It's all my fault. I forgot to wash my lucky underwear in time for a critical game and rather than just tough it out for the team, I put on a clean but uncharmed pair. The rest is history... :(

If we can split these first 2 or win em....loots like at worst a 9-4 homestand.

Yea... Wilkerson hit that fastball like he knew it was coming. I think Zeke should exclusively go to that split any time he has a 2 strike count... until the league catches on.

I don't know if he's tired or just going thru a slump, but Biggio has been really struggling at the plate. 0-5 with 6 LOB tonight and 6-41 (.146) over hist past 11 games. With as many young players as we have, we can't afford to have one our veterans go thru an extended period of little-to-no production.

Don't tell that to the people who have been begging for Lane and Burke to sit on the bench.

Personally, I agree with you... not just because I think Lane has been a much better hitter than his batting average has shown (he is still suffering from that awful awful May), but I just like having Lamb's potential stick on the bench for late-game situations (or Palmeiro's for that matter).

At least we have our big guns coming up in the bottom of the 9th... time to pull out some more magic.

I was just going to post something similiar. Biggio is known for having horrible August's, although last year he was great down the stretch. Overall, I'd try to give him more rest on road games, and let him swing away at home. All of his #'s are much much better at MMP... tonight's game not withstanding.

If I were Garner, I would move biggio down to 6th in the order and have Palemerio in the 2 hole. Palmerio is a better on base guy and makes solid contact while Biggio is going through his annual slump. I also think Burke would prosper in the 2 hole b/c pitchers are probably consentrating more on Burke when he has Ausmus and the pitcher behind him; he could have success between taveras and berkman.

I say give Biggio a break and start Burke at second. That way you can play Palmero in left and Lane in right and put Berkman back at 1st. Give Biggio a chance at home because he plays better in MMP, but on the road I think Burke's speed and bat are wasted sitting on the bench.

Yea... I was just questioning the timing (probably would have been better off posting this last night).

Garner said before the all-star break that both these guys would be seeing more starts, especially since Lance's knee was well-enough to play in the OF.

For now, it seems like Burke/Lane get starts against all lefties and marginal right-handers (like Ryan Drese tommorow)... but Lamb/Palmeiro get the starts agains the quality right-handers. They actually have probably been about the same (wins-wise) when either tandem plays... and I don't recall a situation where not having a lefty-stick to pinch-hit has really cost them (although you're right... it would be nice to have those guys rather than Lane/Burke to pinch hit).

You would think Lane would start tonight after the 0-5 Lamb put up yesterday not to mention the 2 double plays he hit into. He did get a nice bloop hit to keep the rally going. :)

You're right about the young guys playing more often during the run, but when ever Garner thinks a game really counts he yanks Lane and Burke in favor of the vetrans. I'm sure the fact that both Lamb and Palmiero can hit from the left side has something to do with starting them tonight.

Before the last road trip, we won nearly every game (minus the St. Louis sweep), and Lamb/Palmeiro played just as much as Lane/Burke. To say that Lane/Burke played the majority throughout our "big run" isn't exactly accurate.

I think Lane doesn't deserve to be benched as much, and Palmeiro deserves to start more... but for some reason, Garner refuses to break up the pairs (as if they're some set tandem duo).

This was probably the worst possible type of inning for Wandy after his team put up a decent lead for him.

We were winning in spite of Burke, not because of him. He's terrible. I agree on keeping Lane in the lineup ahead of Lamb, but Palmeiro should see the majority of starts over Burke. The numbers aren't even close.

My question is why Lamb and Palmeiro have to play together. Garner never starts one without the other. While having a lefty stick is an advantage, Lane's having a very solid season and has been hot recently. I'd like to get him as much playing time now as we could to ride that streak. My ideal lineup would be Berkman at first, Lane in right and Palmeiro in left... but Garner has never tried that combination.

I'm too lazy to ever bring specific numbers into any argument, but I disagree. Burke, at first, was hurting us with his bat. But lately he's turned it around and has been having great AB's. Add that to the fact that he's becoming more than an average OF'er (defensively), I think he deserves more of a shot than Lamb.

I like your ideal lineup. You could put Palmeiro behind Morgan in the lineup followed by Lane to make sure they pitch to Morgan. Plus you would still have a lefty to PH in Lamb if you need him. Why Garner never tries this lineup is beyond me.

While having a lefty stick is an advantage, Lane's having a very solid season and has been hot recently. I'd like to get him as much playing time now as we could to ride that streak. My ideal lineup would be Berkman at first, Lane in right and Palmeiro in left... but Garner has never tried that combination.

Hmm... is there an echo in here?... or did you just subtly steal my thunder! :D

I think Lane doesn't deserve to be benched as much, and Palmeiro deserves to start more... but for some reason, Garner refuses to break up the pairs (as if they're some set tandem duo).

Phil needs to have a quick hook with Wandy tonight.....his location is way off and his body language says he's just frustrated (another great thing about the big three is that they never appear flustered). To give back the lead after losing last night and having a big 1st inning could be very discouraging.

At least Biggio seems to be coming out of his mini-slump.....we've got to have him hitting before the big 2 in our lineup come up.

haha, sorry about that Nick. I saw the Burke post and replied before I took a glance at the rest of the page. :)

Burke hit .238 in April, .244 in June, .244 in July and .188 in August. He's actually been one of the most consistent players on our team; sadly, it's just been consistently bad. He's had a few good series against the weak pitching rotations of the Rockies, Pirates and Giants of the world, but he's been consistently overmatched against solid major league pitching.

That said, I'll agree that Lamb hasn't been much better. But he does have a little more power, and he does have the advantage of being a lefty. imo, using Lamb against the righties and Burke against lefties is a good call... but neither should see that much playing time overall. Lane and Palmeiro should both be starting a little more than they are.

the way livan seems to be able to hit that spot 7 inches off the corner over and over again makes it weird that he isn't better. i mean, once the ump lets him cheat, he never misses, or he just barely does. biggio should have had 3-1 instead of 2-2.

Well, my only explanation is Ensberg hadn't exactly done much tonight either... and had looked just as silly on one of his K's. Also, while Berkman hadn't done much tonight, he does have pretty good lifetime #'s against Hernandez... and he is a lefty.

In the end, it cost them... but I can somewhat see the reasoning behind it.

I think Palmero has proven over his career that he is a role player and not suited for everyday play. I agree this guy has been nothing short of great for the stros on offense and as a defensive replacement as well. Anyway, was at the game tonite, we need to get that place going again. Hopefully the bats will get going again and we can get on another roll. sunday's victory against the giants showed me a lot about the heart of this team. They will not give up.

On a completely different note, is it interesting that the Astros get no pub from the media. Could you imagine if one of the new york teams had gone 36-10 a year ago and then went 42-18 over 60 games during the reg season. They would all over the place, on the cover of SI, etc. We dont even get a mention in any of these publications. I question Frank Robinson's late game management but I am not complaining. Bringing in a hurting Guillen who has not seen live pitching in a long while for a warm body like Preston who is likely to get a needed hit there for them beats me.

Even though Preston has struggled, he still had a better chance of hitting Lidge's fastball and slider than Jose. In 5 ABs, Preston has one hit against Lidge and that hit was 2-run homer (only 1 K) while Jose is 0-4 lifetime (before today's game) against Brad (3 strike outs).

Oh well - good for us.

Now take the rubber game.

Huh? They were complete media darlings around the All Star Break. You couldn't read a baseball article in the sports section of any website (SI.com, ESPN.com, MSNBC.com) without someone writing about how the Stros were the team to beat for the Wild Card -- and this was when we were behind the Gnats.

I think the actual question is why isn't he playing everyday against right handers (which would be 75-80% of the time). It was reasonable to keep Burke in the lineup and give him his at bats where he didn't have to worry about being "benched". Now that it's crunch time, you've got to go with the guys that are consistently getting it done.

Orlando Palmero should be in the lineup everytime a right-handed pitcher is going. For the year he's hitting

.397 AVG .429 OBP .552 SLG

Jason Lane after the all-star break is

I have no idea if they’re mentioned as often as the A’s because I don’t really pay attention to A’s coverage. (However, I'd venture to guess that they're getting more than half the coverage.)

Your first post said the Stros get “no pub from the media.” That’s definitely been true in the past, but myself and other posters pointed out it’s far from true this year (coverage about our turnaround, stories about the Ensberg All-Star snub, daily articles about Clemens’ season, etc.).

So now you’re asking if the Stros are mentioned as much as the A’s. I don’t know, but that wasn’t your first point and it has nothing to do with whether or not the Stros are getting national press.

(As to your new point, I think the amount of press the Stros are getting is where it should be. Personally, I'd rather we sneak up on people in October than have a bulls-eye on our heads after being over-hyped all summer.)

Phil Garner also brought some more optimism to the table to look forward to in September.

He said that when Backe comes back (not if), this long break should actually benefit him especially since he's a guy who's never pitched as a starter for an entire season... thus, there's a good chance that if he hadn't gotten injured, his arm would have been in pretty bad shape come September/post-season.

If Backe can come anywhere close to how he performed in last year's playoffs... that gives us a 1-4 that is BETTER than any other playoff contender out there. Sure, you still need timely hitting... but its nice to not have to worry about having to throw guys out there on 3 days rest, or having Pete Munro try to win a game that could send you to the World Series.

We need a new 3rd base coach. Berkman wasn't even close.

It looked like Berkman thought about running into the catcher hard, and then at the last minute was like fu.ck it.

Why the hell did the 3rd base coach send him. Guillen has the 3rd best arm in baseball behind Ichrio and Vlad.

I'm not sure about having Bruntlett hitting 6th in the lineup. I really wish we had one more good quality bat to add to this lineup. I like Bruntlett, but Ausmus and Burke are better hitters than him.

Yep... he probably bought himself the type of immunity that Greg Zaun had for all of 2002, after he hit that walkoff grand slam against Arizona.

As long as Bruntlett can continue to deliver in pinch-hits, and play solid defense (which he does... wherever Garner puts him), he's just fine with me.

Every team could use a guy like him.

Ausmus is not a better hitter than Bruntlett.

Given Berkman's knee, I'm glad he did. With a 1-0 lead early in the game, and Pettitte pitching, we don't need Berkman to ruin our season by blowing out his knee.

Looking good so far.

I would've used a stronger adjective than solid, I think he's exceptional defensively. I think he had something like four hits in July - one was the walkoff homer against the Natty Lites, one was a triple that broke open a game against Pitt, and another was a homer against the Mets in that game we lost.

He's the Heir Apparent to Bill Spiers - who is something of a minor deity.

Great comparison... I loved Billy Spiers, and ever since he had to retire because of his back problems we've needed another player like him. The good news is I think Bruntlett is even more talented to Spiers.

Exactly what I was thinking...I was feeling the 5-4-3 inning ender.

Pettitte's at 78 pitches through 6 innings, I'm guessing they'll get one more out of him and give him an early night

But, Ausmus already converted on the other bases loaded situation in the inning.

To ask for conversions in every single bases loaded situation you have is just tempting the baseball gods... especially since they gave us the gift with Ensberg beating the rundown.

the thing that was so nice about spiers is he hit about .270-.280 and it seemed like, even when he got out, he always made nice contact. you didn't see him go down swinging at sliders in the dirt or anything and he didn't really hit homers, he just made nice contact. and played a ton of positions. he was indeed a minor deity.

edit: i shortchanged him. he hit .288 in his 5 main seasons with us.

The main difference is that, when healthy, Bill Spiers was a legitimate #2 hitter in a good batting order for the Astros. Bruntlett may be developing a little bit of a legend status this season, but he is far from the hitter Bill Spiers was.

The Nats are damn pesky... I'm glad we're done with them. Even though we won 5 of the 7 games, there was only one game that was truly a blowout (the 14-1 game).

The Marlins also lost tonight... that leaves the Phillies as the only team within 2 games of us. I still hold strong that the NL East teams are all gonna beat up on each other, and whoever is the "best" of that bunch will be our main competition (thus, we should really just root for the Braves... if they end up being the best team in the NL East head-to-head competition down the stretch, there really is no competition for the wild card.)

if the guy in the on deck circle represents the tying run when you come in, you can get a save and that's what happened here.

All due respect but please give Bruntlett 4 more years of stellar play, giving it all for the team, being the epitome of team player before comparing him to The Great Bill Spiers.

Yes, if the Braves are playing the NL East teams, that is well and good, but I'm hoping they lose all the other games, to bring them down to the pack as well, in case a team like Philly goes on a tear.

I agree.

Mentioning Spiers and Bruntlet names in the same sentence (as in that context) is both premature and somewhat disrecpectful to Billy.

Let Brunt do his thing for more that 2 seasons then we can talk. He has to hit well and consistently through a full season as well.

Well, I know the first inclination is to expect a sweep over the Pirates. But their kid who's throwing tonight has been stellar. And Roy O has been average at best over his last 3 starts. Let's hope the dead arm is better.

With the Nats going to Coors/Phills facing Peavy and SD/Marlins facing Lowry(who shut us down), we have a chance to gain so more ground with a W.

Actually, when saves first became an official stat in 1969, all a reliever had to do was finish a game to get a save, regardless of the score or situation. It is the modifier of the "save" stat that would laugh at him. :)
