i really wish clemens had enough rest earlier in order to be able to pitch in game 2 at busch stadium. with his road ERA this year, i would much rather him pitch on the road and have roy shut the cards down at MMP. but i guess it's all in the past now, and it really doesnt matter too much. astros still win saturday.

HOUSTON -- Astros manager Phil Garner wouldn't tip his hand as to whether playoff star Chris Burke will be in the lineup on Saturday for Game 3 of the National League Championship Series at Minute Maid Park.
But when asked who would get a bigger hand during pregame introductions, Burke or Saturday's starter Roger Clemens, Garner dropped quite a hint.
"I don't know about that," Garner said. "But I do know who's going to get booed if [Burke's] not playing tomorrow."
Possible hint at starting Burke?

Burke has become a legend in less then 10 ab. This is madness. but hey, if he believes it then it might be a self fulfilling prophecy. I always thought Brett Farve made the same kind of leap. Suddenly he just thought he was good. Then he was. It's all in the head.
RocketManJosh
10-15-2005, 02:40 PM
I'm less worried about Burke in center than I am Lance in LF on a bum knee. With that combination we have to hope for not too many gappers between left and center. Chris won't be able to speed over and save Lance like Willy did against Atlanta. Offensively, it looks a lot better to me however.

You guys and ESPN.com were my only ways to follow the game today... thanks everyone!
Out of curiousity: how dirty WAS Lane's slide? Sounds like it coulda gone either way, maybe? If people aren't sure, then I'm not going to waste any time thinking about it... just don't like the thought that he mighta given the Cards any extra motivation.

What a great game. I'm glad that Lane who had struggled hit that go ahead RBI. Everett also had that tremendous play to end the 8th.
Good job Astros!

It looked just like a slide made to break up a double play at second base.
If I was a Card fan, I'd be a little miffed, but the guy isn't hurt bad.

Lamb might be the player of the game cuz of the homer and double, but don't discount Everett's diving catch, Burke playing a pretty nice center field, and QUALLS! being the "BTL." (Bridge To Lidge). Getting Pujols, Edmonds, and Walker (with help from AE) like that and retiring 6 in a row allowed Lidge to avoid the middle of that lineup in the 9th!

Carpenter vs. Pettitte - Cardinals edge
Oswalt vs. Mulder - Astros Edge
Clemens vs. Morris - Astros Edge
This is gonna be a close one. But if we can get 1 of next 2 I like our chances in St. Louis.

Carpenter is the best pitcher in baseball right now. Oswalt and Mulder both pitched great games...and let's face it, clemens isn't exactly on his A game right now.

That slide was clean. Nunez was in the base path, and Lane was trying to block the throw but it was clean. Just a hard baseball play.

Take off the red and white glasses. "Pujols" may win the Cy Young, but he was not this year's best pitcher. Carpenter only has wins, K's, and Pujols over Pettitte and Clemens (1 and 2 in ERA), but Willis has Carpenter beat in ERA and wins. Willis is the guy I would vote for Cy Young.
If wins and K's is all you look for in a pitcher as your statement "Carpenter is the best pitcher.." would suggest, Oswalt is to Mulder as Carpenter is to Pettitte. Despite this, one is a clear edge while the other is only a slight edge.
The Cardinals "had" and may have a better hitting team after the injuries. The Astros have a better pitching team and still haven't used their best "anti-Cardinal" pitcher this series.

Try Astros edge.
Take a look at season stats. Post All-Star break stats. Whatever your preference. Unless you're going to quote something completely irrelevant like W/L record, Pettitte is better. The point of a game for a pitcher is to prevent runs, and Pettitte does this at a better rate than Carpenter.

Burke was definitely out. I am glad that the very next Astros batter got out and ended the inning. There was no Astros benefit from getting that call, and the integrity of the Astros victory is intact.

I thought Morris was getting a much bigger strike zone tonight than Clemens. And when is someone gonna peg Pujols for that stupid freakin smirk he bats with? Nolan woulda pegged his ass for his homerun trot the other night and then invited him to the mound if he wanted to talk about it. Why doesn't Clemens peg people anymore? Seems like he stopped doing it when he got to Houston.

I thought Morris was getting a much bigger strike zone tonight than Clemens. I had the exact same thought. Actually I thought Qualls and Lidge also threw a number of pitches in the zone and didn't get the calls. I only saw one time that the cards threw a strike and had it called a ball, but I will admit that my bias might have played a role, so I am glad to hear someone else had the same thoughts.

Me too Franchise. I don't want controversy in any of our wins.
Wonder if LaRussa's pregame comments about worrying whether the ump would give Clemens a generous strike zone played into him getting a different zone than Morris received.

Probably has to do with the fact he's taking at bats now.

Clemens doesn't bean people like Ryan beaned people - he pitches inside a lot and if people get hit - they get hit. He doesn't try to enforce a code of conduct like Ryan did.

Watching Clemens in Boston and Toronto I don't think that's true. The first time he faced Mo Vaughn, one of his best friends on the Red Sox, after going to Toronto he plunked him just to send a message. I think it either has something to do with the Piazza beaning or the Astros nice guys image. I don't think it has ANYTHING to do with him having to bat. It really seems like he stopped throwing high and inside after the whole Piazza thing. Still, I would have loved to see Pujols with his smirk and easy HR trot get what was coming his way with Ryan.

A ball here or there I'm usually pretty good about blowing off as other than 'getting a different zone' than the opposition. I thought it was pretty consistent tonight.

Roger said his hammy was not a factor, but he did stretch it once or twice after throwing a pitch. Roger was cruising until Pujols hit a 400' shot that Burke caught near the porch out in left-center. After that Rocket struggled, so I don't know if he was rattled or it was a coincidence or he ran out if gas. He seemed to lose a little command after that, but he was still throwing hard. He battled through the trouble and kept Houston in the game. The Cards did tie it up a 2-2, but the Stros scored a run then added another so Roger did get the win.

I think he means THE (World) Series. However Chicago, if they are able to close out the Angels and it looks like they will, will be tough. They have starting pitching as good as Houston, so it would be a great series. But we have to take care of bidness with St. Louis first.
