces

In Chocolate Town all the trains are painted brown
On the silver paper of the wrapper
There's a dapper little man
And he wears a wax moustache
That he twists with nicotine fingers
As he drops his cigarette ash
And someone comes and sweeps it up
And then he doffs his cap
And there's a rat in someone's bedroom
And they're shutting someone's trap
And they'll soon be pulling down the little palaces

And the doors swing back and forward, from the past into the present
And the bedside crucifixion turns from wood to phosphorescent.
And they're moving problem families from the South up to the North,
Mother's crying over some soft soap opera divorce,
And you say you didn't do it, but you know you did of course,
And they'll soon be pulling down the little palaces.

It's like shouting in a matchbox, filled with plasterboard and hope,
Like a picture of Prince William in the arms of John the Pope.
There's a world of good intentions, and pity in their eyes,
The sedated homes of England, are theirs to vandalize.

So you knock the kids about a bit, because they've got your name,
And you knock the kids about a bit, until they feel the same.
And they feel like knocking down the little palaces.

You're the twinkle in your daddy's eye, a name you spray and scribble,
You made the girls all turn their heads, and in turn they made you miserable.
To be the heir apparent, to the kingdom of the invisible.

So you knock the kids about a bit, because they've got your name,
And you knock the kids about a bit, until they feel the same.
And they feel like knocking down the little palaces.

New Orleans Mayor Says God Mad at U.S.
Jan 16 9:44 PM US/Eastern

Mayor Ray Nagin suggested Monday that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other storms were a sign that "God is mad at America" and at black communities, too, for tearing themselves apart with violence and political infighting.

"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin, who is black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day.

I found this very disturbing. It sounds like he's been huffing from the Pat Robertson pipe.

Nagin also said King would have been dismayed with black leaders who are "most of the time tearing each other down publicly for the delight of many."

I don't see though why many of y'all are criticizing him for this. Isn't this pretty much the samething that Bill Cosby has been saying?

As for New Orleans being a black city that is a fact and one of the big concerns I've heard in New Orleans was that many residents fear it won't be but will be turned into a gentrified mostly white historical piece like the French Quarter and the Garden District is. Mayor Nagin has been taking a lot of heat over this possibility because many residents feel that this is what he would like since his reputation had been pro-business and tourism.

Nagin apologizes for MLK Day comments

11:30 AM CST on Tuesday, January 17, 2006
WWLTV.com

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin apologized Tuesday for some of the comments that he made during a Martin Luther King Day Rally in the city Monday.

Nagin said that his intention was to comfort African-American residents, especially those feeling unwanted during the rebuilding process, but he said in doing so he inadvertently offended others.

“I apologize to any resident in this city that may have been offended,” he said. “That was not my intention. If I could take anything back, I thought the Uptown comment was inappropriate. If any people are working hard to rebuild this city, it’s the people Uptown.”

In his speech, Nagin had said that despite what some Uptown might be saying, that New Orleans would again be a majority African-American city.

Nagin also apologized for invoking God in his speech, saying that it was inappropriate.

Nagin’s speech included a statement that God wanted New Orleans to be majority African-American.

“Unfortunately, everything I say today is scrutinized to the nth degree,” he said. “It was Martin Luther King’s birthday. I thought it was appropriate to address some of the concerns and frustrations I’m hearing from the African-American community.”

Depending on who gets back into the New Orleans for the vote its very possible that someone even more outspoken on racial issues will be elected. The reason why Nagin has made statements like that is previously many of the poorer African-American residents felt Nagin wasn't doing enough to address their issues.

I'm not saying its right I'm explaining why he would make a statement like that and for those who think that the voters of NO should kick him out for making racist statements should understand that many voters in NO want their mayor to make statements like that.

My own read on Nagin is that he himself probably doesn't believe what he's saying but is saying stuff like that considering how much heat has gotten in the past and also in light of the most recent NOLA recovery plan that has been heavily criticized by residents and others for possibly doing away with many of the African American neighborhoods. His statement about NO being a "Chocalate City" IMO is a direct response to critics accusing him of possibly whitewashing the city with a plan that could gut mostly African American neighborhoods.

I dont understand where he gets away with just an apology. If a white mayor would say something to the affect of. God wants this city to be a white city, its his will blah blah blah. He would be kicked out of office, and be labeled a racist until he dies. What bothers me the most is the double standard that is there. Black people can talk talk talk, then when it comes to white people if they call someone black they are a racist. I feel this double standard not only stirs the racism of the true racist, but embraces all sterotypes and seperation we have today.

I feel this double standard not only stirs the racism of the true racist, but embraces all sterotypes and seperation we have today.

because race and racial attitudes aren't formed in a vacuum. the context of race relations in america reflect america's historic tradition. when a white guy says anti-black stuff he's inherently put in the context of 200 years of slavery followed by 100 years of de jure discrimination. and most white folks who'd make such statements know this history and probably use it to make their anti-black comments. obviously that would be treated worse than a black guy saying we want this city to remain black.

This was a comment by an educated black man who knew the statements were going to appeal to blacks. He did it because he was trying to save his own neck, its disgusting, cowardly, and racist.

Hmm, Nagin was afraid that the CIA was after him. Jim Jones used to think the CIA was after him too. Note to self, don't drink any punch offered by Nagin.

Nagin is one of the most unprofessional and incompetent elected leaders i've ever seen. If the people of NO and LA have any sense, they will vote out both him and governor Blanco at their earliest opportunity. Of course, they voted those imbeciles into office in the first place so I doubt that will happen.

I'm a little late, but this is almost laughable...However, its par for the course...
