I know it's extremely early, but looking at the rest of the Texans schedule in the "When will the Texans win their first game" thread, it seems possible the Texans might not win more than 3 games, if that.
Oct 16 @Seattle - L
Oct 23 Indianapolis - L
Oct 30 Cleveland - W
Nov 6 @Jacksonville - L
Nov 13 @Indianapolis - L
Nov 20 Kansas City - L
Nov 27 St. Louis - L
Dec 4 @Baltimore - L
Dec 11 @Tennessee - L
Dec 18 Arizona - W
Dec 24 Jacksonville - L
Jan 1 @San Francisco - W
Just my pessimistic opinion on the rest of the season..
So.. who can the Texans justify as their first overall pick in 2006?
If we end up with the #1 overall pick.. dare we take Leinart? And for that matter.. can we even LOOK at another QB, period? Maybe Leinart could be to Carr what Phillip Rivers was to Drew Brees? Can we trade the pick for a smattering of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounders to address depth problems at positions like OL, DL (We probably won't be running a 3-4 defense next year..), SS, and WR?

It'll be (or should be) D'Brickashaw Ferguson, at least if Casserly wants to keep his job - I'm sure Capers will be fired by then.

We're not going to beat Cleveland.
If we draft anything other than OL, we're idiots. You get the first pick, trade down a few spots like San Diego did a couple years ago. Take the best OL available, trade one of the extra 2nd or 3rd round picks for a QB like Grossman or someone similar who may be in a battle for a starter's job (Rivers, maybe?) and go from there.
I'm not convinced either way on Carr, but he's due such a huge bonus next year that I could see him not being our QB in 2006.

If I was Leinart I would pull an Eli Manning and tell the Texans not to draft me or else I'll sit out a year. No way would I want to QB behind the Texans o-line untill they fix it.

There is a very good chance (and what I'm hoping is a distinct reality) that Casserly will be gone as well. The moves to make are to "try" to get something of value for Carr, draft Leinart and sit him for a year while free agent quarterback Jon Kitna takes the lumps.

How hilarious.. bring in Kitna to prep ANOTHER heisman trophy winning USC quarterback..

Give me Vince Young and you are automatically a .500 team with this squad. He may not be the greatest passer that will put up gaudy passing #'s, but he will be every bit as good as Vick is with his arm, and Vick just flat out wins.

Kitna has shown to be a solid mentor. The irony behind it stinks for Kitna, but that's reality and he knows his role in the NFL.

Carr has been in the top 3 of rushing for QB's for the past 2 years.. He's not exactly slow and he can throw on the run too, mostly because he is forced to..
Saying that VY could make this team .500 automatically is just beyond silly.. I doubt ANY QB in the NCAA right now could help this team in it's present state.

I knew this thread would be a magnet for UT fanboys to come harp on VY, but let's keep the homerism to a minimum, please :D

I'm a huge UT fan and even I understand how ridiculous that comment was.

Who knows, maybe Young could actually catch a pass once in a while (unlike Bradford or Gaffney) and help capitalize on Andre's double teams.. Either way, lawd we needs us some help!

Unless Vince Young and Matt Leinart can play left tackle for themselves, I don't see what the point would be in drafting a top QB.

Yeah our OLINE is bad but DAVID CARR isnt it too. Why try fixing the OLINE when Carr can't take you to the next level and I dont think he's worth the $8million bonus for 2006.
I say we draft Leinart , trade David Carr (to Jets,Miami) for an OL or trade picks to draft OL.
Basically get rid of Carr for Leinart and draft & sign OL.

It's not just silly, it's ignorant.
VY is the next Vick, okay ... even if that was true, Vick himself couldn't get this team to a "guaranteed" 8 wins.

Not only would I use our 1st pick on an OL, I would use our 2nd too just to be sure. Then I go defense the rest of the draft. Taking care of the OL will fix all the problems on offense, but the defense need help all over.

That's the trouble right there, David Carr and his extention. It's just adds to the uncertainty surrounding the Texans. McNair is on the horns of a dilemma. Will he replace Capers, AND Casserly, and allow the Texans to draft another QB #1? I guess the QB part is not too much of an issue monetarily given that he's either going to pay Carr or possibly Leinart. Personally I would be against taking Leinart if he is simply brought in with the same personel that Carr had on offense. We did not build an offensive line the first time around and we better get it right with version 2.0 of the Texans.

I've got a question. Those of you saying to draft another quarterback high and fix the offensive line through later rounds and free agency... what do you think we've been doing the last four years? Pitts and Wand were second and third round choices. Wiegert and Wade were free agent signings. It's not working. Elite talents are usually gone by the secondary rounds. Elite players (Orlando Pace) in free agency usually want to sign with teams that have proven they can win.
We've been trying to build the offensive line that way for years. It hasn't worked, and there's no reason to believe it will. The only sure-fire way to improve is by grabbing an elite talent at tackle high in the draft, and we'd be fools to pass up the opportunity if and when it presents itself.

With the first pick in the draft the Texans pick....a new coaching staff.

To atone for a Massive Draft Day Brain Fart in 05, the Texans will be required to draft offensive lineman until further notice.

Assuming we get a top 5 pick, I think we should go with OL and get Ferguson.
Assuming we get the #1 Pick, I think we should trade down for a top 5 pick and additional picks.
BTW, I doubt VY will come out this year. IF he stays at UT for his senior year, it will be his best shot at a National Championship (w/ Leinart and Bush gone) and it could also boost him up to being the #1 QB in the nation.
You improve your OL as much as possible, if Carr still can't produce, you'll still most likely have a high pick, and then you get VY. ;)

If Reggie Bush is there you take him..if not you go OL then WR. This draft talk kinda makes me hope the Texans keep loosing.

Becuase it's not sexy to draft OL that high in the draft. Yet no one complains 5 years down the road when you have an anchor at the LT spot protecting your qb's blind spot giving him that additional second or two to drop a 40 yard pass on the oponent.

Not sure where Bush would fit into our scheme. He's having a superb year rushing and receiving, but he also has the Heisman winner throwing to him and one of the best offensive lines in college blocking for him. He's has it kinda easy over there at USC, putting him in the NFL with the worst offense in the league will expose anyone.
IF he is available, then maybe we could take him and then trade him for a high 1st rounder and a mid-1st rounder, the same could be done with Leinart.
I'm just not sold on picking up a skill player, especially on offense, if the OL can't give Carr enough time in the pocket, then nothing happens on offense, nothing.

Firing Casserly and then drafting a position player with the 1st round pick is retarded. I'm with Furious Jam. Draft an OL with the 1st rounder, then draft another one with the 2nd rounder just for good measure. Heck, I wouldn't mind if the Texans spent a 3rd rounder on an OL as well. It's just that important, people.

yup. Casserly realized this, that's why he started with Boselli, Young, McKinney. Then that plan exploded, and he hasn't gotten around to fixing it 4 years later.
"Not a good draft for OL's" "It's too high to draft him, he's a second rounder at best" "Seth Wand is a sleeper and will develop!" "New blocking scheme"
Pathetic.

If we don't take an O-Lineman with our #1 we might as well draft a running back to play QB. Because that's all he'll be doing. If the Texans can't learn from history, then their doomed to keep repeating it. And no QB will want to come to our team and jeopardize his career. It's not that attractive when a team is on their way to breaking their own sack record. :(
