If Bagwell does the same, it would help the Astros out alot.

Why? Would you restructure your contract? I sure as hell wouldn't. Sucks for us, but he's entitled to every last penny of that contract.

Uh, restructuring doesn't mean he loses money, it just means the way it is payed out is changed. IE, deferred payments.

Yep... exactly. And that has already been done on numerous occasions.

Uh, the contract terms are that he gets that entire $17 million next year, not in deferred payments. He shouldn't be expected to make that sacrifice.

Yes, after all he has a family to feed.

i know he's done it at least twice already in his career. i wouldn't ask for that. i love jeff bagwell and everything he has done for this organization. give him his money that he has earned in his great career. it's got to be up to mclane to open his frugal pockets. he has the money, and i just ONCE want to see him invest more money into a team that isn't that far from winning a world series, i hope that he gets that winning a championship is SOOOO worth the money.

Wouldn't it suck if Chipper reconstructs it and Furcal leaves anyways.

this year IS a restructure year, if i remember right, for bagwell. meaning...that $17 mil includes some deferred compensation from previous years.

they'll usually restruc once they know they have a deal in place with furcal. basically simultaneously.. and if it falls through, then chipper doesn't restruc

I don't see what's the point. The Astros are unlikely to hand out a big contract this offseason anyway. They might as well eat Bagwell's remaining contract this year, so they'll have money pursue FA next year. If they can get Pettite to sign a backloaded contract next offseason, they should have a ton of money to spend on FA. If players like Taveras and Burke can continue to develop next year, then a big FA offseason for 06-07 could make us a contender for several years.
